Welcome! If you want to hear sound demos of different synths, this is the place!
I started doing sound demo videos on YT in 2022, since I felt it was the main thing that interested me, when I'm looking around for some old synth to test. I did not care so much for fancy videos, I only wanted to hear what it sounded like in stereo sound. Started with demoing the Roland Jupiter-Xm, when the new OS version 3 was released in April 2022, and at the same time that helped me discover that synth, which ended up being part of my live rig set. Here we are 2 years later, still posting sound demo videos of different synths and modules. And still occasionally trying to figure out where I'm going with this channel. :-)
Thanks for watching and following!

One of my favourite keyboard players! 🔥Thanks for checking out my video!
Heromoso parches !!! Gracias por compartir !
Yes, they are very nice! Thanks for watching!
How is the keyboard? I love the deep mind 12’s sound engine but that Keybed is the worst ever created 😂So I wonder how this one is if it’s too light and “plastic feeling” I may as well buy the desktop version. The Sonic Sledge I have has a create after touch.
@@CallousCoder Well, the keyboard is pretty light, similar to the Poly D. The aftertouch works well, I think, much more responsive compared to my 80s Rolands. I guess the light feeling of the keys are similar to DeepMind, but I have never played one, so I can't really tell. If you feel that you won't use poly aftertouch, and you have great channel aftertouch on the Sonic Sledge, then I would go with the desktop.
@ thank you for the reply. The poly after touch is a nice to have but then again how often do you use it? After touch itself is usually more that enough for me. But man, what great value for money even if they are “light keys”. And it sounds so nice and deep. Add some extra effects on it and it must be a monster. Thanks for making the video! Very informative.
@@CallousCoder Great value for money, indeed! 16-voice polyphony means that notes are hardly cut even with a long release. And unison the sound cuts through a concrete wall 🙂 I've gotten used the keybed pretty fast, although I would like some more resistance and weight in the keys. Time will tell how useful poly AT will be, but it takes some practice to get used to it, I think. Maybe if your into ambient music and want to do subtle changes, highlight a note in a chord with vibrato or volume changes it could be useful. Thanks for watching ☺️
or the deepmind12 ?
@@user-rv8wb1nl1b I haven't played a DeepMind so I can't really say which one is a better choice.
This does sound pretty good!
@@digitaldiezel5870 Thanks for checking out the video!

@@SamLibman Thanks for watching! 🙏
A very good demonstration, great playing. My mouth is watering over this synthesizer. My hope in the future is that Behringer works harder on the presets, otherwise, this is a pretty exciting keyboard IMO.
@@MJanovicable Thanks! Yes, I also think that Behringer (or any other synth brand) should works harder on their presets. Fortunately there are independent patch bank wizards providing more and better patches for a fair price, if one is not into programming themselves. I find myself adjusting patches to my liking very often, since I feel many factory patches are mostly made to show the synth's capabilities and seldom usable as such in e.g. a band. But this is a great synth, feels very solid. The keys are very light, but I'm now getting used to them! Still trying to learn how to use poly aftertouch for expression and subtle effects 😊
I made one preset on my DeepMind that I can’t stop patting myself on the back for lol. I’m sure there will be plenty of free presets for these synths from the community. It’s kinda fun creating presets that are very different from anything that the synth came with. I’m not a pro when it comes to making presets, but the process is an exploration and an activity in itself. So it’s crucial that the UX/UI is done really well, otherwise I’m just not gonna enjoy creating presets. Judging from the videos I’ve seen so far, UB-Xa appears to be as intuitive as DM (which I own). To be clear, I think without an app, adjusting FX on DM would have been painful *for me* (subjectively, because I like it easy) and because some of these FX have a lot of parameters. The app makes adjusting FX extremely easy, and visually pleasant. Actually, I use the app for mod matrix too, because I can see all mods simultaneously and it’s super easy to map from selection list, which also inspires experimentation (because you see the list and just wanna try this and that, vs scrolling one destination at a time. The app doesn’t substitute the physical interface for me, but rather extends it. UB-Xa has many shortcuts so it might not need the app and still be easy to use? Can’t wait to test it out!
