Spearfishing, Underwater Exploring and Rock Pooling at Sennen Cove.
This year's trip to Cornwall fell on the same week as Storm Lillian in the UK. To escape the wind I first try diving at St. Michael's mount in Penzance. Then I get a window to dive at Sennen and re-visit some old grounds.
The following day I spend some time rock pooling, upturning rocks on the waterline finding lots of different wildlife!
00:00 - 03:38 - Diving St. Michael's Mount
03:48 - 08:15 - Diving Sennen Cove

Spearfishing DIY: Lobster Hook build
Просмотров 5526 месяцев назад
A lobstering Hook is a vital tool for anyone serious about Lobstering, they make it much easier to prize the crustaceans out of their hole. In this video I make a Lobstering Hook from scratch. I grind and shape a Stainless steel rod into a hook and then turn a handle from a walnut blank I had laying about in the garage. Before putting it all together and sealing with epoxy resin. The final step...
Spearfishing the Fleet Lagoon for Flatfish!

In this video I initially started with a plan to dive a wreck at Chesil beach. The conditions turned out to be less than ideal and were not what I was expecting. So I changed my plans and dive a different location just next to it - Ferry Bridge. This tidal bay can house Flat fish and other marine life so I decided to explore this area, rather than simply go home. After exploring the deeper area...
Freediving at Vobster Quay: First dive of 2024!

This video is my static attempt during the AIDA UK Freediving Pool Championship. My total time ended up being 05:46, which is a new PB and I am pretty happy about it.. But, I ended up pushing pretty close to my limit and surfaced pretty hypoxic and things went down hill! Luckily I didn't fully pass out but I did have a minor loss of motor control (LMC)! At the time I didn't really know it was h...
How to make a Freediving neck weight

"In this video I will show you how to make a Freediving neck weight! This is an easy DIY that requires minimal materials and equipment. If you are a new Freediver who is interested in dynamic disciplines, you will 100% need a neck weight if you want to have better control over your buoyancy! Neck weights can also be used in depth diving, to aid the diver in their descent. Neck weights can even ...
Spearfishing DIY: The Shellfish gauge
Просмотров 336Год назад
In this video I design and create a bespoke measuring tool for coastal foraging, lobstering and crabbing. With the wintery weather in the UK making chances to dive very uncommon, it's time to focus on next season and making new bits of gear! Firstly I design the tool on fusion 360, then I 3d print in PETG. After a clean up it is partially assembled and nail polish is added to the images on the ...
Spearfishing DIY: Mahogany Line winder
Просмотров 328Год назад
In this video I make a DIY line winder for Spearfishing! I had enough of tying clove hitches in the water every time I needed to adjust my float line, so I made this line winder. I made it from some Mahogany I had lying around in the garage. I designed the part on CAD software and tried to cut it on my CNC, the job didn't go to plan and I had to finish the job by hand anyway! Despite this, I wa...

What a nature! Cornwall delivers whether the fish are there or not. Larger fish will just be a great additional bonus. Always exciting to look under rocks on the shore. At least in a place like that. Keep the good vids. come and good luck in 2025🤿🐟
Cornwall is epic isn't it! Even with crap weather it still makes me happy to be there. If I lived closer I'd go there more often! I'm glad people seem to enjoy the rock pooling - something I've never really filmed but always do! Next time I'll hit some deeper & better pools near the cliffs. Thanks mate, hope 2025 is a good one for you too! Have you done much diving lately?
@OceanicMatt Absolutely! Epic and beautiful. I also have a place like that. Which is also a bit too far away. Would love to be there more often. Rock pooling is fun to watch👍 It's been a long time since I've been in the water. But Santa has left me a new speargun. 2025 will be exciting. In a few months, diving will start again😃🤿🐟
Nice what speargun?? Santa got me a new wetsuit and gloves 🤙
@@OceanicMatt Congratz! New suit is nice. And new gloves too. Never wrong with some new and fresh equipment. It is an Andrian Thor 100. A wooden speargun From Greece🇬🇷

