Videos about the purchase of my Westerly Storm 33 and how, to begin with, there were more problems and breakages than one can stick at! Sailing from Scotland to Poole didn’t go to plan, and I ended up embarking on a rebuild of my Volvo Penta 2003 engine and a slightly unexpected semi-refit hundreds of miles away from home.

I enjoyed the video!... But your overly tolerant attitude is unbelievable. You should have named/shamed these cowboys and taken them through small claims court. Please consider that your tolerance might help the cowboys to injure the next client. You come across as one of the good guys, but in this scenario, one could make a case of you aiding and abetting the cowboys in their next 'criminal' act. Sorry this comment is so harsh but as long as crooks are successful they'll continue... How to measure compression? Through the nozzle?
I'm so impressed. What a tricky job. The head linings in the cabin of Zephyr IV are on thin plywood panels. I had to take some of them down to sort out some wiring and what a nightmare, all that sticky foam detritus. Mine's not too bad overall but there are bits that offend and I guess I might have to sort it out eventually. Well done to you both for the job and the video.. Best Wishes Dave
I was squirming in my seat as your engineer was describing all the problems with your engine as he showed the insides bit by bit. You were lucky to get as far as you did. I have the same engine, and touch wood, only had minor problems with it. You certainly had some serious bad luck to buy that one. Hopefully things will only get better now. Thanks for commenting, I consider myself somewhat lucky in fact. No learning is bad learning is bad learning despite the modest extra costs. And the engine purrs like a cat now l. They're pretty good engines so long as they're looked after in my experience. Happy sailing ⛵️ 💓

I did a workshop for the Westerly Club Nederland an will send everybody the shed also with a materiallistening on request.I did it in my Thyphoon.60 mtr. and 56 cans of contact adhesive spray!and i did it all with brushes.The materials came from the automotiv industrie in polland,quite inexpensive . I made a mistake in the passage stats at the end. Passage time was 23hrs 55 minutes. Not 11hrs 55 😂
I have a smaller boat with the same vinyl droop. I have removed much of the vinyl, prepared and painted the fibreglass with a water based paint. This will be left for a while whilst I decide what to do longer term. I must admit the cream paint looks pretty decent for now. For me, water based paints and adhesives are the way to go, being much safer and easier to work with. I am trialling Eco Thixofix from Alpha Ahesives and it sticks really well, as a contact adhesive. I have used and painted very flexible 3.8mm plywood sheet for one quarter berth panel as an alternative to vinyl, which has practical advantages for easy removal/later addition of insulation. You took on an epic challenge here and got a great result. Well done!

Hi, thanks for commenting. I recall we left on an ebb and arrived before low water because we made a better than expected passage. Newlyn was chosen because it's accessible. For non-sailors its a good question because tides do matter around UK waters (for the most part). For that passage I was not concerned because the tides bound to be against at some point anyhow and the winds were light so no wind over tide to factor in.

When We bought our yacht I thought I would always use professionals to carry out work for insurance purposes! I've discovered that it's much cheaper to do your own repairs and maintenance then you know its done right! What an awful feeling it is getting caught in adverse weather with the engine over heat alarm sounding when it's getting dark!

Thanks for commenting and I'm glad you found it good insight. No, I did not consider additional insulation layers. That would affect all the wooden trims and fitting them back in place. Plus, I'm not planning to go to the Arctic (yet).
Great video ! I bought a tired Westerly Sealord in Conwy and we sailed her back non stop to Portsmouth early December 22. Day sailing would have been far more sensible, no working autopilot + bits falling off on route 🤣⛵️
Funnily enough helped sail a Sealord back from Scotland in 2019 - we had to hand steer her too! If you saw my first few videos that's partly why I decided on day sailing. Thanks for the comment - I really appreciate them :-)

Small Claims court ? You don't need a solicitor, and judges are quite helpful in getting to the legal bottom of things. If you've been conned, the judge will rule accordingly.
Just found your channel, enjoyed your videos and admire your pragmatism. I know time has moved on but did you not consider lodging a small courts claim against the seller (the RYA instructor). Marine Power either deliberately bodged that engine or sub contracted it to another bodger- absolutely irresponsible deliberate wrecking.
Hi, thanks for commenting. Yes, I did prepare a strong legal case, made slightly more complicated because the boat was bought in Scotland and me from England. I chose to spend the money on the boat and am pleased with the outcome. In any case, anyone who sees the videos and knows the boat may well know the previous owner, who claimed to be an RYA Instructor, and his reputation will be justly judged accordingly.