@@Emil_m Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Yes, I think that Deepmind is as direct to use as the UBXa, but Deepmind has more to offer under the hood with a much more complex modulation matrix, so I see your point of using an app to adjust FXs. I think there is not much hidden in the UI of UBXa (and it also lacks effects) so I'm not sure it would bring a lot more in terms of usability. That said, I think an app could be nice to get a quick overview of all the settings for a certain patch with values visible immediately in front of you, instead of having the adjust a knob to find the value for the certain knob. I also hope the community will start sharing presets, both for free and commercial too, since everyone would gain. I may have to consider doing that when I made more patches from scratch 🙂 Do you have any sound example of your Deepmind patch to share?
@ my patch on DM sounds similar to the bass in "A Real Hero" from the movie "Drive". When I got DM I didn't have time to use it much and was almost considering selling it. So glad I spent more time with it, it's now my fav synth :) it's so fun to use and encourages exploration by being so intuitive and straightforward. I think in the past it was ok to make complicated UI/UX, but now days there's no reason for it. I like to be overwhelmed by functionality but not the interface. Some of the best designs are Hydrasynth and PolyBrute imho. Didn't like the sound of Hydra, but definitely want to try PolyBrute 12. Oh and Moog One, some day
@@Emil_m Funny, that happens with many synths I've bought, like Pro-800 or Prophet 08. Especially the 08's factory patches were mostly annoying, but when I started making my own patches or simplifying factory patches the synth started to make sense. Also mixed feelings with the factory patches on UBXa, but it is growing on me! I have to give A Real Hero a listen, don't recognize it by the name.
Somebody will soon comment that it sounds thin 😂😂😂
Yes, to be honest the factory patches in Bank A are maybe not the best and doesn't show the true potential of the synth. Bank B and C has much better, new sounds, but I feel this is a synth that you have to explore and make your own sounds. And it really need some external effects, chorus, delay and reverb make wonders :-)
The funny thing is, I bought an OB same time as the UB(thank you 30 day return policies) and my experience was the opposite of what everyone is trying to say. If anything the OB has a little more sizzle. Not enough of a difference to spend ONE thousand more, and definitely not 3k more. Sent the OB back.
@@ayewhaddupdoe Thanks for sharing your experience with both the UB and the OB-X8! To my knowledge OB features 3 different OB synths, which may be nice to have, but is it 4k nice? Hard to justify that price. For me I've always been intrigued by the Oberheim synths and sounds, and I feel the UB brings me there. And UB is a nice synth on its own merits!
Hi, thank you for the demo. Maybe mic it better next time or run it into a DAW. I can tell it’s a great sounding synth, but between YT compression and what I pointed out, it’s very hard to know the true extent of what it can do.. 👍🏻👍🏻 Have you played an Oberheim OB-X8? If so, how do you think that it compares?
Thanks for watching! No, I haven't played the OB-X8, but it would be nice to try that out! I'm actually not that interested in how a synth compares to the one it is based on, I'm more interested in how it sounds, what I can do with it, if it triggers my inspiration and makes me wanna play it more. My first impressions of UB-Xa are good and it is a beast I still have to learn to tame. I'm not using mics, only for the occasional talk. I'm running the synths through a mixer and to a Roland Go Mixer Pro-X connected to my mobile phone, keeping it simple by only using the mobile phone camera, one, not many. In this way I can easily start recording and later cut out the video down to smaller pieces with minimal editing. Again the reason for this is to just play and not waste time on making it look fancy, since there are many other channels for that. I also so far played synth I've acquired myself 🙂
its like the sound design team got together and thought.. what are the WORST sounding patches we can make for this synth? ...it has a great sound but factory patches are designed by absolute orangutans. The worst ive ever heard. not knocking ur video at all.. just a observation on the actual factory sounds this thing comes with
Yes, I can't disagree with your statement. Many factory sounds are just over the top and I feel I have to adjust filters, LFO and modulation for every sound I play. Many sounds are very alike, too. Bank B with patches by the Synth King is better than Bank A. Anyway, I think Behringer could have provided one bank of great sounds and left the other banks empty for the user. Thanks for watching! ☺
@@patsonmusic yeah , honestly .. .Behringer always do this, their patches are always terrible. The most generic sounds in the world.I almost returned my ubxa due to the absolute garbage sounds that It comes with... But after some time with it and creating my own its a great machine. Such a shame that they cant get a single sound designer worth a penny.
