Funny titles aside, Gene Cokeroft and the Suntones is arguably one of the most influential and important barbershop quartets of all time. Swedish financial advice in just 35 seconds - “Han Spar” Barbershop Tag
really basic question, is the bass clef transposed up an octave? or perhaps the other way around?
Excellent video! As for your question at the end: I generally like outlining what kind of textures I will be using in different parts of the arrangement with just a few words at each place before starting with step 3. This way I can gather inspiration about what I want to do and get a feeling for how the arrangement will look at the end without getting too bogged down by the details, or without feeling limited by the harmonies I have already put down on paper. But I'm very much a beginner, so anything I say should be taken with a grain of salt 😅
Thanks!!! That sounds like a great idea!!
I liked version 2 the best. The slight drift in the bass sounds cool, and it feels like the group is really embellishing the lead melody in the most resonant way possible, without the lead compromising whatsoever.
Yeah, I kinda like it too, but sometimes the bass sounds too “off” in version 2, so in cases like that, I would split the difference between all parts and go with version 3.
Wow, what an incredible video! As someone who is a beginner (even at basic music theory) this video perfectly captivated me the entire way through. Although I didn’t understand everything (patly due to English not being my main language) it was still super interesting and easy to follow and I can definitely tell that the video had a lot of thought and care put into it. Can’t imagine how helpful this would be for someone who really wants to learn. Me personally, I loved the examples and I had fun singing a long. It was also incredibly cool to hear the comparison to really see how all the small changes add up! Felt like I had to leave a comment to show appreciation for putting in the time and effort in order to give out this information for free.
Thank you so much for you kind comment!! It really means a lot to me to hear!! ❤️ I hope this can serve as a guide and get you further into the arranging journey!
Great video! Just one question for a beginner though. If I’m using a music notation software like musescore, what would be the best voices to use to listen back to while I’m writing?
Thanks, glad you liked it! I usually use something that can sustain long notes (so not piano, for instance). I usually just use vocals or trombone/saxofone
I hate you for this, it is an insult to the art of barbershop itself ...I will suggest this to my quartet
Hahahaha 😂😂
Isn’t version 3 just what happens naturally? In my college acapella group we don’t talk much about just intonation but when we sing passages that have barbershop-esque homophonic harmony we tune to each other so the chords ring. I feel like if everyone is listening to each other it’s the most natural way to fix this issue
Also, I think it’s okay if the tonic drifts a bit. As long as it’s not too much, only people with perfect pitch can really notice and it’s never bothered my friends with perfect overly much. It’s okay for music to not sound like a computer, just have every note be close to tempered but pull just a little for the chords that need to ring
You could say version 3 is what happens naturally, but that to me requires that you know how to tune and ring chords, and know which intervals to alter slightly to get it just right. But if you know what you’re doing, this is probably the best way to go about it at all times. Some new barbershop groups have a tendency to aim way too flat, probably because most of the time, tuning low is the thing that makes chord ring (thirds, 6ths, b7 and even major 7ths), but because these groups Force notes downwards to MAKE the ring, instead of naturally finding a balanced spot to LET the chord ring, these groups rens to sound flat sometimes, or even drop in pitch throughout the song.
Roman King reference 🥴
You bet!
I already have a few potential arrangements floating around my head but I don't really know how to get all these ideas out of my head and onto sheet music, following these steps will probably help quite a bit. I'm pretty sure I already heard you talk about this when we visited y'all in December (BYC Member here😝) but it's wonderful to have it available in full video form now, thank you!
Yeah, this is based on my talk back in november, but it’s much more in detail and with better examples!
I appreciate your hard (and professional) work!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
Can we get an annotated version?
Great video! I loved your theory videos over barbershop before this. Is there any possibility for you to do any arrangement coaching in the future (or do you know anywhere someone could go to get advice on specific arrangements)?
Thanks!!! I appreciate that! I could be open for helping out with some feedback 😊 I’m usually faily busy, but I’d be happy to help any way I can.
