BookSubs
Добавлен 1 дек 2021
A place to help you decide which book box subscription best fits you, your budget, and your interests.
If you're a booklover and are plugged into the book community then you've probably seen book box subscriptions that creators talk about. Yet, it's never as easy as it sounds. First, you have to decide which subscription you want, then the unexpectedly high financial commitment, a multi month waitlist before you can join, and the risk of getting months of books you could care less about once you are signed up. I struggled with this myself so I finally decided to do something about it.
My name is Neil Williams, better known as NeilTheBookGuy on Tiktok, Twitter, and Instagram. I'm a bookish content creator who’s joined RUclips to make in-depth reviews of book subscription boxes. Don't forget to hit the subscribe button to make sure you don't miss a single box!

What happened I’m waiting for more videos
Glued bindings. No custom art. Paper boards. These books are, unfortunately, mass market quality. Stick with other small time publishers who use better materials.
Great content (and editing too!). Keep 'em coming!
A nice, informative, and well summed up vid! Was looking exactly for something like this and came across your channel. Subscribed!
🎉
Wow, I just got my first illumicrate box and I think the quality of items has definitely gone down. Fewer items and not as good quality.
For us subs, ask yourself if $50 books are worth it to you. That is how much book + shipping ends up costing after the exchange rate. I am a tier 2 sub, and can tell you that the UK hardcovers have a low quality stiff glue that makes reading books harder than standard US editions. As well, I have been tier 2 for 1.5 years, and have no idea when ill make tier 1. Tier 2 subs get no signature, factor that in. We are 2nd tier citizens. To other comments: they replaced a copy of mine that US customs mangled no problem.
I have learned of TheBrokenBinding sub too late... The Licanius trilogy is my absolute favorite series and I would pay a lot of money for those special editions...
new to book subscriptions, does it work like you pay the subscription fee and then you have a choice of purchasing? or is the subscription fee guaranteeing you a copy? Saw on their site that said you also have a "skip" option, so would be delighted if anyone could explain to me
Happy to help! So how it works is, you apply to join the subscription(free), when you make it on the list they send an email that lets you join. Next, you pay the first months fee and that cost pays for the first months items! No extra cost. From then on you pay the monthly fee on the first of every month until you want to cancel. Some subscriptions allow you to skip a month or two. TBB lets you skip 1 series a year (which is 3 months back to back). This means you do not have to pay those months.
Are these first editions?
All the special editions printed by The Broken Binding are new, special editions, so technically yes they are first editions. They are also limited. So if they say 1500 copies then that is it. There's no more of those books, in that format with all the sprayed edges etc.
This is just not for me. I have seen other special editions of Frankenstein that are more faithful to the historical and horror aspects of the story. Also. Which version of Frankenstein is this? There are multiple. What does the artwork portay? What makes this company special for taking one year to make a book?...
Hi! I'm learning english and your channel is amazing! I'm new follower here!
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you like it!
Looking forward to seeing what they do with Dracula!!
That sounds amazing!
you need to change your name. it messes up your seo hence it's hard for people for find you.
When you say “name” do you mean title? Or my actually @ name on RUclips?
@@neilthebookguy I agree with the BookSubs being the channel's name might not be helping you in terms of SEO. I think Neil the book guy is a much nicer and inviting channel name. Anyways, your videos are pretty good and I'm sure if you post consistently you'll grow a nice amount of followers. Best of luck!
Thank you so much for the thoughts! I’ll definitely be thinking on that a lot over the next couple days. I was hoping giving it an “official” name might feel more legitimate but maybe I’ve built up too big of a brand name with my other name on other socials. Thank you! This helps a lot
Not sure if it's better than the 3000 Dollar editions by curiouskings but looks really good
I think the difference is the extra content they included. Honestly they could probably charge more plus I cut out a few details about the different materials the book is made of. It’s very nice!
I actually don’t think $500 is a bad price.. My issue is that they may have created the wrong version of Frankenstein. I think the uncut version is what they should’ve produce.
If I understood them right when I interviewed them, this is the uncut version!
@@neilthebookguy😮Then I may get this one!!
I wonder if this is the new original (uncut) Frankenstein that everyone is talking about?
I believe it is the uncut version!
Broken binding is second to none. Videos and pictures do not do these special editions justice. Do yourself a favor and just hit up the waiting list.
I'll say that for that specific trilogy I think the binding quality was lacking but they're still gorgeous
I'm dumbfounded by the quality of your videos given how niche book related contents are, let alone special editions. Well done.
This is interesting to se you review every subscription box. However I think that you are missing an essential information in your review : the skipping policy. Illumicrate is very friendly when it comes to skipping a month and this is one of their strongest selling point. A lot of other subscription boxes are not very customer friendly when it comes to skipping.
Illumicrate!
This is a great channel!
Thank you SO much! I really appreciate it! It means a lot
"Promosm"
I finally made it!!!!🙌🏼🙌🏼
Ordered this edition of Tress as my first sanderson book. Absolutely love the story and the quality of the book is amazing for the price. Will definitely be re reading it often
Thanks for making this video! I didn't back the Kickstarter, so it's cool to see what was in the box and the special illustrations. I did read the book though, and it's wonderful! Hope you enjoy it.
