You Be The Judge! Sinitsina Katsalapov or Papadakis Cizeron
2020 European Championships Free Dance
Papadakis & Cizeron were extremely dominate ever since their 2015 World and European wins (coming from 13th and 15th the year before, respectively). They only narrowly missed the gold medal at the 2018 Olympics to Canadians Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir.
Sinitsina & Katsalapov were usually a bit more traditional in their musical and style choices and maybe that stems from their coach Alexander Zhulin who himself probably feels he lost the Olympic gold because he went outside his comfort zone.
The most recent match up between Papadakis & Cizeron and Sinitsina & Katsalapov was the Grand Prix Final where "Vicky and Nicky" came in last, with Gabby & Guillaume...

    9:57 "We don't know a lot about Lenka Kulovana" ; 12:40 "We have not seen Lenka Kulovana before" hmm... She was 5th at 92 Europeans and 11th at the Albertville Olympics the season before this competition... And she'd already been 6th at Europeans in 1991, and beaten Nancy Kerrigan at the 1990 Internationaux de Paris on her way to win silver. So she sure was on the radar of FS experts... Thanks so much for this upload (as well as so many other gems!!), I had never seen many of these performances - including Lenka's lovely skate here. Watching her clean, light and sharp skating skills, always in control (other than the turnout on the 2A) and with a detailed choreography and attention to detail, right after Surya's skate, to then see that the judges gave Bonaly 5.4 to 5.7 in artistic impression(!), while only granting her 4.7 to 5.2 sure was... "just how things were in Figure Skating" when a skater didn't have a lobby - in stark contrast to the Gailhaguet's relentless, always extremely vocal fight for higher marks... Anyway: Thank you so much!! :D

    Obviously a great skate from both. But Chen Lu, to me, was just magical - due in large part to Sandra Bezic's choreography. The whole masterpiece of a program, including daring just to take the few seconds in the middle of the program, of just standing still and letting the moment linger in complete silence... Art. It needed this perfect skate for her to win after Michelle had been "preparing the judges to give her the title" all season long through superior performances. But the sad thing is: as unlikely as it was for Chen Lu to deliver this perfect performance (with 2 HUGE, clean 3Lz'es, as opposed to Michelle's small jumps), and for Michelle to have a 3T(scratchy landing, slightly dipping forward)2T instead of the 3T3T that was announced as "the queen maker", BOTH of those 2 unlikely things ended up happening. And yet, the judges just said: "Doesn't matter. I don't care". Ugh. This was one of those times where I'm convinced if the starting order had been the other way around, and Chen Lu happened to skate after Michelle Kwan, Chen Lu would have won. This decision was, to me, not OK. :( (though I do love Michelle's choreography and improvement from the cute little jumping bean she was just 1 season prior - to me, she had a beautiful silver medal performance)

    • @fluttershy912
      @fluttershy912 2 дня назад

      It is possible that this was pre-determined if they both skated clean because of Michelle's near perfect record that season. I was always a fan of Michelle since the bigging of time but over the years I have appreciated Chen Lu more and more. Here, Chen Lu's artistry is so natural. Sandra Bezic is a good choice for her but not required for Chen to achieve this level of artistry because it is in her flow, her nature and her presence. I feel like Michelle had a different type of artistry at that time, more about her glide, posture and other technical ways. For her, i think she needed Lori Nichol to provide the artistry that Michelle was not yet able to bring from within yet.

    1) I don't understand how Kurt Browning can call Surya's 3Lz at 1:21 "double footed". Whatever the angle he viewed it from, especially being a skater himself. Weird... 2) Yuka Sato in 1st for me. Compare her step sequence with any one of the little-kinda-steps Surya was doing here and there, and it looks like they're not even competing in the same discipline. Yes, Surya had 2 clean 3Lutzes and a nice 3T-Euler-3S2T, but her landing on the 3Lo (hand down, no control, quick stepout) cancels out the (only)2T of Yuka. Yuka's 3Lz and 3F were "barely squeezed out", and all her jumps obviously are nowhere as big as Surya's, but they're clean and... sharp. Surya telegraphs the jumps, esp. when it comes to the Flip, she just completely halts any choreography or interpretation for several seconds before jumping, and that gives me the vibe of a "jump competition event". The 3T at the end of her 3F3T was missing half a turn, so with the rules of back then, should be counted as less than a clean 2T. And in hindsight, given how atroceously Surya behaved during the medal ceremony, I'm relieved she wasn't ever crowned a world champion. In Yuka Sato's home country, a country where respect and honor are so important and highly regarded, she tried to make the statement that "even just the possibility of ranking Yuka ahead of her could only be a travesty". And that was, at best, not remotely the case. She ruined this amazing moment for Yuka, who wasn't responsible since she wasn't a judge herself, instead turning it into a "please let me hide away right now" moment for her. And even back then, right after they both skated, pretty much all international commentators saw Yuka's skate as the superior one.

    • @fluttershy912
      @fluttershy912 2 дня назад

      It seemed like Yuka was able to not be super affected by Surya, she commented later that she understood why she was upset because it was so close. The whole thing makes me said for Surya though. Nobody could deny that she had such raw jumping talent but to not train her to use edges and flow, to have good posture or to work on having good spins and steps/spirals is just irresponsible. She was so young when she went to that mad house run by Didier and Annik, she was surly doing what she was told. They knew what her jump technique was and they made no attempt correct it. And Surya ended up paying the price in the end.