@@Pieces_Of_History2 I take it that you didn't like the first half of Bank B either then? I think there were some great sounds there, but also a lot of repetitive sounds with only minor adjustments. I also have to Pro-800 and I think the idea of the first bank there was to recreate the original sounds from the Prophet-600. For nostalgic reasons maybe nice, but I would have appreciated more new sounds. On the other hand the Pro-800 is very straightforward and nice to make your own sounds.
hey dude im curious, I have a Roland JU-06A right now and want to sell it and get the pro 800. do they over lap enough in terms of sound to not need both?
Somewhat overlapping, but the Pro-800 with it's two oscillators and two envelopes is more flexible. JU-06A is hard to beat for nice pads, but the drawback is 4-voice polyphony so you really have to think how you play it to avoid cut notes. As you know 800 is 8-voice. 800 has a rawer sound. I think I would choose the 800 if I had to choose only one of them, but I like them both a lot. Good to keep in mind that the 800 has no effects at all, where the JU has delay and chorus. I will keep both mine.
@@patsonmusic Yeah my biggest issue with the JU-O6A is the 4 voices. So yes the 8 voices is very enticing to me. Thanks for your thoughts!!
@@jamesgibby8818 And adding to this, the JU has a nice, simple and effective arpeggiator! 🙂
@@patsonmusic so true!
Very nice demo of the capabilities of this little gem. Would have liked to see the tweaks you made so would have been really cool if you had added a close up view of the knob changes. However, great video. Thanks for sharing.
@@imsk111 Thanks for watching! Yes, I've been thinking of adding another camera, but so far I've tried to keep it simple. It is also much easier to just do the demoing in one take instead of gerring into the trouble of editing the videos afterwards. But maybe I come up with some easy way of showing the controls in future videos. Mostly I play around with cutoff, frequency, LFO and envelope attack and release to find the things I like to play with.
@@patsonmusic Thanks, you are right. It adds another level of complexity but using a software like OBS Studio can help to do all this in one go without needing to combine different views afterwards. Looking forward to more exciting stuff from you.
@@imsk111 I've considered the OBS software, but have to look into it. Now I do all the filming and minor editing on my phone, which is limiting, but efficient. Sound goes through a Roland Go Pro mobile mixer from my main mixer board 🙂
@@patsonmusic minimalistic approach which keeps complexity low. Makes sense. However, playing with OBS is fun. 🙂
@@imsk111 I will check it out! Of course I could also use another camera angle to better catch what I'm doing, but I have to buy a proper, adjustable phone holder for that, so in due time 🙂
There's some weird phasing issue in the recording like having the same sound twice
Now I wonder if this could be due to the synth sound coming directly through on the mixer, but at the same time routed to an external effects pedal... I may have had both audible at the same time. 🤔
Great content. Keep the UB-Xa videos coming!
@@SamLibman Thanks for watching, more coming up 😊
UB-Xa niestety ma słabe brzmienie, bo brak procesora efektów, coś jak Clavia Nord Lead 2. Jakby miał prosty chorus, reverb, delay to byłby super instrument i kupuję go od razu. Nie rozumiem polityki producenta, parę dodatkowych gałek i dźwięk ożyłby natychmiast.
Well, the UB-Xa has a very good basic sound, I think. I don't see the lack of onboard FXs as too bad, of course it would have been nice, but it is so easy to add an external effects pedal or pedalboard and suddenly you have a lot more (and better options than any build-in FXs) to work with. Even a simple Zoom MS50 or MS70 pedal gives you all you need to enhance the sound. For a 1000 euros this is really a great analog 16-voice synth.
The instrument has some very good sounds and apparently a lot of potential. I wish you success in exploring this musical world that still remains untapped by many musicians.
Thank you for watching! I find this very nice keyboard with most of the controls laid out in front of you. It is so easy to explore, adjust and manipulate sounds!

