Interesting she didn't see herself as a hippy, but as a Beek nick. Because I saw her as the true hippie which means "savy one, or one who is wise to." The way the term was used originally meant the "wise ones." Hip to, meant you were wise to what was going on. They were the ones not really dupped by society. She was definitely in that category. In fact, she suffered in ways I think she felt rejected, because she didn't know what a bad-ass she really was. There was a power there by her child like spirit that I could see caused red-necks to squirm in their seats while she and many "colored folk" sang Lay Down. You have to see the power of how some of those surrendered and were encouraged to sing along. Melanie in that movement was bringing a uniting force where there was division. This is a sign of a sent one, and angel to minister to the blind.

The show was actually Saturday daytime, but that's a minor point. It originally aired in color, but this is a kinescope (filmed off a picture tube). Great time capsule with original commercials too.

great video.! I'm a Mn. Musician from the old days. 1969-1972 -I met Zippy C. in 1971 in a small town in South Dakoda. We opened up for them, We were Ecstasy and they were Lighting at the time. They really rocked. He was so gracious, he showed me some blues riffs, I still use to this day. great memories.
