When the journey ended, he let her go because he knew it was the best thing for her. Frieren wasn't ready for her own feelings yet and Himmel's death only hurt her more deeply. If he pursued her, Himmel didn't want her to have to go back to the forest, where she was alone. The image of the chiming clock that the author placed between him and Frieren seemed to imply that, perhaps the only thing that could break their eternal love was time. Time for Frieren to learn about Himmel, for her to accept his eternal love for her. Time for him to wait for her to realize all his caring and loving actions, time for Frieren to realize Himmel's feelings. Time is like a crack, the more it passes, the greater the distance between the two people becomes, however, his every action, gesture, appearance and love are always hidden in Frieren's heart.
