James Oswald
Добавлен 11 ноя 2022
I am bestselling crime fiction and fantasy author, James Oswald, but I am also farmer and pedigree Highland cattle breeder James Oswald. I started posting regular videos of the coos (technical term) on Twitter during the first pandemic lockdown, as a way to bring the countryside to my friends stuck in cities and towns. They proved very popular, so here I am three years on still taking short videos and posting them. This channel is mostly a backup, for when Twitter finally dies, but it also allows for longer videos than the two minutes twenty seconds which is all Elon allows unless you pay him extra.
Mmmm... Tasty!
A change in the weather sent the ladies up to the top of the hill this morning. I found them on their way back down again, enjoying the view and a bit of shelter from the wind. There's something fascinating about my plastic overtrousers, obviously. The bolder ones all come up and start licking them if I stand still long enough.
Regular reminder - these cows know me. I have raised them from birth and spend time with them every day. Never approach cattle you don't know and without the permission of the farmer. Best to view from the safe side of the gate.

Wee Morven having a furious sook while she still can, not that mum Catrina seems to mind. Everyone seems to have settled in on the hill after last week's reunion. Here's hoping the weather is better than last year when it started raining about now and didn't stop until May. Regular reminder - these cows know me. I made a start on clearing out one of the drainage ditches that had silted up and overflowed last winter, so of course young Lewis had to go and stick his face in all that lovely dirt. Sunny day and not too much wind. This year's calves seem to have settled in with their elder siblings well enough. That's Griselda demanding all the brushies again - she's getting quite bossy about it now. Regula...

Moved the calves and their mums up the hill to join the rest of the fold on their winter grazings yesterday. This was them this morning, still renewing old acquaintances and catching up on the gossip. For the calves, this is the first time they've met some of their aunts, half-siblings and cousins, but they all seem happy enough with their much-enlarged family. Regular reminder, these cows know...

Griselda getting all of the attention today. She's a bit of a bully to the others - if I brush them first she'll barge them out of the way. The calves are curious as ever, but still a little wary of me. I always leave it to them to approach and never try to rush them. Regular reminder, these coos and calves know me. Lucy enjoying a good brush on a windy day when she's rudely interrupted by curious older sister, Kate. The combination of bright sunshine and brisk breeze meant she probably didn't see me there until the last moment, hence the surprise. Regular reminder - these cows know me. Diuc Buidhe removed from the fold, it was time to take the ladies back to the field they had been in before. This track is part of the Fife Coastal Path, which can be a bit awkward at times. Today it was just a couple of people on bicycles and a seasoned walker patient enough to wait until the ladies had moved into the field. It's not worth the effort trying to do any cattle work at the weekend...
March them up to the top of the hill...

It's six weeks now since Diuc Buidhe, aka Mr Plums, was introduced to the ladies. That's all the time he gets, so today we walked them all to the handling pens and sorted him from the throng. He was very interested in Cerys, which is not particularly good. If she's coming back into season now, that suggests he's missed her at least once, and possibly twice. I predict, come scanning time, that s...

I don't know why, but whenever it rains heavily in the night, the coos always head for the high ground. I found most of them this morning almost at the top of the hill, enjoying the sunshine and a bit of breeze to keep the flies away. They were interested in the bike up to the point where they realised there were no biscuits on offer, then took off down the hill to go and join the rest of the f...

Took Diuc Buidhe, aka Mr Plums, up to the ladies for his six weeks of work. What a life, eh? Spends the rest of the year eating grass and taking it easy. Moving the cows and calves up to the handling pens to dose mums for liver fluke and sort who is and who isn't going to run with the bull this year. The occasional rustling sound you might hear is me shaking a bag of biscuits, but they'll pretty much come just with my calling. It's always a little tense when calves are involved - they have a tendency to dash off in all directions - hence my othe...

Evening check on the coos, and wee Mary decided it was time to have a sookle from her mum Daphne. The eagle-eyed among you will notice Mary's very unsure on her front right quarter. I suspect she's been kicked by one of the other cows, probably by accident. Calves are quite resilient, but not completely unbreakable! She's healing up now, and her mum's keeping close so she can get a feed when sh...

