Cycling Indonesia. Indonesian Odyssey Episode 2
This video is part of an adventure that started in Bali on August 15th of 2023. Dad and I set off up the east coast of Bali then catch a Ferry across to the Island of Lombok where we a greeted by friendly local villages and rice paddies for miles. We make our way to the next Ferry and quickly arrive in the Island of Sumbawa where accomodation is a little harder to come by. We bounce from Horrible Hotel to Basic B&B's, Squatting to poo and bathing from buckets and finally arrive in Sape. Where we wait 2 days for the next Ferry. Still squatting to poo but with A/C, so that was a win. We actually had A/C quite a few times which was a nice surprise. After a very early arrival (4:30am) in Waik...

A lot of time and effort went into researching this gear and I was very pleased with how it performed except for the stove, which I explain and recommend another one. Good quality gear can be expensive so remember the best gear for you is the gear you c...

Your video was truly beautiful and inspiring. As a fellow creator, I appreciate the effort you put into it. Sub and 👍20
Thanks for the video. What navigation did you guys use? Are people respectful to cyclists? 😊
Well done. 👍
Look into powersock or free your feet perfect for touring
Good video just subbed
You both seem to have all your supplies on the front of your bikes. Does that feel balanced? No back panniers or storage?
Glad to see your still watching Cathye it seems like a lot of people checked out after Italy finished. Yes it's actually better. More weight on the front gives you more grip around corners and is safer. Rear panniers alone leaves too much weight on the back leading to the front wheel sliding out on bends and even lifting of the ground on steep hills. And most of the body weight is on the rear tyre. If you can fit all the stuff in the front it's better, that's the best thing about not camping. Nice and lite!
Gotta love them squat toilets..😅
hahaha good for the quads
Wow what a beautiful ride sofar 👍 30 degrees in winter is a bit much though..btw, you may want to change the title in ep2?
Thanks mate, Indonesia doesn't seem to be as popular as Italy but it was a great time and the people are so friendly. Ep2 I'm up to right? haha no one probably noticed except you. Cheers mate : )
Why not get a gas stove and ditch the gloves and sooty pots
You can't get on a plane with a gas stove
I confess that I skipped forward ever so slightly, so forgive me if I missed it, but one thing I think would have been useful is the approximate weight of all your gear. I say this because I also spent a lot of time researching and assembling what I considered to be essentials...with very similar, though slightly older, versions of Ortlieb bags only to realise after touring that it was overkill and too heavy and you can do without a lot once you rationalise it further. I think I originally had about 30kg of gear, * plus * staple foods and water which are of course also surprisingly heavy. I'd say unless you're actually cycling off the beaten path...which most are not...cycle touring doesn't actually require carting around as much stuff as we first imagine. Other random points: I find the handlebar bag mount design annoying because it eventually starts loosening and creates noise and I wouldn't have thought you'd need a water filtration system in Italy and Austria...I just buy and carry bottled water as required...big bottle and fresh food items on the last stop before camp.
Hi Nick, I meant to put the weight but forgot. So the Bike and gear dry weight (no food or water) without Camera equipment and batteries is about 34.5 kg and with Camera gear and batteries is about 38.1kg. I could have done without the water filtration but it was handy a couple times when free camping because it meant I didn't have to find water again before camp or straight away in the morning. The only thing I think I changed on the next camping trip was I didn't bring spare shoes or a hat everything else was pretty much the same. I used everything I took exept for the spare parts and tools ect. Have had no problems with the handle bar mount of bag I love it, maybe try tightening the cable if the mount is loose. I also carried extra water I bought when needed and I just straped it next to the tent on the back rack which worked well and didn't take up more room in the bags. My setup is not the lightest setup you can get but is certainly not the heaviest. Hope that helps 👍
@@StevosOdysseys Thanks. Surprisingly low weight total! My bike alone is around 17 kilos I think...and it's aluminium alloy and a small size frame. My tent for sure is not particularly light nor stealthy either...maybe 2 to 3 kg...it all adds up. I tried tightening my handlebar bag cable without much success...slightly better but I still think it's a silly design...certainly not nearly as slick as the main paniers attachments. On the flat I think it's no great extra effort to lug practically any weight around, but on many hills I was surprised even my highest gearing wasn't quite enough...of course individual cardios vary too...I've seen some touring videos where people resort to crawling up the slope in a zigzag...never tried that...never been anywhere rural enough I suppose...but I have had to walk-and-push up a few. Safe travels.
