Shawneetown, performed by The 1937 Flood

"Shawneetown" is a 1970s composition by folk artist Dillon Bustin, based on fragments of a 1820s tune he found published in Leland D. Baldwin’s 1941 book, "The Keelboat Age on Western Waters." The Flood enjoyed this tune at a recent rehearsal.

Singing Out to Doug Chaffin at the 2024 Fraley Festival

In Olive Hill, Ky., this weekend is the first Fraley Festival since the death last fall of Doug Chaffin. At last night's festival gathering, Doug's old band mates in The 1937 Flood performed this tribute to him from the old stage of the amphitheater. The guys were pleased that legendary fiddler Barb Kuhns joined them for their set.

A standing joke in The 1937 Flood's world is that the band makes The Big Bucks from grant money scored by the Flood Education Department, mainly when we tell stories and history of the songs during our shows. That’s a lie, of course. There are not even little bucks in such blather, but we still like to rattle on about what we’ve found in our song research. Last night’s show at Woodlands, for in...
Songs of Sun and Rain from The 1937 Flood

Here are a couple of tunes that the band's manager/videographer, Pamela Bowen, shot at this week's rehearsal. We didn't realize we were doing a sunny/rainy theme until we thought about it later. :)
Peaceful Easy Feeling, at home with The Flood

We’ve loved this song ever since the late Roger Samples taught it to us back in the early 1970s when he helped us the start The Flood. But it being a new century and all, we wanted to give the song a new sound, so the guys let Charlie’s banjo happily trot alongside Jack’s drum and Randy’s bass, ready to frame the vocal harmonies and those sweet solos by Danny and Sam

Two More from The Flood at Home

At last week’s rehearsal, Pamela Bowen videoed a couple of very different tunes from the night. First on her video is our take on the jazz standard “But Not for Me.” Then we make a 180-degree pivot to something a bit more down home, with Randy taking over the vocals and Charlie switching to banjo for "Ready for the Times to Get Better."
An Ed Light Special with The 1937 Flood

When our friend Ed Light dropped in from the Baltimore area to sit in with The Flood for the very first time, he did something no one else has ever done for us: He wrote us a song! And we were so…. uh, well, you know, “honored” is not exactly the word we’re probably looking for here. But, considering the text that Brother Ed chose for his sermon, we were certainly dumbstruck by his discernment ...

Love it guys. Dillon Bustin came up with some fine songs. Would love to sit in with you sometime but I'm across the Pond in the UK. My Old Time band is Rattle On the Stovepipe, if you fancy checking us out on RUclips to hear what the Brits are doing with Old Time music. Wishing you all that's best. Dave Arthur (Rattle On the Stovepipe)
Dave -- thanks for the kind words! And some of us stateside are very grateful to our Brit brothers for keeping the old-time flame alive when so many of our countrymen forgot the clasics. And we'll never forget that in 1966 it was through the efforts of subscribers to a British country music magazine that a tombstone featuring a banjo was placed on Charlie Poole's grave in North Carolina.
Hey great job! My favorite John Stewart song.
So glad you enjoyed it. We've loved that song for decades!