My mates old boat is in the bottom of there. Peveril Pride
Oh no! How long ago was that?
@ been in there years. It’s a 30ish foot berry boat. Used to fish for lobsters and crab out of Swanage in the 80’s and 90’s it went fishing somewhere before it ended up in Vobster.
@@davepoultney4719 That's cool! I've just looked it up, I didn't see it on my last trip but if I go back this year I'll make sure I have a look for it! It's only in 10 metres of water too.
@ it used to be aft wheelhouse with a horseshoe above wheelhouse door. But think it was made forward wheelhouse after Mike sold it. I think it went lymington way commercially fishing before it went to Vobster
Cant wait to dive Sennen. Got to be my favourite place in the country. Better luck in 2025 Matt.
Thanks Andy, not a very productive trip 🥲😅 fingers crossed for 2025! I love Sennen, it's great. Are you diving it this year?
Thanks Matt Great arial shots. Like the view looking up at St Michaels Mount from the sea. Cornwalls great will be back for a week around the Lizard and 3 weeks up on the North Coast. Last year we went to the lizard for the first time the snorkeling looked good there.
Thanks a lot Clive! I enjoyed the dive at St Michael's - wanted to do a whole lap of it but the weather and time didn't allow. Bet it's great on a calm day with the tide in! Still yet to go to the Lizard 🥲 maybe one day! Did you check out Kynance cove? That's one I'd like to see. Looking forward to doing some more trips this year.
Possibly amber jack…?
If it is heard they taste good.
Now you've mentioned Amberjack I think it looks pretty similar to an Almaco Jack?
Like would you not just shit yourself 😂😂😂😢😢😢😅😅😅

Hi
Seal stares at him. Next thing you know. 💨
I thought it was cute…but then… 💀
Same!
@ lol!
That's a female southern Elephant Seal, because, it doesn't have the iconic elephant nose. And because it's significantly smaller than a male southern elephant seal. The other kind of elephant seal is only called that, not because of the nose, but it's size, I think with the females also being significantly shorter and smaller than the males.
Deffo a female or young male
Awesome!
Once again the music ruins everything
Sorry you feel that way! There is another without music if that doesn't tickle your pickle 🥒

is it of any use in spearfishing . I am currently using a weight vest along with a weight belt with a combined weight of 5 kilos in the summer for diving anywhere from 5 to 15 meters , if i were to use this instead of a weight vest would i have any benefits since it looks to be pretty uncomfortable when deep diving as it rests directly on the chin possibly inhibiting the equalization proccess
Hi mate, Yeah you can use them in spearfishing, it's obviously a personal preference really. You'll be limited to how much weight you can comfortably fit in a neck weight compared to a weight vest though. From experience I find neck weights pretty comfortable when spearing and don't notice it's there after a while. It does drop when head down onto your chin a little but it doesn't interfere with equalisation. Makes for a nicer duck dive and descent too. The main drawback for spearfishing is it reduces how far you can turn your head to look around - albeit nothing massive. I've yet to try out a weight vest but I'd expect vests to be more comfortable and it won't restrict head movement. The benefits would be its a cheaper alternative to a weight vest, smaller and easier to put on/ take off.
@@OceanicMatt thanks for the quick reply man i wasnt planning on putting a lot of weight anyway about 2 kilos same as you show in the vid i will definitely try it though perhaps it will be even more comfortable than the vest i have in addition to being safer since its simpler thanks for the helpful video
@SpyridakisSpearfishing No worries! 2kg is a good weight or 1.5kg. Still takes a bit off the waist and isn't too thick. If you get the fit right it's pretty comfy and you'll barely notice it. Worth trying out and if it's not for you, just put the lead shot back into the weight vest! Let me know how you get on!
@@OceanicMatt will surely come with an update as soon as i get in my summer suit again and get to try this once again thanks a lot
@@SpyridakisSpearfishing Awesome! Good luck and thanks for watching 🔱🤙
Is winter time a good time to spearfish down there, and what thickness wetsuit do i need?
Depends really, winter is much more challenging than summer but can still be diveable. I went out yesterday in Dorset and it wasn't too bad. Visibility, fish numbers and water temp all drop during the winter months though. Also the weather being not so good makes less opportunities to dive in the first place. I've not dived Cornwall in the winter yet, tend to go in the summer.. I dive in a 5.5mm suit which kept me warm for about 3 hours. A 7mm would be better for winter and some decent gloves!
Nice video, I am gonna do it now.👍
Thanks! Hope it goes well! 🤙
That elephant seal looked insane
I know! It's those mental looking eyes
That’s a sea lion 💀 not an elephant seal…. Elephant seals have a bug snout in them and they would be way bigger than that like eight feet 😅
Definitely not a Sea lion - check it's ears. It's either a juvenile male or a female.
Hey mate, enjoying your videos! I'm wondering, how do you mount your action camera to your head these days? Mask? Head strap? Something else? Looks like you have mounted it to you hood in some way in this clip!
Hi mate thanks! Glad you've enjoyed them! So I've tried a few things.. I've used head straps but lost 2 GoPros in past so don't use them anymore 😂. The mount you can see in this video is a 3d printed mount I made that screws into the suit hood - great until you buy a new jacket 😂. My current iteration is mounted directly to the mask with epoxy - which is pretty solid!
Not an elephant seal, pretty sure it’s js a leopard seal. Those are maybe the most aggro seals tho!
It's definitely not a Leopard Seal, you can tell from the shape of it's head and colouration!
Yummy🤗🦀

