It's also been said that Callas had dermatomyositis, a rare, connective tissue disease that causes a failure of the muscles and ligaments, including the larynx. She had begun showing signs of this disease as early as the 60s. Even her Dr confirmed that he had diagnosed her in 1975 and the medications used to treat it also affected her heart function.

My headphones are good but not great. Jussi actually make me feel my ribs. When I grew up, I only heard Håkan Hagegård¨s rendition of "O helga natt", because my mother loved it and I was more into Joy Division and The Smiths. I envy the lucky ones that experienced Jussi in a proper opera house. Thanks so much!

Recently a RUclips channel played snippets of O Holy Night as a contest by various tenors(most of whom are 21st century and not opera-trained). Unbelievably, they chose David Pierce, the Christian gospel Mariah Carey singer, over Jussi. Naturally, they should have played the full rendition of Jussi's version. Musical ignorance abounds in this generation.

I began my experience with opera in the 60's. I don't need to tell you what a golden age that was for spectacular opera singers. During a summer vacation, I purchased the first RCA Forza del Destino with Price/ Tucker/Merrill/Tozzi/Verrett. I didn't believe that singers could make those sounds naturally- I suspected electronic manipulation. Then, finally I experience my first live performance in a theatre of Carmen with Bumbry and Luis Lima and Richard Torigi. Then it became clear that that type of singing was,"real,". I must confess that the most impressive skill of causing a pianissimo tone to seem to just,",materialize," out of thin air such as Price, Amara, Caballe, Konya, Tozzi, Tebaldi in her early days could produce still mystifies me. Can you explain how its done? Sorry, my list of singers with this capability wasn't complete. I guess that actually indicates what a golden age the last half of the 20th century was.

Love your tribute. To me Joan was the greatest voice and technician of all time. She was in a league of her own, a marvel of prodigious vocal abilities with an instantly recognizable timbre. She has been such an inspiration for any singer.

You reminded me that I have never been able to make it strait through her 1st Aida recording without stopping for,"encores," of her entrance in Act 1. Her voice seems to float in from heaven. After hearing this recording since 1967, I'm still saying to myself," how is this sound possible?," Each principle singer in this recording is so outstanding, I listen to their parts multiple times. I'm sure you've perhaps done the same. By the way, did you ever note the beautifully spun pianissimo notes produced by Tozzi as he moves through Amneris' wedding blessing at the Temple just prior to Aida's," OH, Patria Mia,". His singing is exquisite.

In 2008 she was selling more records than the next three sopranos combined. Today she remains the only recording artist whose record sales have not declined post mortem. And there will be a huge spike on the release of the new film, 'Maria'.

I had the honor of hearing Ms Ewing live at the MET in December of 1993. She was starring in Les Troyens(not my favorite piece, but I digress) In that particular performance of Les Troyens, I was in the nosebleed seats. But you know how incredible the acoustics are at the MET....but even with that, Maria hit a note so powerful that I felt it deep in my gut the way you feel it when you're in an elevator when it descends rapidly. I have never forgotten that moment or that physical sensation. She was a powerhouse!

People who have heard him live say no recording is even comparable... Still it would be perfectly valid to say what is recorded of his singing are easily the greatest vocal recordings in history. There is such majestisism, sweetness, raw power and yet a subtle but inescapable touch of sadness in his voice. Imo as well as... oh yeah that of what many consider the greatest tenor of all time being Pavarotti, Björling is a step above.

LP could be considered the best soprano ever and I would not disagree. However, I disagree with many of the comments. If you are going to dissect the sound note by note, no doubt her high notes achieve perfection. However, many of the comments that follow are inaccurate. For example, the crescendo- decrescendo part in Forza ( or mesa di voce) is not the best ever. As a matter of fact that sound is asymmetrical which is precisely what is not supposed to be. The decrescendo part is shorter. Price has a tendency to scooping the sound and drop the final note of the phrase. Her diction is foggy at best, etc. I am not putting the greatest down. Just saying this person’s analysis is flawed. I believe if you are going to make statements of this nature, they have to be technically accurate. Again, as for beauty of high notes, passion, commitment and so many other good qualities, Price reigns supreme.

Thanks forr this clip. I actually met Mariz Ewing. I was dating Kathleen Battle at the time. I drove Kathy to Chicago. The event was the Ravenns Festival with James Kevine conducting the Mozart C minor mass. Maris joined us for breakffast. It wss summer and I was surprised to see her wrapped jp as if it were winter. She explained that she was protecting her voice from the cold of the air conditioning. She and Kathy discussed Mirella Freni's negro featufes and how to use their own negroid features, especially the lips

I know that she was also Katerina Ismailova´s in Shostakovich´s "Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk" at the Opéra Bastille, and I have the recording made at that moment, but i have not been able to find any visual witness of her portrayal of the doomed Leskov heroine. Someone knows if there is some visual memory of Ewing in a role that seems to be taylored for her actoral skill?

My first opera singer and forever favorite. I'm still upset she died. Have you listened to her "In questa reggia"? She could have easily been a dramatic soprano, and I really think she was a dramatic coloratura. Also, have you heard her "Let the Bright Seraphim"? The most ridiculous high D I've ever heard!

Those lucky enough to hear Bjorling live say recordings don't do him justice. Caruso's widow found him the best since her husband. The first opera I ever attended was Il Trovatore starring Jussi Bjorling. I was ten years old, but the moment I first heard that voice, and I've never heard another to compare, I was hooked both on opera and on the tenor who is still my favorite. He still holds the Metropolitan Opera record for most curtain calls, 32.

When she walked into the rehearsal room, it was as it the late Queen had arrived. She had a regal bearing. Indeed Queen Elizabeth appointed her to the Order of Merit, an elite group of the truly great in several fields. A Dame Joan was devoted to Her Majesty.

I worked on several operas with Dame Joan and Maestro Bonynge both in America and Australia and I can confirm that vocally she was beyond compare. I also worked with Caballé in Spain and she was superb, but Sutherland left me speechless in terms of virtuosity, power, and beauty. Also she was a truly elegant singer in her phrasing and in her manner. She always treated colleagues with courtesy. Plus she and Maestro Bonynge were lovely and classy people and motivated by a real love of music and singing.

There's some Mozart concert arias from around 1958, possibly earlier that are wonderful. I love her Santo dibPatria as well. Early versions of Lo hear a gentle lark, and many Handel pieces. All before she really came out as a dramatic coloratura soprano. Oh, I'd love to hear some of your recordings from the dramatic soprano repertoire 😊