Not sure this really counts as theory but could you do one on vibrato? I sang in a pretty good vocal jazz group in college, we won a downbeat award one year, and our director absolutely refused to let us use vibrato unless it was in the lead part, just a little bit, and in solos. When I'm feeling snarky I feel vocalists started to sing with vibrato to deal with the even tempered piano and its all-encompassing dissonance. Very difficult to sing a grinding chord with vibrato and have it work. PS If you had somebody improvise in your quartet, you'd have a vocal jazz quartet :) lots of good music for that combination. PPS I have some scat singing videos on my channel. Awful production values but I can scat sing.
Hmm, I might do that but since it’s not much used in barbershop it might be a bit off topic though. The use of vibrato is both a matter of musical history and -culture, an expressive tool, but also a way for the voice to relax (especially when singing high and long notes). But in general in barbershop, the use of vibrato is very polarizing - some like it and some hate it.
Overtones are why God gave us just intonation :) I've yet to hear one come from a piano. Sometimes you can get a string to vibrate if you hold a key down, I'm not sure that counts. When I was still teaching the jazz ensemble I used to show them about chords and how they needed to be tuned by using the trombone section. I would get a couple of guys going on a perfect 5th and then let the girl if there is one :) put in the major 3rd and mess with it until you hear it in tune and the overtones
Overtoners are all around, but most people just don’t notice them. It’s so amazing to watch when people first experience a just intonated chord and hear an overtone for the first time!
I sang barbershop in high school but that was 50 years ago: I don't remember hearing about a barbershop 7th chord until about five minutes ago. If you have something called a barbershop 7th chord, can't it just be called a dominant 7th chord? If it's on the 5th degree of the scale I would say it's dominant and if it's on any other degree, it probably is a secondary dominant?
The reason the term “barbershop 7th” is used is because of the way we tune that chord compared to other musical generes and styles. So yes, you could just call it a dominant 7th 😊
Dude thank you for sharing this. You just gave me the tools I need to start arranging. This made sense!!!
You’re welcome!!! So thrilled to hear that!
Great video Søren! Many great tips and ideas. I've so many times started an arrangement with the aim of making it shop but ended up disappointed just because I wanted to spice it up too much. Your 5-step model will make it easier in the future I hope. Greetings from a northern neighbor! 💈
Thank you so much!!! So happy to hear that! 💈❤️
nah this is fire wym
Vocal jazz didn't die with the singer's unlimited and. Manhattan transfer It just went underground in barbershop :)
I'm a baritone. I like to sing the penultimate note as a D natural, rather than another D#... I have to sing it really loud, though :)
Aaaah cool! So the b9 of the chord? That sounds crunchy
@@BarbershopTagAlong I was thinking just a passing tone between the D sharp and a C# rather than 2 D#s and a C#? And I am a masochist, so I lean into that de-natural heavily as you say, it is so crunchy...😇
This is GOLD!
Thanks!!! Really appreciate it!
Hell yeah
Those last notes gave me goosebumps the same way THX did when I was a kid
Haha, you’re so right!
Is there anyway you could make this in an SSAA arrangement?
Awesome!
Taaaak!!
Very useful, thank you!
You’re very welcome!!
great video... thank you... loved it.. very instructive crystal clear
Thank you so much! Glad to hear that it was clear to follow!
It must have needed such a big amount of time and work to make this video ! And it really pays out, it's super clear with all the before/after samples (with human voices ! It's way more useful than with midi playback) My favorite part is the list of embellishments, I already know I'll come back to it regularly, as I do with your video listing the vocab chords. To answer your question about my arranging process : I'm also a fan of step 2 (notating the melody and original chords' symbols), but maybe not for the whole song. Maybe just 1 chorus and 1 verse. And I tend to skip steps 3 and 4 and do it all during step 5... and I agree that it's easy to get lost there :D so yeah, 1 2 5 for me Bravo, keep up the great work :)
Yeah, it tool around 30 hours or so to make 😄 Really happy you like the video! Skipping some steps is fine, if you have experience arranging. I have sometimes written the tag first and then work backwards, but it’s SO easy to get lost that way 😄
Can’t wait to watch this later
YES!
🫨🫨🤩🤩
Great video. I'm amazed at how your were able to produce such a video with all of the various clips you provided. It must have taken you many hours to complete this one. I agree with your approach.
Thank you so much Ron! It took around 30 work hours I think 😅
Jim Caviezel’s son does barbershop now?! Awesome🥳
Haha Thanks!
I’ve been waiting for this, can’t wait to make my own barbershop song now!