hahaha no shame in zigzaging I've done it myself occasionally, thanks mate : )
Amazing journey, thanks for bringing us all along with you! What's next?
Thanks Ken, Indonesia Is up now!
@StevosOdysseys I just saw! Will be lining up the vids soon! If you're thinking of another euro trip I would recommend Spain, amazing for cycling and quite underrated I feel
Very informative video, thanks for sharing the info. Cheers
Thanks Guys🙂
Some good product!
Thanks Cobb 👍
Loved this series! I enjoyed it so so much. I felt like I was on the ride with you. Great story telling and absolutely jaw dropping scenery. Thank you for taking the time to get such great footage, you have made me want to follow your route. Your smile and how much you were loving it and the cappuccinos an added bonus to the story. Looking forward to your next series. Good job !
Thank you so much !
Thanks for youre video series, enjoyed the northern sections. Will try youre tip down the valley to Garda over from Trento. I start a 3 month cycle tour. Munich to Venice 1st leg and enventually end In scandinavia. Cheers Ian
Thanks Ian. Yes the valley route is more interesting, have a great trip!
I bet that 1 km single track felt way longer!
It was hell hahaha. but looking back now it was one of my favourite days of the whole trip.
Thanks for sharing Steve, haven't seen anything bikepacking related on Indonesia before, so very excited 👍
Thanks mate, It doesn't appear people want content related to Indonesia the views have gone right in the tank hahahah
@@StevosOdysseys it's weird though, some of my " best" vids get no views either..well the important thing is to enjoy the rides😄
Just discovered your channel. Thanks for the nice video. Could you share your root with us ? Seems like you’re using Komoot , right ? Enjoy your trip !
Your welcome. You will find a link to my Komoot Profile in the description.
Thanks :) seems like your travels on a bike are not public due to privacy settings. All the best :)
Even though it's summer here, enjoy your trip and always be safe
Thank you

Another trip wow❤. We still waiting for the breakdown video for ITALY trip about the gears and other information. Big support 👍🏻
thanks for the support, I have a Bike touring gear video coming soon. I will include info about the Bikes Gearing in that. I have a 11-36 tooth cassette and a triple on the front with smallest being a 22. So glad I made that change, it made a world of difference when climbing with all that weight. There are route notes at the end of each episode for Info about the trip.
I really enjoyed the series. I was in Bolzano a couple of years ago and until I saw your videos, I had no idea about the biking opportunities in the area. I'm planning to be in that area this fall and I'm making plans to extend my vacation an extra week to do some biking. I liked your tribute to you tubers who inspired you. I said hello to Ryan Van Duzer last year during my first RABRAI ride. Keep on riding.
Thats great to hear! Yes the Alps has heaps of great riding and if your around Bolzano you should do the Stelvio Pass. Ryan is the only reason I filmed anything, love that guy. I Hope I to get to RAGBRAI one day, looks like so much fun!
Greats series. I especially enjoyed your footage with the drone.
Best thing I ever bought, thank you👍
My wife and I loved the entire series. Thanks for going to all the effort and congrats on some truly awe inspiring drone footage. Loved every minute
Thank you, glad you liked it.
Well done mate. Fantastic footage, great descriptions and the trip notes and route makes this series one of the best we’ve seen. Keep it up
Thank you, that means a lot. Few people make it to the route notes 👍
Well done mate. Thoroughly enjoyed the effort you put into this series.
Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed
This series was really very very good! Hope you have future planned trips which you plan to vlog.