Great video. Such a familiar sight to me! I haven't got all the skills you have, getting to grips with the sewing machine. But have used Hawke House themselves to make the trim pieces from the originals as patterns which has worked for me. Certainly not a job for the feint hearted...

I have just acquired a Sigma 36, which apparently is a popular UK boat. Owner had passed, boat had been sitting for 5yrs. I'm debugging engine problems, layered...ie find one, fix it, find the hidden problem under the first. If you don't mind me asking, how much did the engine rebuild cost parts & labor? Great video, thank you!
Hi Stephen, Thanks for commenting. Sure, the Sigma is a great class with loads of pedigree. It cost about the same as re-powering with a commercially reconditioned unit, maybe slightly more but for the piece of mind that the investment returns it no bad thing.
It always surprises me the amount of piss poor repairs that you can find on boats, including safety critical one's. I think it's a vicious circle, often owners are about as practical and hands on as a chocolate tea pot which then feeds into the fact that many marine "engineers" have oddly placed God complexes. Come on people it's hardly rocket science, I'm sure there's a way for everyone to meet in the middle and actually help each other out.

Rum rig, rum rig... Hmmm I recognise the RB Boatyard, and I was there until mid-october when I sailed to Belfast. Don't remember if I met you, but I remember also having had quite the troubles with the weather. I must say, the forecast was very inaccurate. And when in Kip I had a boat tied up behind me that had some issues with leaving, so I was sort of boxed in and had difficulties getting out. Either option is likely. My trip was very similar to yours, up to a point anyway. I went RB Marine - Kip - Largs - Troon - Loch Ryan and then across to NI, with a lot of bad weather, too and ended up being towed by a lifeboat as well, also due to an engine failure. I didn't get to film very much, but glad I can show people your videos now so they can see how bad it was :P -Dom (German sailor on Blubelle)

Seeing the water pipe Jubilee loose brought back some bad memories for me, first time I took my Hunter out into the Irish sea my mate noticed the bilge pumping water, when I looked in the cabin water was bellowing from the engine bay - the water pipe had blown off, had to lie in the water to reattach it - moral of the story, always double clip your water pipes
Or as i did, pay a volvo penta engineer over a £1000 to check the whole installation because the previous owner proved that he shouldnt have been in charge of a rubber duck in the bath let alone a yacht! Moral of the story is don't trust anyone else.
@@SM40 My boat has a history of trying to kill me 😀 first time I took it from troon to Bangor, no issues on the sails, turned the engine on, went to dock, put it in reverse and the prop shaft blew out of the seal.... fun times lol - apart from that though its been fine

Many thanks 👍The trick is not to spit the pin too much I have worked out. The bolt that was loose is for the mechanism so was a bit of a red herring.
What a story! Great videos. We bought our Storm in Dez 2020 also from MS&P in Rhu, she was on the dry with RB Marine. First sail to Kip Marine in Mai 21 and then towards Troon. But thats were the similarities end ;-). Looking at all your problems we seem to have been very luck so far. Wish you happy sailing - Storms are great boats.
I remember, I saw her I think nearer the main entrance than Runrig. Not sure she was on the market at that point. MS&P never mentioned her - though that wouldnt surprise me even if she were on the market! Glad to hear that your experience has been positive, they really are superb yachts to sail :-)
You mentioned the big problem of overheating and the smoke incident. Did you ever find out the exact cause of the issue? Anything to do with the heat exchanger or was it juts the blockages due to the silicone gasket issue? Or was it the electrics? Would love to know the exact cause as I also have a Volvo Penta 2003 which has in the past given me some problems of overheating. Great videos - thank you.
With the suspected overheating we concluded it was a faulty alarm. Later, I found faulty wiring for the water temperature and so that proved to be a reasonable judgement. The smoke, it was oily smoke, and I am 99.8% certain that was due to leaked oil in contact with a hot engine and we were beating into a F6 down the Irish which was quite bumpy. The crank case did have some smoke but nothing very alarming, more synonymous with worn piston seals/cylinders, which proved to be the case. It is, however, possible that we did also overheat due to the leaky engine block drain that was later identified when the engine was dismantled. All in all, that engine in the state that Motive Marine (Peter Burgess) sold it in, it was always going to fail. It was a dud! Thanks for enjoying the video; I thought it would be good to share with the wider community.

