Mike and his Vigier Ultra meets the Laney TI15-112 combo
Mike stopped by to try out the Laney TI15-112 combo with his Vigier Ultra.
The combo is a 100VAC version, so it is running on my Variac set for that AC voltage.
Checked the EL84 output tubes have drifted from original matching. Next time the TI15-112 will have a new matched pair of JJ EL84 output tubes installed and amp rebiased to factory setting.

      In the original amps the pedal is based upon, for the Laney Supergroup MKI, the C2=C5=250pf and for the SUNN Model T C2=C5=270pF, not 220pF. The PI cap for the Supergroup MKI C13=47pf and for the Model T C13=270pf. Also for the Supergroup MKI mode both channels would have C3/R6 installed. As is. the gain of the Treble channel does not match the Bass channel. This is based off my Laney Supergroup MKI I have and repaired and an original SUNN Model T schematic. These may have been decisions of the pedal designer, but not per the original designs.

    • @HollisAudioLabs
      @HollisAudioLabs 9 месяцев назад

      One more is that for the original SUNN Model T, the input stage shares one R3/C6 at the cathodes (FET sources). This modulates the input when both sides are used together as they share the output current into the R-C bias network and bypass cap.

    • @HollisAudioLabs
      @HollisAudioLabs 10 месяцев назад

      The 66 SG Special P90's are very similar to the original '64 SG Special sound. Think first Black Sabbath LP. The Monkey SG copy has JayDee Custom Guitars Old Boy v4 pickups installed. These are the same as used in the CSI video of End Of The Beginning. Much higher gain than the original P90's and humbucker style, so less noise pickup. I have no idea of what Gibson put into the Monkey copies in the P90's. They are not the original John Birch size 6 pole and 9 pole pickups in Monkey and a different size. I have a JayDee Custom Guitars SG Special with the original 6 pole style pickups installed and sounds like the original. Not as much output as the Old Boy pickups.

    • @HollisAudioLabs
      @HollisAudioLabs Год назад

      The Beta 402 is 33in x 25in. They only sound thin if you are running to much treble. Adding the Beta 205 gives it a very well defined bottom for down tuning. The SUNN Fender Era model 412 cab maybe better, but more expensive and not really what I wanted.

  • @phildemetro
    @phildemetro Год назад

    I like this video and this channel, Richard. Because of the tuning and low output pickups Tony was always trying to get brightness and articulation. Around '73 or '74 he was likely using JBL D-120F's instead of Goodman's or Fanes or even Celestions that came stock in the Laney cabs. If you can find them you could even try the Laney-spec Celestion T-1976's that had similar brightness, headroom and were were even more aggressive than the JBL. He would have used these right up until the end of the Ozzy era. Then it was KT-88 Marshalls and high wattage Celestions for H&H until 6L6 based 300W Boogie Coliseums entered the picture for Mob Rules. An all-maple Birch guitar would help articulation even further.

    • @HollisAudioLabs
      @HollisAudioLabs Год назад

      I have a John Birch J1 with a JB Biflux neck and JB Magnum bridge pickups. It is very bright in comparison to the Mahogany SG. It weighs a ton! I know Tony's J1 had his interchangable pickup system, so never seen the pickups in use, but the John Birch SG had the Magnum X bridge I have on my Epiphone SG Goth. Have seen both a JB Magnum and Hyperflux in the bridge position of the JB SG. Lots of changes over the years. I have a more modern JBL K120 in a Laney 1x12 that is from the '70s, where the D120F was late '60s and Fender favorites. There is a video of it on the channel.

    • @phildemetro
      @phildemetro Год назад

      @@HollisAudioLabs Wow - I woiuld love to try an original J-1. I am convinced the J-1 was the guitar used to record Sabotage while the more famous JB SG was being finalized. There is a great Sabbath gig in 1975 in San Antonio where Iommi used the J-1 on the Children of the Grave encore. The sound is really loud and bright compared to the rest of the set. Totally different to the Monkey. It's interesting to hear. There is even supporting visual evidence of Iommi using that guitar on that date. A Google search brings it up eventually. I know a Fender Twin was used on the SBS album and that probably also had the JBL's in it. John "Dawk" Stillwell (r.i.p) confirmed on his old website that the Laney cabs he inspected in Sabbath's lockup in 1979 had orange frame D120F's. Everything mid '75 to 1978 had a very bright, focused tone. Keep up the great work, Richard!

Also, a JayDee double coil humbucker based on the Birch maple cross guitar in a black 2022 SG Special with a Schaller fine tuner bridge. The new Gibson's are built fine but the wood isn't quite right. It's not dried out fully. For that sound I'll go Into a '73 Klipp with matching 4x12 Laney cab with a quad of Goodmans or JBL D-120f's or even T1976's. I have the early Sabbath tone on deck. The Laney is critical for that

      @@phildemetro When I have another demo day at our local theater in MD, I will bring the JB J1 guitar as I had a request. I will see if I can locate a Fender Twin with JBL D120F's speakers as others have asked about the SBS sound. Have seen a picture of Tony in a studio with two 1x12's loaded with what could be either JBL D120F or Goodmans 12-PG speakers as they have the 4in metal dust cap. Could not see the cone well enough to see if it is smooth or ribbed. Probably the D120F's with the SBS info.

      The Goodmans Silver Label 20W is probably from the Beatles VOX amps. The Goodmans small green label 25W 15 Ohm speakers are the early Tony sound. The Goodmans small red label 12P 50W 15 Ohm speakers are the next closest.

      Also the Goodmans small green label 25 watt 15 Ohm speakers for Tony's tone have 2016 cone numbers printed on them in white. They date from '69-'71 for production.

      @@HAL2001 I believe in this day and age, even most budget guitars are a 100 times better than when i started playing back in the 90s. As for setup, even the Epiphones I have bought always needed setup. Its a great deal for a P90 equipped guitar, even though most budget P90s are fairly weak. You can upgrade them if needed. I will look into these Fireflies and see if i can try one out.

    Boost! I barely heard that, so it was great reference to Loud. I can gather from the recording that it must feel good too! I am interested in finding a 15" to replace or repair the cone in a Roland 150w Keyboard mixer amp with a horn as well. The horn works fine but the paper of the original 15 has served its days. I do still have old carpet carvin pa set though! 15" and horn, bi amp trs setup. Fun stuff. I need to be loud too!

    • @HollisAudioLabs
      @HollisAudioLabs Год назад

      Larry, It is really not that loud. I kept it low to make sure the speaker was in good shape. It sounds huge due to the frequency range. I need to try it with my bass to see what it will do, but need to cover the old tweeter hole first to get the rear port working correctly. Have a replacement tweeter coming. There are a few good places that repair old speakers if you want to keep it close to original depending on the 15in speaker mfg. Orange County Speakers is on the west coast as a possible repair place. There are a few on the east coast, but shipping would be high.
