got this Quantum Fireball ST 6.4GB recent-ish, only finally got it out of the bag yesterday. Works well, but accidentally damaged the drive trying to unstick it by knocking it on my thigh. seems to be NOS or was never used cause the bearings sound great.

Just opened the box after getting it early this year with plans to go into this machine once I got it all installed with faster parts, this is my 2nd copy of this exact drive model since my first one (that was allegedly NOS) ended up having a bad PCB (SCSI controller side went bad likely due to me accidentally ESDing the PCB), so I was pretty anxious to see if this one would work.

damn that sucks you accidentally banged a NOS drive too hard! i saw it on discord, and i think it seems to have no trouble, atleast for now, formatting and installing. please do a full video on it + MHDD scan results when you're done installing
I have two different IDE hard drives Maxtor 5T040H4 40GB and Maxtor 90871U2 8.4 GB. 40GB works with 36 bad sectors and 8.4GB works sooo good. Is your Maxtor working good?
Zero bad sectors, and has 101k on the timer, not sure if it’s hours or minutes since HDsentinel said it had 70 days worth of power on time.
drive is detecting by bios or not?
slow spin-up lol
Those Cheetah's sound lovely, especially the 10k.7. Seek tests on them always sound sooooo good. Now I think I need to join you with a MAW3300NC, you've pushed it onto my list!!
those fujistu drives are goddamn silent in comparison to pretty much every other SCSI drive in existance.
@@thegeforce6625 Yeah it's crazy right? Not sure if that was their intent but idk how they did it with similar performance..
Depressing. Get the funeral planned and coffin soon. That HDD model is being sold used on Amazon.
had this hard drive recorded, runs windows vista sp2 Ultimate. but i like the hard drive. its from a computer that runs with a beautiful i5 6th gen. and runs 6gb. the hard drive's capacity is 300GB and its a DB35.3 ST3300820AS. one of the latest hard drive in 2007.
Cool! I have the same one ST1181677LCV and it works fine, no bad sectors.
They’re neat drives aren’t they.
These things are unstoppable. Man, I miss HGST…
I remember seeing the "Drivezilla" version of this (I think it was a 250GB 8GB Model?) At Sams Club for sale way back in the day. I wanted one so bad, but I didn't have the cash, and my parents didnt want to buy it either. I remember all the hype back in the day for that drive, it was supposed to be super fast, lots of storage space and a 8MB Buffer. I also remember these drives from back in the day as well. Quite noisy once the bearings got wore out.
Sadly, this drive’s bad, it hangs near the end of init and it just quietly clicks, though does eventually come ready. Is completely unusable since track 0 is bad.
I have two old hard drives I have in a vertical external mount on my desk for mass storage. The one is a WD Caviar Black 750GB from 2010 and the other is a Caviar Red 3tb from 2013. I love how they sound
750GB isnt half bad for todays standards. probably use that as an external hard drive to store random stuff
Sounds like a geiger counter.
I miss Windows XP 😭 and i also miss this great sound of the hard drive i remember being a kid and my cousin showing me how to defrag the computer and i was so interested in it. I love tech
Atleast its working
Seagate is horrible.
@@Jim_Slip-hp5ed true, but after 2 months of use my external drive (seagate) failed just because it was holding on the usb cable. 20% was corrupted and over 1300$ of repair. on reddits many had corruptions with seagate
so is your comment
@@Jim_Slip-hp5ed ah heck no youtube didn't render my reply, it takes for them like 3 minutes and sometimes it won't even work
Vectra VL a 100MHZ Pentium! Wonder how long it would take to crunch a classic SETI work unit on that...
Pentium 2 450MHZ in this one! Has a Matrox Parahelia PCI-X in it too, very limited by the CPU though.
@@thegeforce6625 PCI-X wow i vaguely remember those slots. Parahelia I had 1 of those it was very respectable. Matrox still makes basic video cards today according to their site
How many power-on hours in SMART? I have a few 250GB Enterprise 7200RPM drives with a bit over 100K hours
Only about 1200
Nice Ultrastar.
I bought an old Western digital HDD back in 2014 and it had the same sound .. the thing is it's still working until now 😄 ..my friend use it daily