What an absolute saga. How you managed to keep so calm when describing the attitude of the the engine's supplier (not to mention the other cowboys) is completely beyond me. You must have the patience of a saint. All the best from here on in!

Further to my comments in your Part 2, I find the level of incompetence, negligence and deceit that you've encountered to be absolutely staggering. You have been wronged for monetary gain and there should be inexpensive means available to you for full recompense. I hesitate to mention the loose raw water intake hose which, as you mention, could have been catastrophic. Credit to you for having such a stiff upper lip but I would still be considering every opportunity to discredit all parties who contributed to your pain otherwise they will continue to rip others off in similar fashion.
Thanks for commenting and like you was both shocked and relieved at the same time. What I didn't film was the main fuel pipe that had been left sitting on top of the shaft coupling, that was day one of ownership. The engineer at Kip spotted it and replaced the whole pipe that had 50% worn through. I'd only done 9nm! Installation by an RYA Instructor! I don't regard my role in this as being one which needs to shame them - they did that all by themselves. The videos are enough - they know who they are!

Thanks for commenting. The engine installation was still being completed at launch and pre-dated the survey so written assurances were written into the sale in light of the fresh engine installation. Since the issues were contractual discrepancies (i.e. the seller and the broker made false representations and failed to honour their word). In that regard I also retained a complete audit trail for evidential purposes to support this, which turned out to be more important than the survey (i.e. the survey was of no value to the complaint).

Oh dear! Having much better luck now after the rebuild. Sorry to hear that you're not a fan of them. I've had years of experience with the 2003 and have always found them to be good and reliable (except when ruuning out of diesel ;-) which i did once and then had to sail into a marina berth! ) They are an aging model now, so parts are that much more difficult to obtain.
@@SM40 I have had a VP 2002 with 3000+ running hours. I have faced one problem with this engine: it will not start. This could be solved by closing the decompression valves 🤭
It's not clear from your videos where you actually bought the boat or what company supposedly reconditioned the engine. I know if it was me got ripped off like that I would certainly be naming and shaming the engineering company to help prevent possible future unsuspecting customers getting ripped off. No difference in naming and shaming than reviewing products on websites etc. Can you at least tell us where the company is situated. Nice boat.

Motive Marine of Southampton. I can't blame MS&P entirely, they blamed the owner for the misdescription, and Motive Marine gave me a copy of the invoice which doesnt say its been "fully reconditioned". I did insist on sea testing and remediation arising from the installation. MS&P suggested this could be done via video, to save me a trip. The owner sent me a video that RB Marine provided saying that everything was okay. So I should have done the extra trip really, but everything is easy with hindsight! Like I say, I'm not bitter at all. The sailing has been amazing, and Scotland was fantastic, met some really lovely people and made great memories.

No, it wasnt Arthur Daly, but it was a member of the Royal Gourock Yacht Club who told me three trimes in the same sentence that he was an RYA instructor haha. As you say, it could have been worse and to be honest I've gained a huge amount of knowledge in the process :-) Thanks for commenting. ATB.

I've done an article for the Westerly Owners' Association magazine on my experience this year of stripping my Westerly Storm's hull and then copper coating it. If they use it, it should be out in the spring. No video I am afraid, I can't scrape, sand and video at the same time. But I do have lots of photos!
By this stage I had paid not an inconsiderable amount for the engine installation to be checked professionally, which is why some of the basic shortcomings were such a surprise. A lesson learned! If something needs doing...
Taking a tow at 10 knots is probobly the most dangerouse part of youre journey .
It definately was! Apart from the video clip we took turns on a hand on the tiller; I was very concerned about what would have happened if the autohelm would have knocked off. Skipper later told me they only went that fast because it was a westerly (known for being well built) and they'd seen the towing line braced between the anchor winch and both bow cleats. I am never surprised to hear of boats with RECONDITIONED engines breaking down before the new owner gets out of the harbour. It seems that there are very few honest sailor's left . I hope the crook who sold you this boat has lots of BAD KARMA.
Part 3 on monday looks at what reconditioning really means. And as for the guy that sold me the boat, three times in the same sentence he told me he was an RYA Instructor - would you believe it? #karma
