My Rollerball and Ballpoint Pen Collection (December 2022)

Comparing my rollerball and ballpoint collection to their fountain pen counterparts. I would like to add, since I completely forgot to mention it in the video, that the Ohto refill I use in the Lamy 2000 rollerball pen is a tad short, so you need to stuff a tiny bit of paper inside the blind cap to fill the small amount of extra space.

This video has been a great comparison between the Franklin-Cbristoph pens/nibs. Most of the ones RUclips recommends to me are like 8+ years old and recorded with an iPhone 3GS. You also don't sound like a librarian at .25x playback, and have a very colorful voice. Anyway, I think that Marietta 20 (especially in either Vintage Green or Diamondcast Green) is an awesome design and will be my next FC to pair with my 02 Intrinsic in Emerald. I look forward to watching more of your videos should you find the time to keep making them.
Pelikorn? PELIKORN?
I love that cover - apparently, it’s the same fabric they use for kimonos and obis. You have a very elegant esthetic.
I enjoyed seeing your Oberon Designs collection! I have several of their hair barrettes from when my hair was long and thick. Chemo ruined that, but it's slowly growing again so I will be able to enjoy my Oberon Designs barrettes again one day. I've been watching Hobonichi haul videos, and you popped up. I loved your journal collection. I hope you do more videos.
They have lovely barrettes. I used to own a few of their hair items, but I'm really lazy with styling my hair so never really made use of them. I think I will end up doing a journal cover video at some point. I always like watching those videos myself, anyway.
Yours is only the second video I’ve seen/found with that beautiful Yuge Fabric Farm Cover. I bought it and love it!
Yeah I haven't seen many who ended up getting the Yuge cover. That was part of the reason I wanted to make a video was to show it so others might see and be able to make a decision.
Congrats on nursing school!🎉
Thanks so much!!! I'm nervous but excited.
Seeing how you find the pen disgusting if you wanna get rid of it, let me know, orange is my favorite color so I find the pen to be gorgeous
2:54 I missed that opportunity to buy the cover! But I did buy myself the pencil board last year.
It’s so great to see you again!! I hope all is well! I still havent made my order yet. I keep taking items in an out of my cart. Lol.
Thank you!! Everything is going very well! I do wish I had waited before placing my order instead of ordering from a few different places. Would have saved me a lot of money. Definitely take your time before committing!
Do you still use your Oberon Leather journal covers? I'm wondering if you got any new ones since the last video. Currently eyeing the Cat in Window but can't decide on the color or ordering it custom in Fern (seems risky esp. since I'm in Europe). Your comparison video was very useful. I hope a hobonichi A5 notebook will fit. Lovely haul!
I do! I have three that I rotate between, amongst my other non-Oberon covers. I've bought quite a few Oberons over the years, but ended up selling them all to just keep my current three: Da Vinci in chocolate (which I modded to have a closure band), Thistle in chocolate, and a Unicorn Icon journal cover in black/brown. I also own a small portfolio in the Thistle design in chocolate. I have owned quite a few Cat in Window covers, in black, purple, and brown, as well as a portfolio, but I ended up selling them because I just didn't use them as much as my other covers. It's a gorgeous cover, though. I think it would look quite pretty in their fern color. I'm not sure how it would work since you're in Europe if there was a problem, but Oberon Design has excellent customer service when I've needed it. I can tell you that a Hobonichi A5 notebook does fit their covers! A Cousin would fit great, one of their thinner A5 notebooks would fit of course but would be a bit looser. You know, maybe I will make a video of all my journal covers.
@@inkfade4281 Thank you for all the wonderful information. I'm quite surprised you ended up getting rid of your brown Cat in Window, as you were raving about it in your last video! I wouldn't have expected it. I envy you on having so many different Oberons and being able to switch it up like that. Sadly, when I went to check out, I saw that the shipping was 50 bucks for one and 60 bucks for two, which is very high. It would amount to around 270 bucks total for just two covers when all the import costs are added on top. So I will have to give up on owning them, sadly. I don't understand why shipping to NL is so high.