@@OceanicMatt Amazing, thank you 😀
This behavior makes sense when you see they’re all in the same family as badgers and minks
Did it hurt?
No, luckily it didn't make contact with me, only my GoPro pole. It would have definitely hurt if it had managed to grab hold of me though!
@@OceanicMattthank God you're safe
@@the_only_dynamite_gaming Thanks, I didn't think much of it at first but when I got back at the end of the day I realised how lucky I was! 😅
OMG is the man ok? does he still have his head?
My head is still firmly attached to my body 😂
@@OceanicMatt That's good 😀😂
And that is just why we cannot get bass in Plymouth Sound. The dam frog men are taking them all.
Not commercial fishing? We only took 3 bass that day, pretty sustainable by today's standards! Don't think I've been called a Frogman before either, I kinda like it!
Something else, possibly pups are visible in the background breaking the surface which could explain why she attacked
Those are Commerson's Dolphins. But it does look like they were harassing the Seal doesn't it. Probably already stressed and defensive
Seal was being chased by an orca i i think or something and it was super defensive
How do you manage the float line? And not get tangled
Try to stay up current from it so it doesn't do loops around you. I don't think having it clipped to your weight belt helps - which we had to do on this charter, usually I have mine attached to my gun. Can be hard to avoid in certain situations when you're concentrating on dispatching a fish and it's merrily running rings around you in the swell! Material and thickness can impact how susceptible a line is to tangling also!
Bros eyes tell me he has seen some things 💀💀💀
Is he still alive?? 😢
I am still alive!
Epic trip. Challenging to be calm when you are super excited. See lots of fish and people around you start catching fish. I know exactly how that feels. But you managed to calm down and secure the catch. Thats nice! Extra fun with dolphins and a new species on the catch list. Great video👍
Thanks mate! Was a great day out, had a good laugh. We were searching for the shoal for about an hour and when it finally appeared I was very excited! The conditions were actually challenging at times with the swell and tides! I was getting a little frustrated after missing a second time. Shows much better your diving can be if you just relax and take your time hey! That Trigger tasted phenomenal!! Every day is better with Dolphins too!
@@OceanicMatt The same thing happens to me. It will probably be several times in the future as well😅 The tension builds gradually. Everything goes wrong. Then I realize what I'm doing. Calm down. Catch fish. Fun with large shoals of sea bass. Hard to choose which fish. I think I'll be put off a bit. Never tasted Trigger fish. It had a special shape. But! Cool catch👍
@@Spearfishing_joh Yeah that shoal was the biggest I've seen so far so it threw me off! Found it very difficult to pick out a fish. More often than not, I have to remind myself to get a grip too😂..I'm sure one day will be calm and collected from the start! Triggerfish has a firm and very sweet meat.. is really nice! This one tasted very similar to the ones I've caught in the middle East! Must share a similar diet.
Good size Bass Matt (loup der Mer according to my French wife) looks like Eddystone lighthouse where you were. Water temperature must be at its best now.
Thanks! It was a beautiful table fish, perfect for two people, got some decent sized fillets off it! Water temp is perfect atm, I was in Cornwall the other week and it was about 18 degrees! Lovely and you don't need to wear thick gloves which is nice!
@@OceanicMatt Hi Matt spent the month of June in Cornwall weather wasn’t great but plan to return next year. Currently i am land locked in Switzerland 🇨🇭 so only have the lakes to swim in all year round. My 11th year here, crazy as i hste being away from the ocean. Thats why i am keen to follow yourself and Joe Pike….i am full of Envy.
@@clives344 @clives344 Nice, where abouts did you end up this time? I remember you saying a little while ago about being restricted to lakes! Still, I'm pretty envious that you get to reside there! Beautiful country.. At least you get amazing winters with snow! I missed most of the good weather this year too tbf. When I went back to Sennen the other week the sea was really bad too - during storm Lilian! Glad you get something out of my videos also 🤙
@@OceanicMatt currently working in Luzern my wifes lives in the South of France near Beziers. Next week we are snorkeling around the Costa Brava (Cala Monjoi) a dive centre mecca. Its a protected marine area very Cliffy with coves. On the other hand where we live along Montpellier Beziers its just flat beaches not that interesting for marine life.
@@OceanicMatt last June went to the Lizard for a week was impressed with the coastline there. Saw quite a few people snorkeling around there. It made a change from North Cornwall
Hi Matt thought you were in another country further South as I recognized it as a trigger Fish but wondered what it was doing in UK waters. Amazing whats heading into our waters these days. 🙏 for the video.
Hi Clive! Yeah Grey Triggers come to UK waters late summer! I've never seen one before though so that was pretty awesome! This one was in Devon! Seems we get some cool visitors in the summer, someone speared a Bonito the other week down at Chesil which is pretty cool! Cheers for watching Clive!