Chernobyl Harddrive
oooh yaaa
It's normal seeking sound for hard drive... which sounds a bit loud, because it resonates on the case.
Nah, this drive is just really loud. It’s mounted in a caddy thing that has rubber grommets that the drive sits in.
@@thegeforce6625 I think if you take the drive out and do the same reading while holding the drive in hand, the seeking noise will be much less.
@@aspinxjust did that, still loud as heck, not surprised at all since it’s an enterprise drive
Ah yes, the good old 7200.10s. After many failed attempts, I finally have my own working sample; and I bet it's just as loud a seeker as yours.
I "might" have ordered a lot of 4 of these before the video was even halfway done... it sounds great in the video, hopefully they sound as good in person.
Hahahahah glad to hear that! These are great drives, ive has the deskstar version of this since 2018 or so and it sounds pretty much identical, though this ultrastar may be somewhat louder still. (The Deskstar lives in a iMac G5 quite happily, if not running a bit hot like in this video) And yeah, they sound just as great in person as in the video.
Have they arrived yet? What condition are they in?
@@thegeforce6625 They showed up a few days after I ordered them. Out of the four, three worked fine (perfect condition, more or less) and one was dead (shipping damage), not worth sending back at this price so I disassembled the bad one for the magnets and disks.
Very cool man! Sounds great. 63k hours is a nice run, hopefully it'll go for quite a bit longer. 5 platters is always sweet regardless of the drive! I'll bet it runs nice and hot though?
Yeah definitely runs pretty hot in this machine that has very limited airflow, usually runs at about 50-60c. Might go and get some more for a raid array or something lol.
@@thegeforce6625 Ah just use a fan or maybe a peltier pad /j cause those do introduce humidity
That is quite loud. But then again its a enterprise drive. At first i was gonna say it sounds like the motor has issues but that's a seek noise i think?
Yeah, motor sounds fine, just really loud seeking.
do you have the DJSA-220 by any chance? could you record the sounds from that? that one i fondly remember the bearing noise it made
Sweet dude! Glad to see the DM 17 arrived in one piece. The other units are nice additions too! Hope they all keep on going for you, fingers crossed for no early failures!
Veryy good maxline II! I have 3 SCSI maxtor 8J073J0, they all work great.
Nice maxline II, it's not often you see those Nice find on the much rarer SATA version of the DiamondMax17! The raptor drives are always a nice find!
Only paid $25 + $10 postage for the DM17 too really happy with that. Permanent home is a phenom II X6 1090T machine, only has 1 bad sector if i remember correctly.
Surprised to see so many Maxtor drives haha. Hopefully they all work fine! Nice to hear the two MaXLine drives, and the wonderful DiamondMax 17! Was not expecting to see the two WD Raptors as I thought you had a few of those already : ))
I've had my 40GV do something similar except refuse to seek, that is very odd to see it behave that way and hopefully it keeps working fine. It does seem like either after sitting for a long time or being upside down the drive plays dead for a few moments. Neat to see you still have that one in operation : ))
My SSHD is not resurrecting by flipping and still click no matter what position. I created restore image that 77% filled, because it could not fill even a percent after a month of recovering 24/7.
yeah back that up man.
it's going to die soon "deathstars" have it in common
nothing on the drive, so no big loss if it dies.
I'd still recommend backing up any important data from it if you have any. I don't expect that drive to last much longer.
nothing important on the drive.
@@thegeforce6625 Alright, good.
replace HDD with SSD cuz it will be alot faster
Interesting - I have a similar one ruclips.net/video/eP4jksoXaho/видео.html
this new movie with THX is great!
maybe the lid sensor is failing
Yep it is, have no idea where it is though.
If you're using a HDD then it's likely failing. SSD is the way to go nowadays.
Not the HDD, display lid switch is broken, even does it in the BIOS.
That was before fluid dynamic bearings... I think Seagate used them first in 2002/2003
cheeto
Lemme guess, the top drive is a Maxtor Atlas, and the rest are Seagates except the bottom one? (which I see is another Atlas)
DRONES ATTACKING!
Sounds identical to my expert WD135BA. very similar drives
Probably the same drive but with very slight platter densities, maybe manufacturing tolerances or something. edit: yours is a 22GXP with 3 platters 6 heads, mine is a 34GXP with 2 platters 4 heads
