Anti-war songs like this touch deep into the heart but still the madness continues with young 'Willy McBride's" and now his children are being slaughtered on a daily basis. We live in a mad world run by crazy people.God help us.
This song was written about 1940, by an Australian who was born in Scotland - Eric Bogle. He titled it " No Man's Land" He also wrote " And the band played Waltzing Matilda "
The officers got all the shiny medals whilst the young lads of the P.B.I. { Poor Bloody Infantry} got a hole in the ground, I'm English by birth, but, I hate the class system and the unwritten rule that you must 'respect your betters'! I'm 76 now and obviously no youth, and this has always 'boiled my piss', from a very young age, you must respect what?
The English were as cruel as the Germans. They got their children from Children's homes and experimented on them with Radiation. Burning their scalps cc 1939 to G9g knows when. They my Brother and I. About June 1945. My Brother was about 4 and I 2 and 6 months. One day while in my the Nurses, cam along and kept saying, they are going to bomb the Germans and one picked me up to show me row's and rows of Aircraft with white stripes on their wings
It's a strange thing. I've been listening to Eric Bogle sing his song, and then listening to other versions by other artists, all with someone saying that this one or that one are the best version. And it's a real tribute that so many have sung this song ... but I have to ask ... what gives them the right to change the lyric??
Visited several battlefields and gravesides in Belgium and France since I first heard this song on my visit to Ireland in the 1970's and it still brings tears to my eyes.
How does one even compose themselve to sing this song without break out in tears man? I happen to stumble upon in my playlist and during work and I'm a sobbing mess now God this plays my heartstrings like a drum Slowly goddammit...
I am an American woman age 70. Of course I don’t remember anything about WW one. But I know a lot of young men from my country, from Ireland answered thr call and I never went home. what can I give them? I can give them my love and my aberration Appreciation so many died. which is now consumed by left-wing radicals who want to make us a Third World country please pray that America will be saved. In my opinion it is the best war song of all times. My family gave 3 men to the Somme and my grandfather a desert rat was captured and spent years in Italian and German POW camps. I have spent 22yrs service to the RN humbly defending my country.
During the 2nd world war my Grandmother’s brother was drowned by the Japanese in the fall of Singapore. The Family who he stayed with for sometime while stationed over there helped protect him until that fateful night and he was able to send letters home to my grandmother because of them. That Singaporean family later wrote to advise my Grandmother what had happened and even sent a heartfelt letter to her along with his belongings. She also received the official letter that he was missing in action and his body was never found but she knew from what the family told her that there was no hope. Although she never met them in person, that gave her great comfort with losing a brother that was just 17 and had lied about his age to enter the war. They sent letters to each other for a good many years after too. I’ve never really shared this with anyone and it is nye on 20 years since my dear Grandmother’s passing. It just seems appropriate with Anzac Day tomorrow here in Australia.
Eric Bogle wrote this. He immigrated to Australia From Scotland. He also wrote And the band played waltzing Matilda. This is a great song, but can be triggering for some.
Eric Bogle, a Scotsman, wrote and recorded this song and other deeply moving songs. This version by Finbar Furey was at the top of the charts in Ireland for more than a year.
Magnifica poesia sull'inutilità della guerra e sul vano sacrificio di giovani vite per soddisfare i delirii di potenza della ristretta cerchia della classe dirigente mondiale.
An absolutely beautiful song! I am part Irish myself, I now live in Spain. The freedom of Europe was not easily won. The sun shines bright in the Costa Blanca for all of the fallen heroes now.
This song was played for my cousins funeral
This is God, no one else. Yes, it's time for revival again
This is one of the most beautiful and poignant songs I have ever heard. We saw the furies last year and they were so good.

Heard this song for the first time when visiting Ireland in '79. It blew me away then as it does today. I'm afraid the world will never change.
The Brits took everything’ they’re not having this too
Actually offensive to the boys who fought. Funny. But some of them thought fair
My family did

Peace!
My Grandfathers war he got gassed and sent home and when he was deemed well sent him back to the somme, god rest my grandfather.
... and now they're at it again, with their New Cold War, and the attempted conscription of the young. 😔
I first heard this as a young kid. The words left me stunned. 30yrs later it still makes me cry. One of the finest songs ever to be written.
Every time any some CHICKEN HAWK War mongering politicians think of sending soldiers into battle they should have to listen to this song.

My hope is that one day these songs get through to the right people and as a result war is but a distant memory for all of mankind.