Somehow the new Oberheims do not create the urge in me to get one. The only one that even remotely awakens my curiosity is the OB-6 desktop, but that is also pretty expensive. Do you have one or the other? And what's your experience with any of them? I'd like to hear your thoughts! 🙂
@@patsonmusic I realize that everyone looks at different key-features or what to call it. I am an owner of an OB-6 and that was just a lucky timing that I bought it in early years before the inflation else It would have been very unlikely that I chosen it for what it cost today. I think for me I look for the following features first of all and that is a clean interface and if possible an advanced modulation matrix. The OB6 is more of a pure tone with some modulation but at cost of limitations but that is not a problem since it's impossible to get more complex modulation without affecting the "raw tone" of the analogue signal path since it would require some work-arounds when we cannot lay down too many CV routes in a "pure analogue" way. However when it comes to analogue it's not always as easy as to think of it to be black or white there are some greyzones as well. Ok so here is my conclusion. I want to have a TEO-5 also for the reason to have a oberheim machine that offers a complex mod matrix but this do affect it to be less "raw" but that is what I actually look for to add up more colors to the palette. What I love with the OB6 is that it's very clean and easy to work with and it's not over engineered. Have a nice day!
OB6 is great but not the classic Oberheim sound. Instead, it does its own thing.
@@infestedalien Thanks for sharing the insights! I see the TEO-5 and OB6 serves different purposes for you. I also have a Pro-800 and a Prophet 08, and now the UB-Xa, so I think my desire for the OB6 is not that big anymore. I feel pretty covered on the analog front, since I also have a few old Roland synths, Alpha Juno-1, JX-8P, SE-02 and many Behringer mono synths. The need for a complex mod matrix is something I still don't have, often I feel the Prophet 08's modulation possibilities are a little too much. Thanks, and same to you!

Did you get the sound from an Rom Card ? og tranfer via Midi (sysex) ?
This sound bank was from the net and transferred via Roland's UM-One usb-midi interface to the D-20. Pretty easy to do, but every Roland synths has it's own quirks, so it is good to check out instructions before trying it.
@@patsonmusic Thanks. i will look further for sounds for D-20.. I have only found the Rom cards for the D50 online which can be transfered with sysex.
@@Luc_DK Check out llamamusic.com/d110/d-110.html ? There you find some patch banks. And D-20/D-10/D-110 as well as D-5 uses the same structure so the patch banks are interchangeable. Only the last one, D-5, does not have any built-in effects (meaning the patches lack effects) otherwise just do it 🙂 Happy hunting!
Is that Us and Them by Pink Floyd at 0:30? Great song.
Usually I pick a sound and try playing something I feel would fit that sound, so I probably did that unintentionally. The chord progression is the same as in Us and Them, slightly different timing, so I would say very much inspired by 😊. Nice of you to spot that! That song has many nice chord progressions!

Yes, they work really nicely together in many ways! They work so seamlessly together that it is like having a 32-voice D-50 🔥 I've had my D-50 since I bought it as new, then it was out of the house for over 20 years. @@patsonmusic I have the D-O5 but sold my D-50 or NO !!!!
@@stcezaire06 I think that is a good substitute for the big brother D-50. Actually there are very few patches that sound differently on both synths, and the D-05 seems to have a wider stereo picture. Otherwise I feel both are equal.

@@patsonmusic I personally enjoyed the synth bass sounds arpeggiated and then chopped up in a DAW, but it has so many great sounds from pads to leads to bass sounds and I fell in love with the filters. It's just a synth I fell in love with in my youth. Hard to explain to someone, but it's magic. I actually had mine on a shelf for nearly 20 years and just took it out of the box before I found your video. I need to replace the DC port to get it going smoothly again which I will do soon. I'm looking forward to playing with it again. Maybe I'll make a video when I get it playing again :) Have a great day!

Lucky to have found a PG-1000 for your D-50. And cool on looping the D-05 with it. Not sure if you are just matching preset to preset or, if you can access the old sound cards and what they sound like that was built into the lil unit. I own and enjoy a D-550 which is the rack unit version. All I am missing is the joystick and a PG-1000. Lol And of course the cards. I appreciated this demo as I feel the D-50, as famous as it is, doesn’t get as much fan fare as other Roland synths. Thank you.