@@Raneshep Yeah, I was sad to see it go but over the past year or so I've really decluttered my stationery. I didn't want fifteen notebook covers lying around when I only use a handful of them. While I love the Cat in Window design, for some reason I just didn't reach for it as much as my others. Wow, that's insane shipping. I'm so sorry. There's actually a lot of Oberon Design products on eBay, maybe you might find something there with less crazy shipping.
@@inkfade4281 Yeah, I actually went hunting for some on eBay but sadly the sellers that have the ones I like refuse to ship outside of the US. It's rough, I've emailed Oberon to inquire if there's a cheaper way to ship even though I know it's probably futile. For some reason, this super bummed me out lol. But I genuinely can't find any good-looking alternatives to Oberon, which is kind of strange, you would think there would be a bigger market for embossed leather covers out there.
@@Raneshep If you haven't already, join the Oberon Design Facebook page, it's called "ODO FRIENDS." I know people post journal covers to sell there and know some are willing to ship internationally. Perhaps you'll be lucky there.
Will you consider selling the clear pencil board. Great video
I think I will hold onto it for now, I have a feeling if I sold it I would find a use for it shortly after lol.
I have 2 black Lamy 2000 pens. One has an F nib and the other has an OM nib. Both write very nicely, OM very buttery and with variable thickness of the curved lines, while the F nib gives a firmer response to contact with the paper and leaves a thinner patina of ink. Because they are of the same color, I don't know which one I take out of the case first, but I write with great pleasure, then I take out the other one and continue my work. I like the writing differences between the two pens so much that I take a white sheet of paper and write all kinds of nonsense just for the pleasure of seeing the two differences. If you ask me, I can't choose between the two... I also have a Lamy rollbar that competes with them, but this is usually for everyday use where I can afford to be more careless with things
You should try J. Herbin Lie de Thé if you haven’t already. It’s a lovely ink.
Love your handwriting!
Re favorite blacks: my absolute favorite black for appearance/darkness, behavior, and especially smoothness of writing is Sailor Black, a Japanese ink that is not waterproof. My favorite waterproof, lightfast black ink is Platinum Carbon Black, another Japanese black. For a deep gray, I recommend Noodler’s Lexington Gray, which is absolutely waterproof, lightfast and also very well-behaved. As with all Noodler’s inks, watch out when you first open a new bottle; he fills them to the very top. If you want my recommendations for more ink colors I especially enjoy, let me know. Your big varied swatches really show the range of the inks much better than the usual narrow stripe. The one for Melon Tea looks mossy and organic. Thanks for sharing this series; I look forward to watching them all.
Hello, excellent review on your Galen Leather haul. Regarding the flap pen case issue, I’d recommend either getting their zippered version (although there may be height restrictions when it comes to 149-Meisterstuck Montblanc or the Pilot Custom Urushi pen). Another alternative company for flap pen pouches: • Aegean Leather The above brand is rather pricy compared to Galen Leather pouches, but they do offer a variety of sizes (their larger and taller pouches - can carry the Namiki Emperor and Pilot Custom Urushi pens), and their normal default pouches can carry the 149-Meisterstuck fountain pen. You could consider it if you have the budget!
Fine nib !! No doubt.
I too like De Atramentis Inks but find some hard to control. I finally put a Goulet EF nib in my Narwal Nautilus and it is a beautiful ink but still writes like a fine or even a medium-fine. Heather Vito is another of they inks that I enjoy, but have to choose pen, nib and paper carefully. Thanks for a great video.
That houndstooth will go perfectly with my pilot metro, but these cases dont seem to be available anymore. 😢
hi, great video! is the label in the case made of leather?
I have a parker 51 fountain pen and i sell it
Thank you for this helpful comparison video! I’ll opt for the medium.
How did you know it was from 1949? I got one recently and wanted to know if there was a place I could look.
There is a website called Parker "51" and it has some very helpful information under the "education" menu tab. Especially useful is the "51" Chronology page. The "51" History page is also interesting and may help you date your pen.
