    How did the Leyland fair on the Destination Doha film? why did the narrator say right hand drive I wonder. Cyril was that actor from that comedy series Doctor in The House.

    Classic UK shed engineering and they were good at it, but the Scandinavian and German manufacturers were not lashing up other people components they were doing the lot and that includes the servicing and financing and of course they had European wide service networks. If you were venturing outside the UK, you were not going to get anything like their support from ERF. As the market moved to where the profits are in finance and servicing rather than selling the metal, the UK manufacturers were doomed, ERF selling out to MAN and that was principally as ERF with their relatively light glassfibre cab had come to dominate the weight UK fuel tanker fleets and MAN wanted to flip those fleets to them.

    • @martinwebb1681
      @martinwebb1681 3 месяца назад

      ERF didn't sell out to man, ERF was bought by Canadian manufacturer Western Star in 1996, it was they who sold ERF to Man in 2000.

    Nuts to the coca cola, I just want the D series. We had a mixed fleet of D series and early Cargoes when I started work after leaving school in 84. I always preferred the D series over the cargo as its just so much better looking.

      THAT because you never got to drive Gargo with humming cummings ,just let down by Fords rubbish brakes my DAD replaced a ford trader for one of the first D series 1965/6 ,far superior than the Trader but loved the trader

      @@robertsmith9810 oh yes we did have the Cummins actually, as well as a few transconti's, remember them? I just preferred the D series as they were a better looking truck. Still rotted like hell for the fun of it but so did everything else in the 60's/70''s/80's, as unfortunately the Cargo rotted as well, as ford still hadn't learnt anything.

    What was the year of this short? I'm guessing 1977 as the AEC Southall plant is already displaying British Leyland signage. The dash looks more modern than the steering wheel. It's like a mixed bag of eras that truck.

    Watching this just sends my brain into a time warp. My biggest problem I had as a kid in the mid 70's was do I go into the toy store with my Mum so she can buy me a toy truck or do I stand outside and watch trucks climbing the hill outside. I remember seeing many of these.

    My father ran ford trucks for 30 yrs the last one was a D series wich was far superior to the trader it replaced but the engines wanted an compleat over hall at 100 thousand miles specially the ford turbo models, strange to see spare wheels as not many modern trucks carry a spare nowadays , if i remember correctly you wound them up and secured them with two nuts

    The British truck manufacturers have had many great successes, and the Leyland Marathon was just one of them. How the hell have we been allowed to get to the state whereby we no longer produce trucks of any note? Once again, I'm afraid, it points to massive mis-management, an all too common British trait!