@@dstrats Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! I'm using the D-05 as a sound bank, meaning it feeds the D-50 with the same parameters, when I change patches or when I'm using the PG to adjust the sound, both synths are getting the values. If you want to hear comparisons between the two, check out videos 1 to 7, where I play either or, or both at the same time (which is huge for pads) 🙂 D-05 has all 5 original sound banks by Roland, the factory set and all cards, so it is nice to be able to play those. Also the Cult of D50 offers more or less everything released for the synth, 1000s and 1000s of sounds, check that out for your D-550! Yes, the PG is a game changer, try to get yourself one of those. Or get the clone, DT-1000. Not cheap, but does what the PG does! Some sounds on D-50 are of course overused, but it is still a great and useful synth today, I think! 🔥

Great video, ive just got a Chase Bliss - Onward to use with my se02 & havnt a clue how to get this working with my se02, do you have any idea, i have my se02 going into my mixer Allen & heath xone 92, thanks in advance, Paul
Thanks for watching! I'm not familiar with the Onward, but it looks interesting. To just figure out the basic functionality, I would plug the SE-02 directly into the Onward (and the Onward into your mixer) and try out different settings to see how it works. Then when you've figured that out, it makes sense to plug the Onward into the mixer as an AUX effect (I guess it has AUX sends and returns) and then you can use the pedal for any channel on your mixer. A quickly googled the Xone 92 and I see it is a DJ mixer. You can plug in the SE-02 into one of the mic inputs or the RCA inputs with the right cables. The mixer seems to have some built in filters and easy crossfade between input channels and that's nice. Hope that helps!
@@patsonmusic Thanks very much for your very quick reply, ive got my se02 in 1 of the channels line ins, and have tried the sends returns but with no joy atm, do you know exactly what i need to do on the se02 to make sure its working correctly, and thanks again, ive subbed:)
@@rokagrooveradio8429 Do you get sound out of the SE-02 when you have it directly connected into the mixer? To make sure the pedal works and to hear it clearly I would first try the following chain: SE-02 -> Onward -> mixer. Then you would hear the full effect of the pedal. I've sometimes struggled with the sends & returns to set it up correctly, cause they tend to mix the dry (uneffected signal) with the wet (effected) signal and instead of hearing the pedal 100% you only hear it 50% or similar, depending how you much you send out of the channel to the aux return. To make it more confusing some mixers also have direct inserts and then you may use the same plug for both out and in (but this I haven't used myself and I think your mixer does not support inserts, so you don't need to think about that). Plug the synth output directly into the pedal and pedal out directly to the mixer to begin with and work you way from there! Happy playing 🙂
@@rokagrooveradio8429 And just to make sure, do you get sound out of the SE-02? Try the phones output first with your headphones, and then the Output jack to the mixer to make sure you get the sound into the mixer. If the mic in jack does not work (it may require balanced cables) you need to check one of the line inputs (which apparently requires a cable with mini-plug 3.5mm out and RCA plug (same as your vinyl player or other home stereo devices use) in the other end.
@@patsonmusic Hi, and really appreciate you taking your timeout to help, i have the se02 connected into my line in channel and all works great, but when i try the onward connected to the se02 it doesnt appear to be altering the sound at all, had no joy with the aux send return either, whatever ive changed the settings in the se02 doesnt seem to make any difference either...

Can you briefly describe how you did it? Looks like using the arpeggiator, which chords?
Yes, of course! There's the arpeggiator running on the JU-06A, a two octive up-and-down arp, and I play triads with my right hand. With my left I play the alpha Juno-1 (out of sight) and mainly the basic tone with a drone/brs sound. Chords are fairly simple, they are Dm Bb F Csus4 C, and the second part is Gm Dm Bb F. The trickier part is changing the cords at the right moment in the arpeggio sequence. And finally I'm only using the FA-07 I'm playing on, as a controller, connected via Midi to the JU-06A. Hopefully you are able to pick this out on your own keyboard now 🙂. What synths are you using?
@@patsonmusic Thanks! I’m relatively new to synth, I’ve only got a Korg Minilogue XD but today I found out that the arpeggiator has a 2 octave rise and fall mode so that gets me started.