Thanks so much for watching! And yeah those illustrations turned out great inside! Wish ever book had illustrations but definitely get how that could get pricy lol and that’s good to know! I need to get to it but just haven’t had the time. 🫠
Another great video, Neil! Good breakdown of the box.
Thanks so much! I’ve had this one filmed for awhile but didn’t have a chance to edit it until this weekend. A little behind the times but at least I got it done 😂
I got this book too, but only this one, and it didn't come with anything extra. I do think spending a bit more on a nice quality hardback special edition is worth it. People are selling the box that you opened on eBay starting at $149.99. I see that happen a lot when companies put out special edition books. Not sure who is buying them for that price, but people must do it if they are being put up for sale at resale sites like that.
Isn’t that crazy?! I mean there were 185k backers. You wouldn’t think they’d be worth 3x their actual cost. But I guess if someone REALLY wanted a copy then I guess it would be worth more. Curious to see how each of the quarterly boxes compare to each other without feeling the same. I didn’t get the full 12 months though. Kind of wish I had just for this channel but that was before I started it haha
Already knew you from TikTok and today I found your yt channel and I wondered if it is still active an now you upload a new video just 4 hours later
Nice! Yeah, I just started this channel this year but ran into some crazy stuff at work but I have like 7 videos planned out for the next 14 weeks so you’ll see me a lot more here now! Haha thanks so much for subscribing! Glad I posted when I did 😂
I'm the 100th subscriber :) wish you 1000times more. Cheers
How often are you able to get their sub books in general sale? Does it even get to general sale? Is it sold out very quickly once it does?
I have 2 issues with TBB. One is the crappy binding. It's a normal glued binding when they should be doing some kind of sewn binding. The second is their terms. I read their facts page and they won't replace the book if you get bumped corners or any other damage like that. Not a good look if you ask me.
So many people just care about what the book looks like and they don’t care to like into the binding or type of paper used in a book and how long it will last.
Personally I think subscriptions are a poor business choice that create false value through scarcity and empowers secondary markets. Any creator doing this is a fool, leaving money on the table through lost sales. Keep books in print and accessible to all. Dont force a customer to pay 5x the purchase price from a speculator where none of that money goes to the creator. Ive never seen a BB sub book but i did buy their Children of Time trilogy. Once it arrived i could see how pretty their presentation is but to my dismay I saw the books are all glue bound not sown. 100% style over substance. I'd definitely have less bling on a book in favour of superior construction. I dont know if their sub books are built better than their general sale books. An unnumbered, unsigned, plain edged book from Folio is a far greater purchase as it wont dry out and crumble apart over the next 10 years. The Broken Binding is an over hyped bubble created through false means. The NFTs of book publishing.
I understand your frustration! However I do think you’re looking at book subscriptions through a negative lens. I think they’ve done a LOT for readers and publishers. They bring awareness and hype to books that might not otherwise have had that. Those who don’t get the subscription but see all the hype wind up going and buying it from a bookstore. As for the quality of the books. Fall a part in 10 years? Nah man. Those can last a lot longer unless you’re sticking them in your attic haha. Also, TBB is a baby bookstore. Only 2 years old and has significantly helped the reading and author community. They have revived amazing fantasy books in ways that publishers have been unable to. And they just launched their publishing house and book 1 will be their highest quality book yet and will in fact be sewn not glued. No idea what “false means” you are referring to because I have their Children of Time set as well and think it is fabulous. No complaints from me. P.S. I do love the folio society but unless it’s a classic book I expect it to be signed when paying that much. Not worth it otherwise.
😅😅
Just wait for my next one 😂
Love it! Thanks for the breakdown
So glad you liked it! And of course!
TBB is starting their own press, beginning with Ryan Cahill's OF BLOOD AND FIRE. Now that is a book you don't even need a subscription for and it is beyond beautiful. I was 1972 out of about 2500 last I checked. So, I'll wait and hope all the good books don't get the sub treatment before I become a member. Excellent video.
I’ve heard that! You just know their editions will be amazing! And I actually was able to get my hands on a copy of Cahill’s book!!! Cant wait till they print them!
And thank you for the complement! I appreciate that! I’m glad you liked it
The video was engaging and quite informative providing full details on what I was missing out on ;-/. One suggestion would be to spend a minute or so talking about different subscription choices, just just the book without the merch costs and similar.
Ha! But at least you now how to fix it! But thanks so much for the advice! I’ll definitely include that in future videos. I’m planning individual videos for the different sub options so I didn’t include it but it would make sense to at least mention it!
Absolutely amazing editing and high quality video! Can’t wait to keep coming back for more book tips
Thank you so much!! Glad you liked it!!
Are you sure this is your first video?! The quality of the video and the content therein is simply off the charts, dude!
Ha! Thank you for the kind words! I've made a ton of videos, just not one like this for RUclips of myself hahaha
Dat intro tho 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you! Thank you! Had to do it right!
As someone who gets FOMO from book boxes but never subscribes, I'm going to live vicariously through your channel...
Ha! You say that now but you never know! Maybe you'll change your mind when you see a video with a Box you can't live without!
