There is a farmer that handles them since there chicks. And all his roosters are gentle . He can pick them up
It may have lost much of its nutrition.
I have kept them the mineral salt block out. Just in case. Do you think that is good or should I have like those protein tubs out.
@HolloHomestead I would google the nutrient content of year old hay. It may be fine. I know dried grains retain their nutrients for years.
My black copper maran rooster is a nice boy and brings worms he finds to his hens.
I adopted a black copper maran and he has been a nice rooster. But, we let our chickens out to free range at least a couple hours everyday and I constantly take time to pick our rooster up and to talk to him. In the beginning he was terrified of me and would tremble when I held him. No one imprinted with him before I guess. 5 months later and he doesn't tremble and actually makes his bock bock bock bock sounds while I hold him. I'm about to get a dozen more straight run chick's and I won't be keeping any roosters we end up with from there. I will try free to a good home on market place first and after that will be what I don't like doing.... if I keep competition for the ladies the mean rooster will win and that's not happening here. Our rooster Wally is the king here.
Yes I definitely like a nice rooster as long as he does his job.
What is a "fault finder"?
It is supposed to show which way the fault. Like which direction the tree limb is laying on your fence
@@HolloHomestead Electricity sensor, senses if 120VAC is connected to the wire; used to check for broken connections or open connections
Seems in this one, two parts; a generator sends signal and a sensor picks it up. Similar operations as electrical tracing or ethernet tracing.
Thank you for including the child in what you're doing
They've never got a black one from my place, all the white ones have been destoyed
❤❤❤❤🙏🏻👍🏻
Might have to try this. Our mice aren't even waiting for the food to get low. They climb in, dig up to the top, and I imagine start swimming around like scrooge McDuck. Caught them jumping out when I went to lock up the coop.
Side note that I haven’t updated. It would be wise to glue a metal washer to the outside of the bucket. Just a cheap fender washer roughly the same size. I have found some mice find there way on the piece of wood and just nibble at the whole till the whole is to big.
Had a barred rock rooster that jumped at me and landed in the soup pot. I have a cuckoo maran rooster he tells me to stay away from the hens with his dance but never attacked. Had black copper maran roo was very nice.
It's nice to see the Divorced Dad's guy turn his life around.
Don’t know the reference but thanks for watching.
@@HolloHomestead It's a weird, satirical card game about divorced dads. You look like the protagonist.
The meanest rooster I have ever seen was a Black Jersey Giant. I know they are supposed to be gentle, but this one was mean both to people and the hens.
I had a friend that had one of those. He wasn’t nice either
Cool!
Thanks for watching
I'm very sorry for your loss. Livestock loss is very hard.
Yes it is.
How was this video about fattening up a skinny cow? You mention they are on more grass than their previous home, okay. You feed them some, what appears to be commercial feed but you don't say what feed (ingredients) or how much per cow. You don't mention if you have a plan. But I appreciate that your video didn't drag on for an hour. I tuned in to see how to fatten up a skinny cow.
Maybe I didn’t explain my self enough. I wanted the video to be more of this is what we are trying what would you suggest type video. We are new to cattle and need all the info we can get. I have a short attention span when I watch videos so I try to just make short videos. Thanks for watching.
@@HolloHomestead I have Dexter cattle also. My cows are bred and not weaning their 8 month old calves. Therefore they are looking more like a dairy breed than a beef or dual purpose breed. So, I know your dilemma . Hopefully you and I will find a solution. Have a blessed day.
No grain, just good fresh grass. Grass feed, Grass finished. Best for healthy cows. Healthy cows, healthy calfs, healthy beef.
Looking forward to the new adventures.
Me to thanks for watching
I am not an expert on roosters, but I suspect for aggressiveness/chillness is probably a mix of breed traits and flock traits (lineage and socialisation). Chickens learn from each other, they pick up good habits and bad habits. I don't have any BCMs. I do have one cross that is 3/4 wheaten maran and 1/4 white plymouth rock (she is my forever baby girl). I have a small flock of all different breeds because they are basically pets, with benefits. My cross lays a darker brown egg with speckles, similar to the one shown. The white plymouth rock genes must be strong, my cross has a buff/ginger neck frill, and white/buff body. She has only gone broody once. I do have a buff orpington, and she goes broody at the drop of a hat. If I got her a clutch of fertile eggs, she would be a top mother, her personality is chill and super friendly. Even when broody, she does not peck, just fluffs up and tells you off.