I had exactly both the D50 given to my son and the other sold I miss it does the emulation work as well This material is professional, it costs a lot to manufacture
Nice! What did you think about them both at the time? Did you prefer one over the other in some way? Here's a series where I'm playing both D-50 and the Roland Boutique D-05 . I think the D-05 sounds great and is a nice substitute for the D-50. It contains all the cards Roland released plus 8 user banks of patches. And if I layer both synths it sounds really massive. Check it out ruclips.net/video/P3-lYHZsUTE/видео.html
@@patsonmusic I am one of those who sold or gave them away at a time when it “was” almost obsolete. we all regret them the D50 is heavier and more professional, I think it's better to combine with another type of sound, Yamaha or Korg in a complementary way, or even with an organ or piano the D20 was combined with a Yamaha DSR2000 to "try" to make EQUINOXE it was in 1990 something like that even finding one, you need the parts and the repairer for maintenance and overhaul, so a real budget
@@studiodw12 D-50 sure is built like a tank, but also D-20 was very sturdy. My FA-07 feels like a feather in comparison. 🙂
@@patsonmusic today the D50 would surely be very expensive in the 1990s having the D20 and in addition a Yamaha was already a lot at 20 years old, we took used ones, new ones were rare and expensive have you seen the price of a Jupiter today?
@@studiodw12 Neither D-50 nor DX-7 are very expensive today, you can get them for 400-600€ even in pretty good shape. @@cyberrealmagicpro506 Oh, that sounds interesting! Is there a video demo of the sounds you were able to make?
Can you not hear octaves or something?
Yes, can you? You probably noticed that many of the sounds are actually tuned an octave higher on the D-20 compared to the D-50. Why that's the case I don't know. I just played sounds with same or similar names on the synths, factory presets.
@@patsonmusic I ask because comparing sounds is pointless when you play them set to different octaves per synth, which you do here. I figured you must simply not hear the distinction.
@@RobertWrightOneManCovers I get your point, but I'm also dumping octaves all the time as you can see. But still factory sounds with similar names on D-20 and D-50 are not in the same octave as you can see from my fingers usually starting from the same place on the keybeds - and this was a little bit strange I have to admit. Anyway, factory sounds were not too great on the D-20, but I've heard people program some nice stuff on the D-20/10/110.
@@patsonmusic I'd just like to ask Roland why the D-70 was an overgrown D-20 instead of a fully featured flagship D-50. That seemed like a real wasted opportunity.
@@RobertWrightOneManCovers That's a good question, which I'm also curious about. To my knowledge, and I have no experience of the D-70, it was actually a U-series synth. Roland put out the U-110 (which I had and back then sounded pretty great, taking the PCM samples a step further, nowadays it sounds very dated). Then they put out the U-20 and U-220 and was apparently working on a U-50, but probably for marketing reasons renamed it to D-70, maybe the U-series were no hits. I heard it was a little buggy and very slow user interface, but I haven't played it myself. I have a U-220 I will try out at some point. Then thinking about the competition, both Korg and Yamaha started making multi-timbral synths like the D-20, so it seems they put all their efforts on the JV-stuff with the JV-80, 90, 1000, 1080, 2080 for multi-timbral synths and JD-800 for performance synth. Some say the JD-800 is the real follower of the D-50. I haven't played a JD-800 nor JD-990 , so I can't really say. JD-800 offered hands-on control which the D-50 lacked (but you could always get the PG-1000 programmer, if you had extra the money back in the day). Adding to this, Roland's naming policy is sometimes very fuzzy.
Great exposition, thanks! No doubt about it for me, it sounds great!
Thanks! Yes, it offers an easy way to get FM sounds and manipulate them, without having to deep dive into the world of algorithms, operators and carriers.
Very great
I have the Roland FA and the Pro800 too which (don't tell the wife) is like a belt and suspenders as the FA pads and strings are superb. Having said that i dont think the Pro800 is getting returned.
Roland FA is very versatile and a nice keyboard for live use! Pro-800 is different and so organic, instant early 80s vibes with a twist of horror or dystopian movie soundtrack right there! Great value for the money!