Thank you and yes I do!
Looking forward to indo,it looks amazing!
First episode is up now!
Fantastic odyssey. Thanks for sharing your bike adventure with us.
Thanks mate, Indonesia is up next
Thanks for sharing this series, really loved it. Btw the end was a bit of an anticlimax for me as well,or am I the only one not able to see the last 3 minutes? See you in the next one😄
Thanks mate, 👍
This has been a fantastic series, amazing footage of the scenery
Thanks Jasper
Another great video with amazing scenery.🎉
Thanks 👍
Nice route and debriefs. I've done a few in the area but you've helped me pick a few detours through the alps for this summer (copenhagen to florence)
Thank you and have a great time!
Nice episode!!
Thanks cobber
I just found your chanel and starting from. Eps.1. If you did not break down the cost for this trip and items you used please do. Great work and big like👍🏻
I will be doing a gear video soon about my camping gear and everything. I think I spent about $2000 -$2500 Australian on accomodation food and tent sites on the Rome To Austria and back trip. With the cycling and camping gear, just buy what you can afford. It is better to go with cheap stuff than to put it off and never end up going. Just get pedaling and have fun!
Another great episode, keep it coming!
Thanks Ken👍
Wow! Amazing landscapes and countryside.
Thank you
The never ending holiday, or so it seems watching your weekly episodes. Great filming of everything! What is your tent? Looking for a 2 man lightweight as possible that doesn’t leak. Komoot is great except when it isn’t, lead me to dead ends a few times here in Gippsland. Your route notes at the end are excellent.
Thanks mate, my tent is a Big Agnes Copper Spur 2 person. It is an excellent tent for bike packing but a little expensive. Doesn't leak. 👍
How’s the Sirrus been? Easy to go up hills? Long hours later is the riding comfortable?
I've found it to be great. I have replaced the back wheel with a better stronger rim though so I don't break anymore spokes.
Aha,that's why i don't usually get a good spot😂 then again, i flatout refuse to start the day earlier on my holidays than i normally would..great footage again mate👍
Thanks mate.
tomorrow morning I will be riding along the Valsugana on my way to North Cape and I'm going to Trento, I will stay at a campingsite not far from the place you wildcamped in. superb video as usual, I have watched all of them at least twice. why don't you have a lock? I imagine the anxiety every time your bike is out of sight.
Hmmm.....Nordkapp sounds like an epic adventure. Safe travels!
Sounds like you need to watch 3 times Ferruccio hahahah I had a lock, it broke about 2 or 3 episodes ago😆
which drone did you use?
DJI mini 3 pro
That Val Sugana bikeway (that you rode on day 2) is really nice. Definitely not as rugged and spectacular as Grossglockner and the Dolomite valleys nearer Cortina, but still a really nice ride on much dedicated cycleway. We'll include it in our tour again next month. Last year we rode it on the day that the Giro D'Italia raced thru the valley...which made it just a bit busier than usual! Thanks for sharing.
Yes I didn't know what to expect when i made that route on the fly but it turned out to be fantastic. Have a great trip!
Wow! What a pass, absolutely amazing!
I was sooo stoked!! hahaha
You're sounding more and more Italian as the trip goes on.
that's true, your pronunciation definitely better than in the beginning.
Wait what? Was that a manure frog?? Otherwise a fabulous track, I'd go there tomorrow 😊
no, that's a hay frog. by the way I will be riding that cyclepath tomorrow on my way to North Cape.
@@ferruccio4531 good luck man,fantastic plan👍
Good eyes ferruccio, it was indeed a hay frog hahahahah
This is which month? Planning on doing the same. Looks cold. 🙂 congrats by the way. What an achievement
That was june.
Great work J, love every episode. How about those mountains!
Thank you.
Coffeed out!
Got my buzz on
What bike are you ricin with?
just a mid range specealized sirrus. I have replaced the rear rim and spokes now because of breaking a spoke on that trip.
@@StevosOdysseys sirrus X4? Thanks
