    I think the soft pastel and charcoal work well with watercolour painting, it does add interest without going over the top and spoiling the initial watercolour.

    I can understand why you would want to try mixed media as a way to spur creativity. However, I still prefer to look at sonething that is all watercolor or something done in all pastel, etc.

    Thanks for the video! I belong to one of those artist who love to paint with soft pastel. Have you try painting on velour paper? It's nice....I also paint with oil pastel and it is so nice to paint on velour. Mostly I use sketch paper. I love the way you paint and your watercolor paintings. My media to paint with is watercolor, soft/oil pastel and oil. Interesting to watch your RUclips. Excuse me for my English, I am from Sweden. Wish you a lovely day!!

    To propagate the idea of the ONE cure for problems was and is a marketing mechanism. Alas we, the YT users, tend to react positive to click baiting. Therefore it is understandable people use this mechanism. I still find it annoying by the way...and am happy about everyone not doing it. Scanning through RUclips I look for thumbnails showing art I like. Next I look how and why these artist make their paintings. I do not try to copy but to let me be inspired. Yours is one of these channels. Thank you for that.

    I'd say this is an auspicious start for a RUclips channel directed toward newbie / wannabe watercolorists. The subject matter was exactly the right one for a person just starting out, and the coverage was straightforward and not overly technical. Good job. I hope this will be Chapter One of a comprehensive playlist of beginner videos. Good luck in your venture. Subscribed.

    Good vid Paul. The worst thing about soft pastels is the bloody dust! Fine if you have a dedicated studio, which I don't! I also tend to overthink the thing and end up putting in too much detail, which is not what I want to do. The paintings look fine and impress the people that see them, but they don't impress me. I'll get there eventually, I hope 😊

      I think we can learn a lot from past art.

  • @psterud
    @psterud Месяц назад

    Cool subject. I agree with the latter, that there are no rules in art, only concepts, but those, I feel, are important to learn at some point along the way. The two things are not mutually exclusive, learning and creating, and are ideally done at the same time. We all started making art when we were very young, as toddlers. And much of that art was great because it was free and didn't concern itself with any rules. Most artists would love to get back to that kind of freedom, before adulthood siphoned it away. And yes, there does come a point when a person can learn too much. For example, the debut albums of countless bands have a great deal of character and originality compared to their later ones, largely, I feel, because they didn't know as much early on, and their energy went into making things interesting instead of correct. But the best albums tend to come a little later after some learning has been accomplished, just not too much, which can cause art to stagnate and become programmatic. I also agree that art takes courage. A lot of that has to do with a fear of failure.