Love the last one ❤
Did you read on the website where they tell you not to post?
My steel sport is my favorite fountain pen, even more than pens that cost 3 times as much. Best investment I have made in a long time
Do you also own the Brass Kaweco Sport please?
@@greekveteran2715 i own the plastic and aluminum ones. The aluminum one with a clip sits on my desk at home, the steel travels with me, and the plastic gets beat up at work
The lip smacking kills me lol. Great review
Oh geez, between the scent of the leather off my phone, you are now known as my "pusher" lol. As the post card art is euphoric 🥰 and now am at their site. Lovely collection, I'll definitely follow, great video
The inside is the type of Hyde. It’s a softer more flexible leather.
The 2000 Fine nib seems like the perfect fit for my tastes, since I prefer Japanese Mediums (0.45-0.5) and Fine Mediums (0.35-0.4mm).
Thanks for showing how the houndstooth fabric up close. Just what I was looking for.
Thank you for sharing and providing a writing test near the end of the video.
Do you like rollerball or ballpoint better to write with for daily stuff?
I love franklin-christoph pens to the max! I'm addicted. If you ever want to sell the ones you aren't using, I'm your gal!
Kaweco is a great pen but they seriously need a larger capacity converter.......
I have the same pouch in mustard. Fell in love when I saw it, but since I haven't been traveling, haven't used it. If memory serves, its designed for a standard size regular TN. Mine fits perfectly and its on the chunky side. Quality is beyond reproach.
3 years later I had the same issue, then I fell on your video. Thank you! I actually purchase one fine from Big Pen and they are kind enough to swap it for me. Great service, I love Big Pen in Sweden. Of course the 2000 are not 130$ anymore...
Actually, I’m about to pull the trigger on a medium nibbed Lamy 2000 for 139 on Amazon. It was 138 a few days ago.
@@audacious6312 $127 yesterday! I got fine for $125 though. I want medium so I got fine hoping my nib will be on the broader side. Fingers crossed
Thank you for the video. I'm on the fence of getting a Lamy 2000. I own a Lamy Safari & CP1 for 10+ years, and I always thought they produce thicker line till I learned from other review, the vertical angle makes great difference. I wonder if it's the can case for Lamy 2000. I plan to get an EF Lamy 2000, since I prefer to write small, it would be wonderful if you could help varify the difference. Thank you.
On what planet is that a FINE nib?
We really need an update on your no/less buy journey.
Really lovely pen I must say. Is that D1 a rollerball refill? The ink looks like a water based ink, almost fountain pen like. Do these Sailor ball pens come in different sizes like the fountain pens? I am really impressed with the size and the way it writes .. of course you have perfect handwriting which makes it look even better! I have a couple of Cross Peerless 125 ball pens and they are lovely too with the same type of refill mechanism but easier to find I guess. Cheers, lovely video.
What’s up with that upper case d?
I prefer the medium and your video was super helpful in helping me buy my first Sailor.
Dieses daurnde aus- und wieder wegpacken von stiften ist furchtbar….
The reason I still can't decide on buying either the macchiato or brass is because of the silver finial and steel nib. I prefer gold than silver. Funny how a little variation in color makes a huge difference as a deciding factor in using these pens.
Im having the same problem, LOL I love the mint colour but it really irks me that its in silver and not gold which is what I prefer. You are not alone. 🙂
Lamy Safari y Pilot son mejores opciones que Midori.
Thank you, yes very helpful. Just ordered a 3776 with the Course nib. It will be absolutely perfect for my writing pleasure.
Just wondering. What would the color look like on cheaper paper? In general does look more like a mauve or plum color or more brown with some hints of purple? It looks it can go either way from your footage so I wanted to know your opinion
I just bought this pen, in black/gold, and it’s a different pen even though they look the same. It weighs about 26 grams. The pen unscrews rather than pulling apart and it uses 18-0500 refills not d1. I guess they updated the design. Mine has the new logo.
Question? Is the cap flimsy? Ordered one and the cap is thin and flimsy, or just very thin.
