Life on Film Presents: Unplanned Friendship feat. Abby Johnson & Shawn Carney
Life on Film presents "Unplanned Friendship" featuring Abby Johnson (And Then There Were None) and Shawn Carney (40 Days for Life), recorded live at the 2024 Rose Dinner Gala following the National March for Life.
On May 9, Abby and Shawn sat down with Campaign Life Coalition's Ruth Robert for a relaxed and engaging conversation about their 'unplanned' friendship.
Both individuals have been fighting on the front lines for over a decade, saving countless lives through their advocacy and the organizations they run, but that wasn't always the case.
Thank you to everyone who attended the Rose Dinner and to all our wonderful sponsors for making this possible!

    This is a valuable documentary, but it would be much more impactful without the preaching at the end. Does my faith inform my opinions? Sure. But this issue goes so far beyond religion or personal faith. This is about our fundamental valuation or devaluation of human life as a society. And about our civic duty to prevent our legal and medical systems from going down a very dark path. Please don't make this divisive or partisan in any way. Don't drive away people who aren't in lockstep with you politically or religiously. This is something almost everyone should be able to come together to solve.

    I'm having trouble understanding why anyone would be in favor of euthanasia, except for those who want it for themselves. Even from a completely neutral, amoral perspective. What is their motivation? Are these just sociopathic individuals? Are they resorting to this because they're honestly so terrified of overpopulation that they believe this is the lesser of two evils? There are very few types of rational, non-pathological people I can think of who would passionately advocate for euthanasia, unless they themselves are dying/depressed. Most people aren't highly philosophical, strictly libertarian thinkers who genuinely believe every man and woman should have unassailable dignity and control of their own deaths for some lofty, ennobling reason. Most people are very practical creatures these days. So what is the motivation for pushing for freely accessible, universally available death for other people? It's a bizarre and disturbing stance on so many levels. I also can't help but wonder how bleak, hollow, and colorless these people's own lives have to be, for them to be so blase about other people dying for no real reason, without even any principled foundation to their reasoning.

    I almost subscribed. The documentary itself raised some valid points, (I’m disabled) but at the end, the 2 blokes were talking about christianity and all that. NOPE! I was a practising Christian for 30 plus years. I’ve been treated horribly by fellow parishioners. Later in life, I was pushed to bankruptfcy. Recently, I was at a very low point and demanded MAID from my dr. I’m tired of living w/2 disablities, have severe ptsd, and am barely holding together, even, giving treatment another chance. I don’t know where exactly I stand on MAID, as I want to research both sides of the debate. Pls don’t bring religion into this. There’s a growing number of ppl coming out of severe religious trauma. Those of us who don’t havfe a religion also deserve love and respect. And we can still agree on some subjects.

    • @FloppityFlopFlop777
      @FloppityFlopFlop777 13 дней назад

      I feel similarly about forcing religion on others, as a Christian. Love, by definition, can't be forced on anyone; that's a contradiction in terms. I've faced more than my fair share of nonsense from those types for years. That's why I stopped attending church (when they went MAGA 🙄🤮) and now study the Bible at home. I also think for myself, and the herd mentality became unbearable. But please don't be swayed in any direction by heartless false Christians with no discernment. Even a broken clock is right twice a day. This type of euthanasia program is objectively discriminatory, predatory, and devalues disabled and suffering human beings at their most vulnerable. To offer assisted death to the suicidal or mentally ill is blatantly irrational. I can't truly consent to something in a state of crisis or mental upheaval. I have PTSD, too. I know for a fact that in my darkest moments I would've reached for an option like this. But things did change and get better. And now I'm in a great place mentally and otherwise -- for years now. I'm doing better than I would've believed possible in my younger years. Professionally, too. I can't stand the thought of some misguided doctor cutting short someone's life just because their better days haven't arrived yet and no one has the patience to wait and keep trying. I'm strongly pro-choice, but human life -- real, existing human life -- is far too valuable to give up on that easily. People are being rushed through MAID in a matter of weeks, or even days in some cases. Doctors who are willing to end your life so casually do not care about you, so why would you listen to them when they tell you to give up? Forget religion or politics. There is meaning and purpose in life, and joy and worthwhile emotions, wisdom, understanding beyond suffering. If you haven't already, I recommend you read Victor Frankl, as well some of the philosophers. I think Sartre and de Beauvoir might resonate with your experience. Frankl was a Holocaust survivor who was able to help turn around the lives of many of his patients. He said the perceived loss of self-determination was at the heart of most people's despair. But even in a concentration camp, he discovered that the Nazis couldn't truly redefine or dehumanize him because they couldn't determine his inner life, his thoughts, his beliefs, etc. The life of his soul -- so to speak. The life of the mind. And that's the most meaningful, worthwhile, and free life of all. Don't let anyone determine that for you -- or rob you of that. I don't know how well I wrote this, but I wish you and everyone in a similar position the very best. Life can change. I'm living proof. And my darkest days were right before the dawn -- years ago now.

    I wish this had come out in Nov 1997. I wish I hadn’t been so forced into by my (Ex & late) husband. They had recently started the medicine induced abortion and at that point in time I believe that there was a 5% or 8% failure rate for the medicine and it failed me the first time and I changed my mind. I did not want to have an abortion. I changed my mind and they reminded me that you know, I wouldn’t take another. I would have to have it surgically performed and could not do that and they had no information and no nothing about reversing it if they had, I would’ve reversed it you can try to talk herself into thinking it’s a miscarriage and so once your body physically, what you kill in your room I suggest to any woman who is going through anything like that please talk to someone please go to a pregnancy resource center. Please look at that ultrasound that they will give you there for free. That is a life inside you a gift from God, not meant to be murdered.

    I walked out of an abortion clinic in Grand Rapids, MI on February 11, 1987 when I was 16 years old and pregnant. My parents took me. I didn’t not want to go through it at all. I prayed harder than I think I’ve ever prayed in my entire lifetime to this very day that I would not have to have the abortion I did not know that I had reproductive rights, so fortunate that I had an awesome counselor there who listened to me and then brought my mom in with me and we left and I’ve never regretted this decision at all whatsoever. She’s beautiful. She looks just like me when I was born and she has her masters degree there’s no way that I could’ve done anything else but have her. She was never unwanted. She was just untimely a bit too soon in my life, but trust me there are way way worse things than a teenage girl could go through as opposed to terminating and killing her baby only 10 weeks. I felt her life inside me like I never felt before. It was amazing. I do believe that it was the Holy Ghost that spoke to me February 6 of 87 and my algebra classroom I was in the 10th grade I finish school. I went to college and I saw the most important thing is that she was born. I would’ve killed myself if I had already made up my mind but she’s alive. I’m alive, the greatest man from the most is it she was born that I wanted that more than anything🙏🏻