It could definitely be part of the way I give them there space but I have never had a good Rhode Island Red lol. I believe the black copper is just a little more chill than some of the other breeds I have had.
@@HolloHomestead RIRs, girls and boys, are reportedly a bit more aggressive with other breeds. I have passed on the RIR for that reason, I like a chilled and harmonious flock (I don't have any roosters, just the girls). All but one of my hens are chilled, the eldest (who now thinks she is the boss) is only aggressive around food/treats, and at the cat, who is scared of her.
Thanks for another video! ❤
Thanks for watching

I have a question , why do all diy incubators except yours have lights on the top, heat rises, wouldn’t it be better to have on bottom? Honest question , please answer as I am starting one soon
Honestly I am not sure that it is that big of a deal if you have a fan in it to circulate it. If you are trying to do one with out a fan I would for sure put the heat at the bottom cause you are correct it rises. Make sure you put your temperature setting probe at the level your eggs are. So that it is the correct temp where the eggs are and not just at the top or the bottom. Hence the fan. Try and keep it even
Thank you , I have everything ordered, there is a new controller that also monitors humidity , so I ordered that , just have to find wine fridge
What are you feeding the chickens if I may ask? I've tried Dumor crumbs but very often I find big clamps of blue mold in those bags. Whole corn they don't eat.
It’s just the local farm store layer pellets. They get it in regularly so it’s not that old. Some of the more expensive feed probably doesn’t sell nearly as quickly so it may have been in the back on a pallet for a while. Not sure if they have sell by or packaging dates on the bags I am sure they must.
I have a Brown Leghorn roo named Yondu that is a great guardian of my free range mixed flock and very attentive to his girls. The only problem is that he absolutely hates my guts. He doesn't like that his ladies come running to me for treats or that I invade his house to collect eggs and clean/maintain. He has spurred me several times and drawn blood on a few occasions. He is relentless, despite many attitude adjustments that I have imposed. To some it would seem necessary to send him down the road, so to speak, but I have a certain amount of respect for the warrior mentality he exhibits. He acts like a little sweetheart to my wife which demonstrates his intelligence due to the fact that she loves him and wouldn't let me get rid of him if I wanted to. I also breed a separate flock of Salmon Faverolles. Faverolles roosters are probably the most docile roos I have ever had. My big boy Napoleon will chill out on my lap, even with the girls nearby, but as far as a guardian, he's more of a lover than a fighter. They make great pets, but will often run away from danger rather than put himself between a predator and his hens.
lol that is funny.
The Easter Eggers look like hawks and black chickens look like crows. A high contrast color chicken is spotted by predators. Air and ground. White chickens bring in the predators.
Yeah white chickens are just asking for it. You have to try way too hard to keep them alive. In my opinion
I have a black copper maran he runs Up to me dancing around he never has attacked me and has protected me from a rooster who attacked me and was trying to attack me again the problem is I don't trust him around my grandchildren or me at time's I have had chicken's for a year I'm not sure what to do with him any suggestions ♥️♥️♥️♥️
If he’s young I would say it’s just a matter of time. That being said Quattro my last Black copper rooster never attacked but he also was not super friendly at times. He wouldn’t eat out your hand most of the time. He seemed to be on guard. So I gave him his space and didn’t try and provoke him. In my mind that is what he was for. Attack a threat but be on guard always.
The ducks rule that roost!
Man ducks are just nasty. Unless you have an actual pond that they can bath in every attempt I made was just nasty lol
Good info
Glad it was helpful!
Great advice. I see so many men try to show who’s boss, just to show what? Only makes thing worse. Kindness always pays off.
Yeah I have never seen someone tame a crazy rooster.
@@HolloHomestead I have a Rhode Island Red Rooster. He’s eight months old. Several months ago he started getting extremely aggressive… As soon as you were in his sight he’d run you down and attack. I got many battle wounds from him. 😆 I started to just constantly pick him up and give him lovings. I would even bring him in my house to take a nap with me on the couch. He slowly started to calm down and I haven’t had him attack me or anyone else for over a month now. I can tell he even enjoys me holding him now. I don’t know if it’s just a coincidence that he decided not to be mean anymore or if showing him a lot of love actually solved his aggression. I thought of starting to take in other unwanted aggressive roosters to see if I can help them too, but my fear is of the roosters attacking each other. I don’t think that’s something I could solve.
