Hi Alyssa. Everything you mentioned in this video about self doubt, imposter syndrome, talking yourself out of jobs after reading the descriptions, comparing yourself to others and just the general fear and dread of being an adult.. is exactly what I experience. I'm about to graduate with a degree in Mechatronics Engineering and I don't feel ready to start working at all. People tell me that I have achieved a lot but I feel like a fraud (like you said). I have been job hunting today and get so anxious when I look at the job descriptions because of the way they are written like you need to be perfect at everything they say before you are even considered. I look at other people who have found jobs and I think to myself 'how did they get through the job hunting process?' because it seems impossible with this amount of self doubt. Things my family, friends, and mentors have told me that I have written down on my phone: 1. Nobody has everything figured out. Everyone is winging it and if they say they aren't then they are lying. 2. Life is a journey of learning and we never really stop learning 3. If I feel uncomfortable or have self doubt, that's actually a good sign because it means I'm stepping out of my comfort zone and expanding 4. As a graduate, the company you are working for doesn't expect you to know everything. They already know you don't 5. We're allowed to ask questions. If you don't have a boss that lets you ask questions, change job 6. Build up your support network and make it robust. No person is an island and we need to lean on others sometimes. I don't believe that anyone is 100% independent. We all need to rely on others in some way or shape 7. Find yourself mentors in the areas where you want to be successful. You will learn quicker than if you were just stabbing in the dark (trial and error). The mentor would have made mistakes and learnt from them and when they teach you what approach they took, you can learn from their experiences and fast track the learning process. 8. Don't feel any pressure to have it all figured out. Everything happens according to our own timeline. 9. You have a God given higher purpose that is unique to you and your strengths. Once you find that purpose, you'll feel fulfilled and never run out of energy or motivation because you will be contributing in a way that is deep and meaningful. 10. Use your friends as accountability partners. Make it so that you need to report back to them on the progress you have made with pursuing your goals. I find trying to accomplish things on my own, I tend to slack off and lose motivation but if someone else knows what I should be doing, I do it because I feel like I'd be letting them down if I didn't. Sometimes your friends can see your potential where we ourselves can't. 11. Confidence isn't something we create. It's uncovered. We were born confident. When we were kids we weren't afraid of anything. Then as we grew up we learnt logical lessons from experiencing trauma and obstacles and judging ourselves based on our past mistakes and hardship (this is known as conditioning). The logical lessons aren't necessarily true. We can gain confidence again by stripping away the insecurities and negative conditioning we accumulate over time by viewing our past in a different light. It requires a change in perspective. 12. The negative thoughts we get are just thoughts. Just because we think them, doesn't mean they are true. We are not our thoughts. 13. Personal development isn't about adding new qualities to ourselves, it's more about removing and breaking down the barriers and limitations we place on ourselves 14. There's absolutely no point in comparing yourself to others because they have a different set of strengths and weaknesses to you. Your life is designed to be lived by only you. 15. Creative visualisation is so powerful 16. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take 17. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. I have all those points written on my phone notes so whenever I feel the self doubt creeping in, I take out the page as a reminder to myself that things are going to fall into place in good time. I hope this is helpful in some way to you if you happen to stumble across this. Don't lose heart. Things have a way of working out. Baby steps. We're all in this together.
