Tutorial Tuesday: The Kent Raible Chopper. Granulation Shear
In this weeks edition of Tutorial Tuesday I have a special guest, Master Goldsmith Kent Raible to explain how a granulation shear is used to cut thin gauge wire into snippets. These snippets will then be melted into tiny spheres (or granules) that can then be applied to jewelry.
The shears are available here:

For more of Kent's work, and for info on classes he teaches go here:

    What is the best way to remove the pitch from your finished piece? Do you use a solvent?

    So to get the nice crisp edges on the raised areas, you leave the pitch pretty much room temperature? I’m just learning. The repousse never has sharp edges and the background is always really misshapen. The pitch is probably too warm? And, did you anneal at all during the repousse step? Or just once at the start? Thanks.

    This series is so well-done and thorough! It was such a pleasure to watch your whole process, step by step. I now have a much better feel for how each of the tools are used in turn to coax the metal into its final form, and much more confidence in approaching my own projects! You are an excellent, patient teacher, and your piece turned out beautifully. Thank you so much for producing and sharing these videos 🩵🙏🩵

    • @user-tm5rb3ne3e

      Good question. Yes I’ll typically switch to larger sized hammer when I switch to repousse depending on the tool size.

    Sorry I'm entering the discussion a bit late :), a question from a novice; How about the relationship between material thickness and hammer size, is there one or does annealing take care of that?

    • @user-tm5rb3ne3e
      @user-tm5rb3ne3e 2 года назад

      That's a great question, and something I left out. Material thickness and metal type will also dictate what hammer size you use. You may need to upsize your hammer to compensate for thicker and/or harder the material

    Thank you for all your great information. After you fill the vessel with pitch and you are done chasing, how do you remove the pitch from a large vessel? Thank you in advance.

    • @user-tm5rb3ne3e
      @user-tm5rb3ne3e 2 года назад

      No problem Andrew. To remove the pitch, I will usually support the vessel with steel rods or wire over the pot, then slowly heat the vessel until the pitch drips out. Then I’ll wear leather gloves and wipe the inside with paper towels (if the opening is wide enough) until most of the pitch is gone. Then I’ll remove the rest with a solvent like acetone. If I’m annealing, I’ll just burn the rest out
