3 Reasons A Tarp Is The Ultimate Survival Tool
actually, you should open up your sleeping bag as soon as you make camp so the compressed fill can regain its loft to keep you warm. That's hard to do if your body lays down on it immediately.
Thank you I’ve been fighting with those silly straps…., never thought of binder clips.
I’ve backpacked for nearly 50 years - from the Superstition Mountains, down into the Grand Canyon, to the high country in Montana, Alaska and Washington. What you say is so true. There’s been water shortages, cactus encounters, grizzly bears, a broken tooth, a midnight rescue of a fallen injured stranger crying for help in the night. There’s been boot failures, surprise snow storms, a family of skunks raiding our packs plus a thousand wonderful memories and pictures in my mind. Backpacking has been one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done - and I’ve done a heap of living in many ways. I still use my old external frame Camp Trails pack and homemade pop can stove. It’s cooked many a steak and pounds of bacon and dozens of eggs over the years. Y’see we leave the first morning with frozen New York Strip steaks. By supper time they’re thawed but still cool. Next two mornings it’s bacon and eggs. If you happen to be camped any where near other backpackers you’re sure to have visitors when they smell that cooking. Happy trails!
Thank you for such a thoughtful reply
Camping with bears. There's a bear that lives across the street from me.
That's wild.
@@campingforge it's true
I've learned to hate inflatables. Bought one, used it in my house not outside, and it deflated. If I can't use it in my house, I'm not going to use it outside
For car camping - I have now moved to thick closed foam pads. I will post new reviews this year. For backpacking- I agree deflating can be a problem. With my Big Agnes - it was comfortable I had to constantly inflate in the night. I am trying a new inflatable to see how well it does.
Ah that’s why they wont let me build me homestead there.. I even said one day i would help feed the animals 😂
Hah.
I've been to Yellowstone many times and as a fairly local resident, we've always known this...
Thank you for the reply
As a bear myself i can confirm these amazing fact are true
Thank you. May you find a picnic basket today
Camping!!!! Do it every summer, all summer for work lol. Pocket that per-diem baby!!
I hope the per-diem is good :)
I was watching a video of a guy who judged the wind and just gave a quick spray and let the wind carry it 30 yards and the bear jumped and ran off. I was impressed.
Wowza. Thank you for sharing.
Would you really sleep out in the open in somebody else's backyard who is bigger than you? Ask yourself that.😮
Haha. Yes. I have done it many times :). Thank you for replying.
Most important rule would be NOT to camp in bear country. You’re welcome 🫡
Many people agree with you. Thank you for replying
The most IMPORTANT rule, when camping in bear country: make sure your life insurance premiums are up to date. And, make me your beneficiary. 😂
Definitely an unique response. Thank you for replying
I would think Texas has lots of bears everywhere. I learned something new today.
Thank you for replying and glad you learn learned something.
When my family goes camping we always have guns
Thank you for reply.
It gets hot in the summer in canada, too, but the worst part about summer camping around June and July are the bugs. They seem to all be gone in August (except maybe around 9-10pm). In winter it's cold but we have a lot of fun with that. Hot tents, fires, snow shelters, ice fishing. Cheers for the great video!
Thank you. Happy camping.
When I first started looking for Grizzly bears in Yellowstone in the 70's we would even take off the clothes we were wearing for dinner and hang them up to air out. We had bears come into our camp every night and put their nose on the tent and take a big sniff. This was terrifying but we knew the bears would not be smelling any food. Now, I use an electric fence to protect the camp and still practice safe food and clothes handling.
Thank you for the story. If you have the space (car camping vs backpacking) - I think it's still a good idea to change clothes for sleeping in a tent in grizzly territory. If backpacking, I would do my best to cook meals on the hike before I got to camp. That way the curious bear that smells the food is heading to where you were and not where you are.
Is there a good brand of bear spray and where can it be purchased? Thanks for the great video.
If you have a choice - Mace Guard will most likely be you best for combination of range and volume and portability (per Field and Stream). But what you want is actual bear spray with 2% major capsaicinoids. That's the active chemical and the highest concentration allowed. If you are buying online - make sure you are getting actual bear spray. You may also be able to rent spray if you are traveling. And I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Been looking for a video like this
That's great to hear!
