VW Polo 2001 - Rev Counter Problem?

It's only just started doing it. Basically it rests at 6000rpm and when I turn the engine on its about 6800rpm. So it's adding 6000rpm to what it should be idling at. Any ideas what's the problem and/or how to resolve it? Would be greatly appreciated!
Looks like the needle has pushed itself back if you take apart the gauge cluster and carefully push the needle back round anti clockwise to Zero and see if that works otherwise like what others have said probably battery or a connection problem otherwise the motor has gone
This is caused by a defective battery. Change battery and the problem will disappear
gauges are 20€ just buy a new one and change it
