Good episode! It’d be interesting to hear a follow up to this episode as you probably have had some time to review options and your inventory items. One option I’ll mention is that Heritage does offer comprehensive cataloging and grading services. When I decided to finally let go of the large collection of comics assembled over the years (with a couple of full run of favourites), I shipped the entirety of it to the auction house. They have an incredible staff, and the team catalogued and picked out issues that were worthy of the expense to grade and slab, handled all the back and forth, and then included items over different auctions.

Ryan and I are in the exact same boat collecting-wise. I gave myself 12 months to downsize/upgrade my collection last November after watching a grail of mine slip away because I had too much money tied up into smaller items that I couldn't sell fast enough. I have sold off 18 years worth of collecting over the last 10 months, roughly 80% of my collection, and reinvested that money into fewer higher quality items. I, too, own only 1-5 items per show I enjoy and make sure they hit hard. I agree with Ryan that people put importance on things they own because they own them, yet if they had to bid to own it today they would pass. They cling to their past interest and do not realize just how few of people actually want some of the items they think are highly coveted. Quantity wise I probably went from 600 items to 50. I now own things I didn't think was possible for me to own. I've spent money I didn't think was possible for me to spend. I now have less stress with quantity for myself and my family, no storage in the closets, easy outs for money if needed, less COAs, and simply more enjoyment in what I am looking at. My collection is a lot less niche. People want what I have. I don't have to explain the scene something was used in, pictures are a choice. I was worried about downsizing down the road due to the quantity of items, the interests in them 20-30 years from now, what would I do if I needed money fast for my family, etc.. This is no longer something I worry about. The biggest fear for most is not knowing if they will win something after selling items....and I can assure you there are SO many nice things out there that you will certainly upgrade with a handful of goals and patience. I do not have a single regret on anything I've sold. If you have been smart on what you've put your money into, the wins will outweigh the losses. The biggest struggle I've had to-date is continuing to want big ticket items outside of my normal budget and wanting to sell more to get them only to realize I do not have much left to sell. I have hit the wall of 3-5 pieces a year as my budget allows it. While fewer boxes are coming to my home, the items are much higher quality. It is hard to downsize fast and then shut the lifestyle off. I collect privately and quietly and am proud of myself for what I've accomplished. Sorry this was long winded, I enjoyed the podcast regarding something relatable to myself.

Hey guys, love the show! I mainly listen to the podcast, but I had to come here and defend the honor of the late great Roger Slifer and Kieth Giffen who created Lobo. So…in my best smarmiest Comic Book Guy voice: you know Lobo’s first appearance was in the limited series Omega Men where he first appeared in issue #3. Simon Bisley gave the character his signature look going forward so you MIGHT be forgiven for that mistake IF one of you wasn’t a massive collector of comic art. Keep up the good work. I’ll see myself out.

Fun episode, great guest, a PSA for dealing with ticks and call out for Time Bandits! ;) On the Time Bandits map, I’ve heard along the way that there are two copies: one owned by Terry Gilliam and the other given to George Harrison. It’s an exquisite piece of artwork and one of the things that makes the film one of my favourites as well.

100% correct on the new auction breed of high end bidder (speculator). Was talking about the biker scout with our mutual friend the other day, and pretty sure I know who that other bidder was, and as you say, they don't really care, it's just a new high end trophy toy to spend money on as the cash is doing nothing in the bank. Not to say they don't enjoy it, but they don't have the passion or the history in the hobby. I always have to ask, if you're so interested, and so invested, and spend so much money... how come you weren't around 30 years ago doing this with us ?? (and yes, they are our age...) It's bored wealthy people deciding on a hobby to fill up time, not having a hobby because of sheer interest and passion. As per the quote, 'Your hobby finds you, you don't find your hobby...'

And of course congrats to Dave, too! Hadn't gotten to the part where he revealed he'd won the Biker Scout helmet. What a coup! As to the buyer's premium, back in the day (before it went private in 2019), Sotheby's charged 25% up to $300k, 20% for everything after that up to $3 million, and 12.9% for everything over $3 million. Now it's 26% for the first $1 million, 20% for the rest up to $4.5 million, and 14% for everything after that. In 2018, they had like a 10% profit margin, so ... yeah, I think inflation and other issues are certainly there to explain higher prices, _but_ they should probably be making tiers rather than a flat percentage, with tiers based on their experience of whatever makes reasonable sense.

Congrats on the Biker Scout helmet Dave, and awesome news on the Batwing Ryan! While I'm not quite in your league, I picked up three lots of original Close Encounters storyboards from the Doug Trumbull collection, which I was very happy about (especially as I 'won' them largely at the reserves). One thing's for sure, they'll be a damn sight easier to display than the Batwing.

I picked up five original Mentor Huebner storyboards from David Lynch's Dune that I was very happy with, especially as I got them for the starting price. I have to say importing them into the UK was a nightmare thanks to Fed Ex's utter incompetence. They sat in customs for a week, and Fed EX had the temerity to blame Heritage, who did everything correctly and provided all the necessary information. Oh well, all's well that ends well.