I grew up on a farm as oldest. All chores were mine, and have had best luck with flock raising from babies. Recently had to deal with very aggressive black rooster, (belonging to neighbor)and would try to run up on me from behind. I wasn't afraid of him, but got to point I was carrying broom around. He would literally see me across yard and come running at me, a got into batting position with broom. Rooster no longer with us.
lol I understand. I just won’t deal with an aggressive rooster. I don’t need them to be my friend and want me to pet them. But if they attack me any time I come close he has to go.
I have a sweet rooster. Easy to handle
I hope my newest one will be nice. He is right now.

I like a fella that thinks like me. I also like to pick stuff up on the side of the road. Don't believe me. Ask my wife. Keep on keeping on my friend.
One man’s trash is another’s treasure. Story of my life.
Seramas are very sensitive and very small, even for silkies. They should be separate from larger chicks and need smaller crumble. I water my chick crumble down to help them eat. I would even put in a thermometer to make sure they are not too cold. I’ve only ever lost one. They are so different from ordinary chicks.
Yes they are pretty cool chicks. Think I may hatch some more this year.
Fix the floor of the coop before they break their legs. 🙄
I appreciate the comment but I have raised a lot of birds in this coop and never had a leg problem. The wide gaps on the far end are right below the perches. If I put boards there they would just be full of crap every morning.
I've got a black copper boy that was a stinking handful for a while. He was wanting to jump me anytime I got in striking distance. And he was the sweetest of them all when he was young before the hormones came along. Took a while but he has finally settled down and don't have any problems with him anymore. His big brother was a huge help with that too. Rooty is my number one. Very thoughtful and calculating bird. But he covered my back when Chester was being so bad and kept an eye on him and would jump him and kick his butt anytime he started to make a move on me. None of them like to be held or handled much at all but still spoiled none the less. Rooty is in my face all the time wanting treats and insists that I bite almonds in half before giving them to him. Gets pissed and may even bite me if I don't. lol Not often I test him. That honker will pull a blood blister in a hurry. lol He did hit me in the back one time. I yelled at him before turning to face him. Thought it was his little brother again but when I turned to face him he backed up looking hurt. I sure was when I realized who it was cause I instantly knew why he hit me. He was protecting a young bird I had just introduced to the flock and it was screaming like I was killing it when I picked it up. Felt bad for yelling at Rooty for doing his job. But we got past it and I'm more mindful he knows what I'm doing with any of the other birds he watches over. No issues like that since. Got my hands on some Blue Coppers this year. Man I'm enjoying those birdies a pile too. Sure nuff beautiful birds, same awesome characters. That's my goal with the Marans, to wind up with all three colors, Black, Blue and Splash. On the other side of the fence I've got Self blue Ameraucana's, Boy that's a whole nother ball of wax but another kind of awesome bird that's a joy to have around.
Well I just got another Black Copper Rooster fingers crossed that he has a good temperament. He is young right now but seems calm.
He'll be fine. They're awesome birds. Really not hateful by nature. Hand feeding treats to them goes a long ways even if they do just turn around and feed it to the girls. They seem to like it that way.
I'm on my third hatch with a broody! Haven't lost one chick and have 100% hatch rate. She's sitting on 7 right now. Had 2 broodies from my first Gen welsummers and this current broody is one that hatched last November
Yeah I worry sometimes about the young broody hens. Sometimes they jump off without warning 😂 the older ladies know what is going on.
Too funny 😂
Yeah she was hiding 😂
There is a new updated version of if that works very well
I have had good luck with most all the rite farm products that I have tried.
Your olive egger looks like my black star hen.
Yeah I am not sure exactly what she is a mix of. I am pretty sure the roaster was a black copper as that has been my go to rooster for the last several years. But I have had several different hens over the last few years. Production reds to cream leg bars.
I agree. Silkies are worth keeping just because it is so much easier than mucking around with incubators and stuff.
Yeah they have a much higher hatch rate than the incubators I have messed with.
