Roaring Camp Railroads 12/7/23 [4K]
On slower days at Roaring Camp, Plymouth #40 pulls the redwood forest diesel train with only two cars. Watch as it makes its way up the ladder track, and twists the summit of Bear Mountain.

On the 20th of October, the FC&W held its very last live steam up. There were a total of five live steam locomotives at the event, three of them being geared locomotives. After all were fired up, a triple-headed log train was pulled by all three geared locomotive types; Shay, Climax, & Heisler.

The Fern Creek & Western Railroad held its final open house last month. Over 500 people came to view the railroad one last time, before it’s all removed and put into storage for the foreseeable future. You can read the awesome backstory of this railroad at fcwgrr.com.

Niles Canyon Railway’s Clover Valley Lumber Company #4 pulled the day’s trains. McCloud River Railroad #1711, an ex-fire water car, was used as an auxiliary tender. #1711’s claim to fame is its appearance in the 1986 movie, Stand By Me.

I found Roaring Camp, by chance, in 1967. I rode behind the number 1 Dixiana Shay. That was the first Shay I had ever seen. In 1975 I rode behind the number 2 Tuolumne Heisler. Another first. I visited the shop and found the Dixiana undergoing some repairs and the number 3 Kahuku 0-4-2T also undergoing repairs. One of the rods had a blacksmith weld. The RC mechanics added a gusset piece with proper welds on the back side of that rod. I’d like to visit the RC& BT again, but I seem to be stuck in the Midwest. Thanks for the video.

Not too many. It was extremely hot.

During the summer, it’s used daily.

How loud is this trains whistle?
There were many small children around, so we weren’t allowed to blow it very loud. When it’s on the mainline, it can get as loud as 130 decibels.
But I mean like blowing the whistle in general. How loud is it?

The property sadly had to be sold. The railroad is now in storage. You can read up why on the Fern Creek & Western’s website, fcwgrr.com

Big Trees no 3 is giving looks so much like the trains on Disney’s Big Thunder Mountain RR. All it needs is “I.M. FEARLESS” written on the side 😂😁
I remember this locomotive when I was a kid I would visit it from time to time and oil what remaining parts it had on it with my grandfather. I’m glad it’s still around

Tell me again how do you know which engine your riding when you book a ticket?
For the steam trains, It’s impossible to know. If it says diesel train when booking, you’ll be riding #40.

Shay Locomotives are Cool. And the great thing is, these locomotives are in California, my home state.

For this year's lights train, they installed a horn and EMD steel bell on Open Car 502.

Do you know if the coast futura is gonna actually run regular service on the branch?
There hasn’t been any talk about the Coast Futura in a while, so I’m not really sure what’s planned. The branch is in a state of limbo.
