Rip saw vs bow saw vs ryoba in thick maple
Really just seeing for myself which of these styles of saw I’m more successful with in thick hardwood. My technique with the big bow saw could really use some work!
Rip saw was the fastest for me, but the best cut quality was with the ryoba.

How to Wrap a Metal Plane Handle

Wrapping a metal plane handle can make the plane a lot more comfortable and enjoyable to use. In this video I show how I wrap and shellac the handle of a Stanley no. 50 combination plane. This technique works just as well on other Stanley, Record, etc. models, such as the no. 78.

Dutch Tool Chest Tour

Take a tour of my Dutch tool chest. It's a great design that can store a full set of essential hand tools, and can still be moved around. Examples of this design are in Jim Tolpin's the Tool Box Book and Chris Schwarz (Lost Art Press) teaches how to build one in a video available from Lie-Nielsen Toolworks (lie-nielsen.com).

    I really like your simple demonstration of this work bench. I was wondering just how long it actually does take to unload and assemble? I am curious because , if I was to go to weekend "fairs" and wanted to go and do some work, I would like to assemble quickly and disassemble quickly. I do realize that as time goes by, it would be less and less time. and how would one contain all those parts so that they could be reached for without even thinking about it. I think that if I could build a bench like that, I would want to show it off! lol.

    The toolbox book is a great book. I bought it decades ago included with the companion workbench & workshop trio set from Taunton Press book club. All 3 are pretty easy to find as they have been redone over the years. I always liked the dutch toolchest although I haven't made one.

    I built this in '21 an really like it, it's heavy enough to stay put, has an Ash top an bits of Oak and Walnut connecting SYP legs and stretchers. The Ash top is only 12" wide x 3.5"thick to save on weight giving me a bigger tool tray, the Vise chop is Oak with a Maple screw. Yes, I followed W. Myers plan on this. I can disassemble, and take it anywhere!

      Thank you for this comment. Yesterday morning, I spent some time working on the blade. I hammered all the set out and reset the teeth for a very small kerf. While I was at it I sharpened the teeth and lightly stoned the sides. Cuts MUCH faster now and doesn’t wander like I did in the video. Thanks again for the helpful comment!

    Ryoba for sure but you did deviate a lot with the other saws . And I did see many old folks cutting straight with the frame saws.

    • @macaustin2791
      @macaustin2791 2 года назад

      Yeah, I really struggled with the frame saw. I use my 600mm frame saw quite a lot and haven’t had that problem, but I’m not usually cutting through something as hard as maple or nearly that thick. Not sure what it was but my technique was pretty bad there. Maybe it was the feeling of needing to lay into it to much and not just letting the saw do the work.

    Well done. Another internet "wisdom" bites the dust. I use Arkansas stones up to a hard Arkansas 3" x 12", which I bought from Dan's Whetstones in Arkansas. It seems a bit slower than you demo, perhaps 20 strokes, but it is no problem at all on A2. I like sharpening however. I think that those who hate it, have created an overblown hysteria, perhaps? I find that for my woodworking tools, hard is all I need. Sometimes I go further and finish on my Rozsutec, which is one grade finer and it too works ok on A2, but I don't' find merit in any sort of mirror polish for chisels and plane blades - maybe if I were slicing sashimi all day, it might be a different story. I should mention that it took me two other stone bought from questionable sources (Amazon and "best sharpening supplies) before I leaned my lesson. These stones are NOT the same. They are garbage, sold for a high price, but one lower than a reputable source such as Dan's, and sharpening with them is futility itself. Lastly, I wanted to mention that I use windex on my natural Arkansas and the Rozsutec stone, both. Not oil, which seems to bog the process down tremendously. Thanks for putting up this test.
