My dad graduated from Kemper in the late 1960's, I think 1968, maybe? His name was Steve Christian and his best friends at Kemper were Ralph and Ronnie Jett, and Mark Livesey, all of Oklahoma City. His favorite teacher was a major or colonel Smith? (I think) Dad won the H.C. Johnson award for athletics while he was there, and that award ended up being the accomplishment he was most proud of even though he had a very accomplished career. Kemper may be gone, but the men it made have improved our country in ways that will last forever.
@@DanielOchsenschlagerreally? That is really amazing. Dad used to talk about a cadet who was from the royal family of Thailand. Do you remember him? He had a strange name, and dad said he was the King of Thailand’s son? Do you remember any of that!
I attended KMS & College as an MS III and MS IV College Cadet in the Two year Commissioning Program from January 1978-June 1979. I had the ambition to become an Army Officer back then like many of my classmates. Learning how to become one while attending KMS&C was the right place to be. The SROTC cadre were professional and knew there jobs. I did 1 1/2 years at Kemper and in September 1979 decided I would enlist to become an Infantryman, Paratrooper, Ranger, Operations NCO, Instructor and first line supervisor in Airborne and Light Infantry units. I served in Italy, Germany, Turkey, Alaska and many stateside assignments. I was involved in the 'Urgent Fury" operation in Grenada in 1983 with the 82nd Airborne. I thought I would gain experience from the enlisted levels and perhaps go to OCS or SROTC in the future. I did over twenty years enlisted and finished up as a Senior NCO. The Kemper experience during my time there prepared me for the Army in so many ways. I last visited KMS&C in early May 2019. I spent a few hours walking the grounds, looking in the windows and doors and reminiscing about those long ago days i.e. forty years past in 2019. It seemed just like yesterday remembering all the cadets, cadre and staff at KMS. Through the years I had kept up with Kemper and when I read in 2002 that the school had closed due to bad management and it had withered on the vine I felt sadness and loss. Boonville has changed of course as progress moves on but it seemed like the same place it was forty five years ago. Many great memories and experiences, great people who were cadets there, the staff and cadre. God bless KMS&C and all of the people associated with it from 1844 to the present! NUNQUAM NON PARATUS!

I love Aurora with all my heart! I was born and raised in the east side until i was 20. When i was younger i always wanted to get out this black hole i called it. Couldnt stand it anymore being harrased by APD! And by the black folks! For being Mexican American! Every year i visit and all my family friends always try to convince me to stay and ive tried but i just cant do it! With illinois taxing on everthing and all these unions that dont get shit done. And all the law enforcement that dont even try to follow the law themselfs yeah fuck that
As I recall, Maj Timberlake was at KMS my second year (57-58). I have very mixed emotions about my two years at Kemper. The teachers were OUTSTANDING. The management supervision was really lacking; I think my survival was partially by being on the golf teams both years (HS senior and JC freshman). Overall, it was a good experience and helped me through my 28-year military career. First, Kemper closing in 2002, and now Wentworth closing in 2017 are signs of the times. I always thought that (Kemper and Wentworth) having a junior college was just too much for a Missouri military school. Missouri Military Academy did not go that route, and MMA has not only survived (to date), but seems to be flourishing. Good luck to MMA; may that fine school continue for many, many years to come.
It seems like this was a great place until the 90s when they started taking in ppl from South Chicago and others like myself who were court ordered there. I was one of the only ppl to escape this school. I did learn a lot there as well. I will never forget my Sgt Major who was shown in the closing ceremonies lowering the flag. He was an army Ranger. Great guy.
I was there in 87-88 ! My new boy year was when they were filming Combat High ! Anheuser Bush Grandson was there , he was in my Co. The Day I graduated and receive my commission a few hours later I was on a Plane back to Florida ! I was Home sick !
Your video collage is absolutely divine! It truly brings Aurora's majestic, industrial past to life. Of all the postcards, I recognized most locations, instantly! And they brought to mind my walks through Aurora's Downtown and its historic districts. As an Aurora native, I still marvel at its wonderful architecture and always wonder how "modern" industrial Auroran life was, with all of the loud trains, streetcars, and factories at its busy core; I imagine it was like an old mini-Chicago on the Fox River. It's no wonder, today, Spanish television and radio stations have dubbed Aurora "Aurorita La Bella" (Little Aurora the beautiful).
Beautiful. I miss the old Aurora. The last time I was there I was shocked and hardly recognized the place. I grew up in Aurora and was a member of the Vaqueros Drum and Bugle Corps. It was and will always be a special place to me. Kathi MaCurdy Shrewsbury.
I was there in 83-84. Made some really good friends while I was there. Hate the fact things turn out the way they did for the school. Wasn't much in Boonville back then and the people really didn't like the cadets back then, but it was still fun at times.
Reminds me of my school, NYMA, opened in 1889; celebrate 100 years in 1989. I have a feeling this academy went through the same situation as this one. My academy was nearly closed 2 times, but still made the struggle out alive.
Great Video. Do you have any more Photos/Video's of Aurora Il from back in the day? Of the Old Drive Inn's, The Tivoli Theater, that other Theater in Downtown Aurora (what was it called?).