    • @Frenchie100
      @Frenchie100 2 дня назад

      @@fluttershy912 I hope you're right about Yuka's feelings about the medal ceremony and its aftermath. She's just such a kind and giving person, that it could be that she might not even have seen this as a "magical, once in a lifetime moment for her that she should - and earned the right to - just soak in and rejoice". But if she was hurt, and if she did feel like this "showing" from Surya spoiled the fairytale and was a stab at her honor, she would never admit to it. The honor and respect, again, of the Japanese culture... Let's just say it this way: Surya's behavior made me extremely sad for Yuka when at that time, I should have been overjoyed at Yuka's fairytale come true. And it made me embarrassed that some people around the world would associate this with "French" (I'm only half french, but still...).

    Thank you so much for posting another fascinating comparison! These two share the same coaching staff, yet they have vastly different approaches to skating which, in and of itself, is SUPER exciting. K&D looks more like a typical Leningrad pair-with somewhat raw skills and presentation without too much emphasis on maintaining consistently refined lines or not having “a hair out of place.” B&S, to me, looks more like a Moscow pair-with more focus on clean lines and “contained artistry.” Both are good, and I appreciate them both equally here! I know the audience sentiment was with B&S and I, too, wanted them to win, given the hardships they had faced w/ Elena’s traumatic injury. But they made too many small errors-even w/o the major fall on the final lift. The incomplete 3Tw alone may have been a dealbreaker here. Oksana’s overall skating, to me, lacks the refinement I generally look for in Olympic champions, and her flexibility isn’t always aesthetically pleasing to me. Most of all, the performance here feels tentative…but, then, they skated this front-loaded program without major errors. So, I am a bit surprised that their scores were so close-with Polish and US judges giving them both 5.7 for technical merit! I think the correct pair won here, and I have a feeling B&S would have won easily, had they both skated their programs cleanly.

    • @fluttershy912
      @fluttershy912 День назад

      At the time both teams were pretty inconsistent likely because both were very new. I thought Dmitriev willed this match to work once he chose a partner. Elena and Anton's fall at the end was hard to ignore but just attempting a lift in the last seconds of your program is super gutsy. I think they were the superior team we wouldn't see an equal to for a while but like you commented, they were not remotely clean.

    What a pleasure to watch ALL of these women! Today, *most* world-class female skaters have similar looks, similar approaches to artistry, similar generic music, similar flowy, pastel-ish pretty-but-unmemorable costumes, etc. etc…and many have AWFUL edge quality and technique, designed to complete multi-revolution jumps at the expense of “honest” skating. Sometimes, from a distance, you can’t even tell skaters apart. In the 1970s through the early 2000s, in particular, it was SUPER exciting to see competitions because each skater had her own style, her own aesthetics, her own costume design, her own technical “quirks,” etc. etc., and they all kept us on the edges of our seats. Today, the same excitement simply isn’t there in women’s figure skating w/ the exception of some unique skaters…and I truly appreciate people like AmyNicole uploading these precious videos! THANK YOU.

      Yes without IJS determining what the recipe is for a high score, we did see a greater variety in programs. It's ironic because supposedly the IJS was to encourage more creativity. I am interested to see how the new choreo spin works out but it will probably eventually have a recipe as well. I am not sorry to see the end of the "variety pack" long programs lol. @@lflagr interesting that you point out that it was Dick and you're right he did dish out a bit more. Peggy was new to commentating and had less of a filter here, I believe she got a lot of flack for the things she said so in the future she stuck to fluffy commentary. I think for a long time there was a big difference between European skating and North American skating and the types of programs that were popular in those places. I think there was a refusal to accept the "different strokes for different folks" on the part of Dick and Peggy. I think they were attempting to fuel the drama that Kira was standing in the way of Tiffany getting a medal which of course sounds like great television but isn't true. Tiffany's low placement in figures did that

    Another fascinating comparison! Like your comparison of Shishkova/Naumov vs. Brasseur/Eisler from the other day, these two couple have one thing in common: The male partner is stronger than the female overall. But Mandy did pretty well here-containing her enthusiasm to a minimum, not getting those “stiff knees” she sometimes got-and keeping her composure. Sure, there were hiccups here and there-and what was that haphazard pair spin about at 1:35 or so…but those 5.6s shocked me a little, to be honest. I&D is a good couple, for sure, but I always found Kyoko’s line to be awkward and her feet to be unpointed and flat-typical “symptoms” of Marylynn Gelderman’s students. By comparison, Jason has a wonderfully sensitive lines (minus the rounded shoulders) and feet…and he was definitely stronger of the two. Here, I think W&S had an edge over I&D, especially with I&D missing both SBS paths and a whacky SBS spin. At least, that 5.8 for tech merit was too high for I&D for that performance with two major errors.

    • @fluttershy912
      @fluttershy912 16 дней назад

      I agree with all of that. I felt that although both had a lot to be desired in artistry, that Mandy & Ingo skated this Olympics on the defense or at least carefully probably because they were the world champions. I liked Kyoko & Jason's energy and i felt this was the best they ever were.

  • @nondescriptnyc

    CURIOUS COMPARISON!!! You know, they are both WONDERFUL couples, but they share a common weaknesses-which primarily involves the female partners’ “weak legs”…as though they were skating on eggshells. Again, both are WONDERFUL couples, but they could have been far more successful, in my opinion, had the females matched the power and skills of their male partners. With this said, I find Evgenia’s edge quality to be far superior to Isabelle’s, and S&N had cleaner lines. In that sense, I would have given S&N an edge over B&E. I really like B&E, but Isabelle’s edge quality always bothered me more than her 2As…
