Fun fact! This song was originally supposed to be played on a barrel organ but at the premiere it broke so they had to use the orchestra instead
Such big holes and the belt crossing, what's the reason for that, just for rewinding?
The Holes are a normal size for a 20 note music roll format which are 3 mm holes and the paper width is 110 mm. This is the same format that has been adopted by Raffin, Hoffbauer, Stuber and others. The belt is on the outside of the organ, and it crosses due to the direction that the music rolls feeds. This organ is setup in the opposite most others and the roll is loaded in the center and the take-up spool to the outer wall. So the drive belt is crossed to facilitate this. The organ does not have a transmission for rewind, so in order to rewind the roll, you must remove the belt. This example is an early 20 Note Carl Frei Jr. organ, later instruments had some improvements such as a rewind transmission, and belt on the inside.

I’ve never seen one of these before, but boy do I want one now! I’d imagine they are pretty rare nowadays, but considering that music boxes which use the same paper programming system are still made and sold to this day, I’m sure SOMEONE has to be making these as well!

I have one in my automated musical collection but need to redo a bellow. Is the roller cob organ a Chataqua? One of my roller organs looks like this one!
Harold Draper of organetterepair.com would be a good one to have your instrument rebuilt by. The small cob roller organ has the label "Concert Roller Organ" The Chautauqua Roller Organ is the same instrument, just with a different stencil. instruments with the Chautauqua stencil were a premium available through The Larkin Soap Company. Both of those play the same six-inch 20 note cob.
Where on earth can one find one of these? Has anyone tried to make one recently?
They do show up on eBay every now and then, but finding one in playing condition is challenge. I would recommend reaching out to Harold Draper at organetterepair.com to see if he has any leads for one. Or if you find one, he would be the best option for having it restored. He does really nice work. Good Luck!

I never realised till the click at the end (when the barrel is reset to starting position) that it's being edged slightly to the right through each revolution with three complete revolutions to the song; (had to replay it to count). The pinning is even more complicated than at first glance and must have to be extremely precise! Thanks for sharing!

Hello, Thank you so much for the kind words!. I am cutting the card for the Autophone music. It has been a lot of fun learning that art. However, I did not arrangement the music for the Roller Organs. That music was arranged by Charles Moore, who sadly died in 2020.
