    until you see the original way croissants were laid out in France... Tips crossed, every bit as closed as a bagel. That ruins the analogy, but the message still stands =)) Also, there's a lot of opportunity for the host to arrange the room in such a way that circles are always open. The people who will want to close the circle will curse and get bleeding shins, but a sharp cornered low coffee table does wonders when properly positioned in the room.

    • @theconflictstrategist
      @theconflictstrategist Год назад

      Great point about the original croissants....and great tip for the hosts of a party. When we want to be proactive, keep those circles open so others will feel welcome. p.s. Happy New Year lukearts2954!

    • @lukearts2954
      @lukearts2954 Год назад

      @@theconflictstrategist Thank you, happy new year to you as well... I used to host a lot of parties, and people loved coming because I always put effort in this openness. Actually, I tried to balance it. I always made sure there were multiple rooms with multiple atmospheres, yet in each room I would set things up so that circles would always open up. For example, I would make sure that if a circle were to form, it was forming directly in front of the door to the hallway, so that they were forced to open up every time somebody arrived or somebody had to use the restroom. I would also not place all snacks on a single table, but instead I would regularly fill new plates with new snacks that weren't available before and have them passed around. (that is also why waiters bring bits and bites around on cocktail parties, to force open circles and allow people to mingle) The worst thing you can do, is place high tables like you often see on big functions, because those actually invite people to form a very closed circle around the table, impossible to penetrate. Placing small games (we call them pub games because they used to be very commonly played at the bar of a pub) on the low annoying coffee table also lowers the threshold for a new person to enter the circle. Just grab a game and offer the circle to play it. People would always gather around, like a craps table in a casino.

    Checking in on people makes them know they are "accounted for"... and regarding the "How are you?" question... a more appropriate question might be, "How aren't you?"

    • @theconflictstrategist

    Assuming "Later" is just a brush off, we need to just buckle up and attack the issue. If however, there is a legit reason, clarification as you say is key!

    Great concepts🧭🧭 Moving ahead after COVID depends on creating opportunities for good communication and understanding what to say and/or ask once communication has been set up. Even while many workplaces have gone back to the pre-Covid norms, there is still a higher level of isolation than before, which necessitates that we put more effort into expanding the prospects for better communication👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌

    • @theconflictstrategist
      @theconflictstrategist Год назад

      Well said, Shamima Islam. You mentioned an important point about how the post-Covid workplace is different than the pre-Covid environment. With that and the hybrid teams, it does require more intentional communication. Thanks for your comment!

    One of the frequent criticisms I make of child-rearing, spoken by a childless adult I realize, is that we have no conflict resolution training. It doesn't happen in school, not beyond non-specific advice around "being good" or "not being bad," and "always be kind." Parents, AFAIK, are not teaching it. Most people won't be exposed to it until an undergrad program or leadership training. But if we all mastered it, we could change the world tomorrow.

    • @theconflictstrategist
      @theconflictstrategist Год назад

      The good news is that there are more conflict resolution programs for children and young adults. The bad news is that it is still not common. As you mentioned, most aren't exposed to any of it until colllege, graduate school or during workplace training. Let's be the change! p.s. Damon, thanks for watching the welcome video AND for your comment.
