Western apps are allowed and it is classified as a, "Special Administrative Region" which means it doesnt go fully with CCP leadership and has Autonomous rule over itself as it has its own prime minister. You may see chinese flags and residents using P.R.C passports but rest assured. Insignificant changes took place. Bagpipes are used in the HKP musics, hymns still kept in its marches up to this day playing old british musics along with PLA marches. It shows the co-existence and tolerance of the locals in the region. The red scare from the cold war is still going on and id like to go against the stereotype. If you want, you can visit vietnam, china, and hong kong or macau to see for yourself. Vietnam stands better than its Filipino neighbour ramped with corruption and poverty while the Socialist system ensures jobs for everyone with the right to pick their own occupation with capitalism as its system of economy