Let’s gooo!!!
Great video, will definitely be using this :)
Thanks!! Glad to hear it!
Absolutely perfect! My sixth step is polishing. Often the performers aid in this step. This is a “Must Watch” for anyone approaching barbershop arranging! Bravo!
Thank you so much Paul! So true, especially when working on commission pieces for groups!
Thank you for a great video! Coming from a classical composition background, the theory has never been any problem for me. I am however always getting stuck when it comes to the topic of form. How many verses should I use, intro or no intro, should I use a key change and where? Some insight on this in a future video would be great! Kind regards from Sweden!
Thank you so much!! Yeah, that can be a tricky part of arranging. For me, it comes down to the original song. If there isn’t enough “Spice” to work from, I tend to add a keychange, an intro or some other thing to make the arrangement more interesting. Cheers from Denmark 😄
Been waiting for this one for a while, a lot of good considerations and things that I haven't considered. In terms of the question at the end, I personally feel that it depends on the case whether or not you should put off all of the embellishments. Sometimes you think of a really cool idea early and put it in, which motivates you a lot, but it's also good to build a solid foundation and add some interest to it afterwards. It's probably pretty contextual, and depends on your situation (e.g. if you need to get an arrangement done quickly, it could be good to get the more foundational steps finished first rather than adding in an embellishment that may or may not fit well into the chart as a whole). It's a good question and I'll have to think more on it. Great video though! I've done a lot of research into barbershop theory online over the past few years, and I want you to know that your videos have been one of the best sources for theory knowledge that I've found on the internet, whether that be reinforce ideas that I've already heard, or reexplain stuff in a way that's a lot clearer to understand. I'm so happy that you've covered arranging, and thanks for all of the hard work that you've put into all of your videos so far. I'm usually not one to comment much, and I'm sure there are a lot of other people who haven't expressed their appreciation, but what you've done is doing so much for our weird little hobby :)
Thank you so much for your very kind comment ❤️ And I think you’re right about it be circumstantial: sometimes using the fun and wild ideas in the beginning can act like fuel on the bonfire, and the next day it keeps you stuck for hours! Again, thank you so much for you comment - really made my day❤️
I'm happy I was able to make you feel good :) I just thought of a question - in bar 2 when you add the Adim7, that obviously changes the melody. What factors do you consider when it is and isn't appropriate to change alter the melody? Of course, you decided to change the melody here, but how would you know when an idea would change the melody too much to be worth it?
Love this!
Thanks!!
One I've been waiting for!
Thanks dude!! Hope it was worth the wait 🤞🏻😄
@@BarbershopTagAlong nailed it bro
First comment, not that it matters.
It so matters! Really hope you enjoyed the video!!
I didn't really understand the "Tonal center drift". Why does it happen?
Well for one, a lot of quartets and choirs drop in pitch because of other reasons, but in barbershop it can also happen because we focus on ringing chords and intonation, which can result in tonal center drift. The biggest reason, how I see it, is this: Because the major 3rd and b7 in a barbershop 7th chord is tuned so low according to the harmonic series (-14 and -31 respectively), and because barbershop is FILLED with those types of chords - unless the group/choir has a really good sense of the tonal center, there’s a good chance they will drop in pitch after a while. I hope that makes sense! Make sure to watch episode 4 where I go in depth with this 😊
@@BarbershopTagAlong Oh that makes sense, thank you
Hey, I know this is a bit of an unrelated question to this video, but is there anyway I can get you to sing an original barbershop tune of mine? Its an original melody, and original harmonies, and I think you have the voice for it! I would be honoured if you did so, or at least made learning tracks for my quartet. I know how its supposed to sound, its just hard teaching them a new tune without a reference. Anyway, tell me how I can reach you, and perhaps we can talk about this in a more private setting!
Hey! Try sending me an e-mail at mail@detlefsenmusic.com (that’s my work e-mail)
Nice stuff, but a point of order...The bass clef is also know as the F clef and the two dots should be above and below the F line, not the D line.
True, in Europe it’s called F clef (F nøgle in danish), but I’m pretty sure Bass Cleff is the standard in english speaking countries. But yeah about the dots, that’s on me 😅
Get in on the fun, guys! Excited to be a member!
Thanks for the hype bro!!❤️