Step 1: strap on a backpack. Step 2: put one foot in front of the other. Alternate and repeat.
Technically true. But there is more nuance because it's easy to believe via social media we're all trying to thru-hike the AT instead of just hiking a mile for a nice quiet spot.
your good at editing and makeing videos in susprised you aint got millons of subs
Thank you.
@@campingforge your welcome
aka summer camping in Norway😄 but idea is the same, you just start with the stuff we ended up here 👍
Haha. I’m in Texas. Definitely nothing like you have for winter. We really have to only worry about being uncomfortable. I camped last night & was below freezing. I woke up & stayed in tent until 8 am. It was above freezing. By time I came home at 12 pm I had to have AC in car on because I was sweating.
Long sleeve cotton shirts bout 3 of them and 3 tshirts over them with a hoodie coat and beanie
A great way to layer. Though I would not use cotton as a base layer because if it gets wet - it tends to stay wet for a long time. Even if you are just sweating.
@@campingforge yeah I usually have a poly hoodie I'm a big guy so I don't really get cold but I am very cautious about keeping stuff dry lol
thanks
You're welcome!
👀📺
Agree....
This was very informative. Thank you
Hey, I'm confused on something. Wouldn't the ring from my tent just slip right off these HikeMax stakes? They don't have a curve or a bend so I am confused on what is stopping the rings from the tent for just sliding off.
You can also heat water with the can in instant mashed potato and have tuna and potato
Hiya!-Like it!total unusualt rip. godspeed-:))
Your story at first lost me
A camp fire. Mountain flowers. Evergreen needles. Moist earth. Fresh-caught trout roasting over the fire. Morning coffee on a cool morning. Her soft hair as she snuggles close in the twilight. Lots of wonderful memories in this old man.
People that say "cotton kills" are using it wrong! 1) Thermal regulation is key to wearing cotton. 2) Synthetics are miserable to wear if you sweat much, you'll actually sweat more in Synthetics, and are a bacteria factory. 3) Use Any fabric incorrectly, get it wet with no way to get dry and you'll have issues... especially in winter! 4) I always use cotton against my skin and simply shed layers if I'm getting to warm! 5) Wool is best on all counts!
Thank you for your reply. However, cotton should not be worn now as a base layer. It is heavy. It traps sweat. And it will not keep warm if wet. I wear an Under Amor t-shirt as my base layer. Barely there. Doesn't trap sweat. Doesn't trap bacteria (it's the least smelly thing on me after a week in the backcountry). I do wear a cotton flannel as an outer layer because it's warm.
@@campingforge Again.. those that are having issues with cotton, are Not using it correctly. We'll just have to agree to disagree..! :-)
If you have a solution to the physical problems of cotton as a base layer while backpacking or hiking (vs car camping because you can always go home), I would love to know what they are :).
Great information thanks for sharing your experience 👍
Thank you!
This is beautifully filmed and presented my friend. Love the shots and narration here. 🔥🔥
Thank you very much.
Have you tried using it as a pillow?
I have not. While it might work, I would not to put my water at risk like that. My most comfortable alternative pillow was my rolled up tarp when I was cowboy camping. Next was my puffy coat. Then my clothes. But unless I'm backpacking more than a couple of miles, I'll always bring my camping pillow.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you
@@campingforge you are welcome
So just dont wear all cotton when you're cold and wet.
Thank you for the comment
Informative and beneficial video
Thank you
Very cool.....I can't wait to try this!
Great!. I hope you enjoy it
dodge, dip, duck, dive and dodge. Right?
Thank you for your reply
I was like 5 C's hmmm ...CANTEEN!!! ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)........ hit me with "Container" ....Ruined my day ... ಥ_ಥ, I hope you think of this the next time you sit around the CAMP fire ...【ツ】
This is well done.
Thank you
I’d like to get into cowboy camping, mainly just to save weight but I’d also really like to experience that. How was your first experience sleeping without a tent?
I had no problem. While most people worry about snakes, the weather is more important. Snakes won't bother you but rain or wind will make you uncomfortable or worse. I can assemble a shelter quickly with my tarp and trekking poles. Also I am ok sleeping with a bug net on my head to stop any buzzing bugs. But you are right saves weight, space, and time.
the six c's of survival... you forgot COFFEE
Haha. I love it.