Thanks for memories of an old friend that's passed on
It's a shame Lisa was cursed with the health issues she had. She was an underrated talent and her performance in this film was profound.
that was great...and great to see joe, chuck and dave going at it...
So glad to hear this song with a fiddle part, I have listened to it over and over so I can learn it!!
Ah, yes, the late Joe Dobbs helped us form our band 50 years ago and played with us for four decades. We were blessed, indeed.
This movie was shot right in my hometown in 2 places seligman mo and Garfield arkansas
Nostalgic. Greetings from Mexico. Thanks for sharing 😊
Thank you for the kind note!
Love it
super duper stuff....
Heard this as a little boy growing up in the Ozarks,
❤❤❤😮😮😮
This is awesome 👏
So glad you enjoyed it, John!
Loved it
great stluff
many many thanks for sharing this !!!
Happy New Year 🎈🎊🎆
She should've recorded this on an album.
I own a Stewart McDonald mandolin that I've had since 1983 that has the FRET FIDDLE mark burned on the back of the head. Im a proud owner
1:33 wonderful!
Aw, thank you, luv! Such sweet memories for all of us.
That looks like a Campbell Christmas gathering to me. Marj is in the chair in the background. Jack Campbell is filming with the 16mm camera. Bill Stewart chimes in on the harmonica. Steve Scully takes it all in, and the women are all in the kitchen preparing the food and preparing their family jokes. Jim Lawrence gives his apologies for not attending! and the Burghardts introduce several people we've never seen before. those were the days.
Wonderful. Thank you, Charlie.
It was and is an honor. We're glad you enjoyed it.
Awesome 👏
Beautiful
I really enjoyed making music with you guys!
We really enjoyed it too, buddy. We'll do it again!
Does Zoey still dance?
Yes. She danced in college and graduated from Virginia Radford University with a degree in dance education and communication. She was a dance instructor in Raleigh after graduation.
Thanks to those who produced this video. I grew up less than a mile from Margaret. She was exceptional on guitar and a pretty good friend too. While she was young and learning she and her mother, Bob Jackson and I went down to see the Country Gentleman’s Festival at Stuart Virginia. What a great festival it was. I’m glad I got to spend some time with my neighbors and played with her. She was ahead of her time and her time was too short.
Mr. Scarberry -- thank you so very much for those kind words. Margaret was such a dear heart and a remarkable talent. As noted in the video, for The Flood she was in two widely separated chapters in our lives -- back in the '70s, when she played in a trio with Floodsters Joe Dobbs and Bill Hoke and then again a few years ago when she popped back up for us. What wonderful times we had together. We miss her very much.
Awesome! 👍🏼🎶😎🤠💖🎶
Great rendition. So proud of my little brother!
I've loved this song from the first time I heard it. I think it was a Joan Baez rendition, but it could have been Bob Dylan. I've reached the advanced age of 73 and so exact details escape me! But I still love the song. A great version guys.
hank you, dear friend, for the kind comments. And I’m right there with you on the age and consequential factual fogginess thing. On this tune, I did do a bit of a deep dive for an earlier issue. You might be interested in this: 1937flood.substack.com/p/corrina-corrina I was amazed what an interesting story Corrina had to tell! :)
It was a great show! 👍🏼🎶🥰🤠
Thank you so much for being there! Looking at your smiling faces always makes it better. :)
Excellent performance and video!
So happy that you liked it, Michael. That means a lot.
Hi Dan!
Had an outrageous fun night.. Music couldnt be better...
Yvonne -- it was so wonderful seeing you again. We're delighted that you had a good time partying with The Flood. We'll be back at Sal's on Saturday, April 22. Thanks for the kind words!
It was an awesome night! 🎶❤️🎶
Thanks for bring there, luv. We always play better when we're looking into your smiling face!
Beautiful.....
So mellow. I love the subtle " low harmonies " , Charles . Nice sax . Nice everything. this band is unique .
Love you guys ! You are so tight . I actually remember Bromberg. Indeed I do . { The Holdup }
Aw, thank you so much, Lou! How kind of you to say that. Yes, Bromberg was one of our earliest heroes. In fact, might be interested in this piece we put in our free newsletter earlier this month. Enjoy! 1937flood.substack.com/p/suffer-to-sing-the-blues
@@CEBowen-ej8ri O.K. so I checked out the newsletter piece. Yeah I remember going to the record store when I was around 11 yrs. old. Didn't often have enough money to but anything but we had the " charts " to show which tunes were doing well. Those were the days, as the song says. May I ask you to subscribe to my RUclips channel ? I am one of your new subsribers already. Regards , Lou { are you guys based in Kentucky ? }
@@LouStClair -- Actually, we're based in Huntington, WV -- right on the Kentucky-Ohio-WV border -- but we have long-time Kentucky connection. For instance, my wife, Pamela, and I grew up in Ashland and we lived in Lexington in the '60s while I was finishing up at UK. BTW, Lou, you might have a cousin in our band. Sam St. Clair, our harmonicat, has been playing with The Flood for 20 years now.
Thank you. Ian and Sylvia set a standard back in the 60s. Loved them then, love them now. He will be missed
We've never stopped listening to Ian. We fell in love with Ian & Sylvia all those years ago and we are better people today for having known that wonderful music.
Excellent gentlemen ! I'm 70 and continue to compose and record music. I really believe that musicians in our age bracket { more or less } are still way ahead of the young folks in performing and feeling the music. Cheers , Lou { Tyson was an intriguing man }
We are so happy you liked it, Lou. We're all of the same generation and I'm so grateful to have had Ian Tyson's music in my life's soundtrack! Thanks for the comment.
Awesome job guys,
Good job guys. Ian is our Canadian icon. He is the soul of cowboy lifestyle and a great singer/songwriter. 🇨🇦🇨🇦
We are so happy that you liked the video. For more than a half century, Ian's music has been a big part of our lives too and we were grateful to do our little part in saying farewell to him.
@@CEBowen-ej8ri My favourite Ian Tyson songs are “Summer Wages” and “Eighteen inches of Rain”. Happy New Year to you all.
@@billlafferty8986 Happy New Year to you too, Bill. I love those tunes too. Honestly, tho, for me it’s hard to choose even a DOZEN favorite Ian Tyson songs. I love “Red Velvet,” but then also there's “Navajo Rug” and "The French Girl" and "Play One More." And I always thought he and Sylvia never got enough critical praise for their Great Speckled Bird period, a sound that was very much ahead of its time, I thought. And there were very cool songs on that first GSB album. “Calgary,” “Long Long Time to Get Old,” (not to mention Sylvia’s “Trucker’s Cafe”). So very much good music!
JUST BEAUTIFUL!!! LOVE IT!
Ah, I'm so glad you liked it, JoAnn! And, hey, if you've not already seen it, you might want to check out our newsletter entry about this one. The song has a pretty interesting history: 1937flood.substack.com/p/these-days

Yes, Veezy had a gig that was already scheduled for that night. However, she should be available when we return to Sal's next month.
Awesome guys great job.
A favorite of mine. Thanks!
Thank you Charlie. I LOVE this one for so many reasons. Have wonderful holidays. 🎄🎅💕
Ah, luv -- I think about you and Bob whenever we do this song. :)
Thank you for keeping this music alive!