What have you done with your baby, Gertrude?
I know it's not polite to comment on waistlines but some of those already look quite pregnant! Or are they just 'well lagged' ready for the winter?
How rude! They're just big-boned! Seriously though, it's unlikely any of them would look pregnant this early on. Highlands are round though, and their winter coats are beginning to fluff up.
That’s the fastest I’ve seen coos move. Feeling frisky today. The grass is still very high there. Were they grazing somewhere else before?
They have a very large area to graze on - about 60 Ha or 150 acres. This particular area hasn't been grazed much over the summer, but they're moving more uphill now onto the rougher and longer stuff.
@ That is a very large grazing area. I could tell that patch hadn’t been grazed in a while. You anticipating about 10 new calves this spring?
@@TripleBerg 10 went to the bull. We'll scan them in February to see how good a job he did!
@ No pressure, Mr. Bull.😂 Hope you have numerous positive results. Do you use the same stud service or do you rotate the bulls used? I guess if you’ve had good results in the past you would stay with the sure thing.
@@TripleBerg I only have the one bull, but ten's not a lot to cover. I wouldn't rent in a bull, though that's possible, simply because I want to minimise the risk of disease.
Mud is good for the skin. Beauty treatment. Probably paid hundreds of £s for it. 😁
Just like a big dog !
Absolute beauty from every direction!
😊❤️
The way of nature. Milk is for calfs. They need it.
The calf is an interesting color.
Her dad was blonde, her mum black (obviously!) I've had a few start out that way, but the highlights tend to grow out and they end up mostly black. There is one who kept the henna in her fringe though, spotted in some of the other videos.
@@jamesoswaldauthor I figured the dad was either blond or henna. It will be interesting to see if the highlights remain.
What a good full life they have!! Thank You!! Those fluffy calves & the long eyelashes just warm my heart ♥️
What animal is that?
its called a yuck😂😂😂😂
@@luarcobal3127 what? You fooling? Yak? 😳
@@billrobbins5874 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣, yes i do. of coursei now the name.
They're Highland cows, native to the north of Scotland. The youngsters are very inquisitive, so a mound of freshly dug earth was too much to resist!
What a BEAUTIFUL everything!! Such stout bodies on tiny feet;is there much hoof care?
Do their horns keep growing slightly longer the older they get? One adult seems to have more elaborate horns than the others - or is that just a genetic quirk?
Yes, they keep on growing, and the shape of the horns varies a lot between animals, with some traits noticeable down maternal lines. Bulls tend to have thicker, shorter horns that point more forward. Steers - neutered males - can have massive horns, but they tend to keep growing out wide, with a slight upward tilt at the end. Some of the youngsters here are steers, but they've had their horn buds removed at a very young age. It's least stressful doing it then, and they don't miss them as have never had them. In an ideal world I'd not do that at all, but the steers are raised solely for beef, and the nearest abattoir that can deal with horned animals is too far away. I don't want these animals to spend hours in a cattle truck having lived their whole lives here.
I guess the brushies are not only nice but also good against ectoparasites? They all look so healthy:-)
It mostly gets rid of all the bits of gorse and teasel from where they've been in the underbrush, but you do occasionally comb out a large tick or two!
I FUCKING LOVE COWS.
Beautiful herd and the muddy face!
Content cows.
I bet the ancient people used their coats, like they used, sheep fleece. I imagine it’s extremely thick for winter and gets shed come summer.
Beautiful view
Cows are just big dogs who eat more.
So good, I'm watching twice. Great beauties. 😄
Nagyon aranyosak ezzel a hosszú szőrel a kis bocik
I love how when they're young they don't even have a proper moo... they just sort of buzz. 😄

I love cows 🐂☀️
Me too, on my grill.
Well you have had better weather than we had down south. Solid grey clouds and a chilly wind. Mamma cow just loves a good brush. Her coat looks very nice too. Typical kids though, run away as soon as the brush comes near! 😄
So beautiful 😊
The west coast flyway in action!
East coast...
If the cows had seen that what would their reaction be?
They were right behind me when I filmed that. Didn't pay it any heed at all!
that's quite an itch
I thought your cows were going to blow away.
Weird looking dog.
This should be designated as the Official ASMR Coo Channel.😊
I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. de Mille.
Your cows are wonderful. The scenery is beautiful, but I'm not so keen on the wind. Thank you for this beauty parlour in the Scottish hills!
The cheap microphone on my iPhone camera always makes it sound like a howling gale. It was brisk, but not too bad really, and a lovely sunny day!
@@jamesoswaldauthor thanks James. Just loving your channel. 💖
but ur cows are dope, i love em
hell yeah
These videos are glorious! 🤩
This one must be related to my black scottie, she rolls in it lol
Ha Ha! These guys sometimes go in through their mum's back legs to suckle, rather than from the side. That's fine up until the point mum decides to let go...
Beautiful bull and gentle enough to be handled.
You have the most beautiful cows in Scotland! Love the stunning landscapes and that was some stampede. Your videos are ultra special. 😃
Na hoffentlich landen die armen Tiere, nicht auf dem Teller😢😢❤
I love the way they all walk on the grass and not the stones. No stepping on the cracks! 😄
The babies all look like smaller clones of him, except for two darker ginger ones.
Are you saying that this pathway is not your property or that it’s usual for strangers to cross your land?
The path is a public right of way for pedestrians, horse riders and bicyclists, but it is my land. There is no law of trespass in Scotland (where this is), so people have an effective right to roam on foot (and weirdly a pedal cycle is considered an aid to walking, so they can bike, too, but not motorbike). The hill that forms the centre of my farm is a very popular walking spot, so I quite often meet strangers hiking over it. As long as they leave gates how they find them and take all their litter away with them, I really don't mind.
@@jamesoswaldauthor I like how Scotland has preserved the right for people to hike across lands with public right of way.
@@jamesoswaldauthor Hoowee! That would never fly here in the states. Traipsing through someone else’s property is a good way to get yourself shot but that’s the awful gun culture that a lot of American men have. Some women who live in really rough areas keep them for personal protection too. Trying to get better (stricter) gun laws has been an uphill battle even though they are what the majority of us want. At any rate, love the coos! Keep these videos coming!
Like me during the cardio training.
Moo, indeed!
Under protest apparently 😏
They actually seemed eager at first. Getting to be a pretty big herd.
