@@backtothebarky Never. It's generally calm on the land side of the Goodwins, and besides, we were fearless (A.K.A. stupid) teenagers. We did wear PFDs, and carried a small box of flares, just in case.

Love those Hawk 20s, should be good.. Watch again at the 24m40 point I show the quayside and say it's HW and just under a 5 meter tide that day. Date was 27Aug22 if you want to look up what it was exactly. As I say in the video satellite pic was more useful than the navionics chart, finding the correct way through will be more important for you, it is quite a maze! Make sure you arrive there too early and bump your way up, wouldn't want to be late then get stranded. I wouldn't go up there if it's too windy either. I managed to sail all the way in wind behind me but the meanders and narrow channels mean you'd be very lucky to get the wind fair for both the way in and the way out so defo take your outboard. Some withies and a long punt pole would be useful too! Love the comment thanks for watching, good luck let me know how you get on..

@@backtothebarky Thanks for the tips (I somehow missed the bits about tide at the end of your video). We didn't go in the end: too windy one day and too late to get back before sunset on the next; will try again sometime. But I spent a couple of hours watching the water levels. For others planning this trip, HW at Sidlesham Quay was an hour later than the 6m HW at Pagham Beach - couldn't tell where the channel was by then (though Navionics would probably help) because the entire area of marsh vegitation was covered. So on a 6m tide suggest aim to arrive at the quay an hour *before* Pagham HW and on a 5m tide aim to arrive *at* Pagham HW. (And take care to avoid the submerged concrete structure about 20m past the quay (in the tempting continuation of the channel!).

@@GeorgeMetcalfe-h2b Thanks for replying with the info. V useful observations those well done. Will return to this before I go there next time! Shame you didn't get there but there's always another opportunity. The withies suggestion was for that reason - went back to that pub for a meal (by car) a month later on a higher high tide and whole lot was under. Might pay to mark the critical junctions if you wanted to leave on HW. Defo want to arrive earlier for that reason too as you'll have no chance if it's all under on the way in. Mind you the Google sat image this year is a LW shot and much clearer you could navigate with that pretty well.

Yes this boat has been upgraded with an emergency forestay that's what I've bent that sail onto. It's about a foot or so inside the furler. Need to get a shot of it going upwind next time, never occurred to me when I filmed this. You could of course do this with 2 x hank ons on one Forestay. Again, thanks for watching!

Hi no problem really, obvs sits more level when you counterbalance it when sitting on the opposite side. Yes I use the tiller to steer. That is a very light one though that old 2hp two stroke. That seized up in July, last two trips I've used my heavier 2.5hp 4 stroke still not too heavy goes well. Biggest issue with the Outboards is that the mainsheet snags up on them a lot, that and when they bloody break down 😂 Thanks for watching, check out my latest vid crossing the Solent with the 2.5..

Hi mate.. Good question, it's a radar reflector - I do have one of those tin diamond ones I nearly rigged then thought actually this one would be better as would also hopefully act as a float too if that situation did arise! Glad you liked it.

Mostly it was, I'm always in a hurry in the summer unfortunately! Could have sailed the whole way v v easily in those conditions. Wind was force 3 and 4 ESE ish. Perfect. Shame I had to rush but fun none the less.

Nice one thanks. Yes they have a forward mast step position for using main only. Takes the balance point forward. Believe it's then a 'Cat' rig. I can't be bothered faffing around with the jib really, I'm not racing, I'm sure it will go a bit faster with the jib but only if there's a decent amount of wind, it doesn't seem to do a lot on light airs which I like sailing in.

Well I sailed Mirror in sailing regattas here in South Africa for many hours. What a fabulous buoyant little boat. My father actually ran a company in Joburg building Mirror dinghy's under licence to the Jack Holt designed boat sponsored by the Daily Mirror in the UK

Ps if I did it again I wouldn't bother with a winch and a strap roller I'd just use pully blocks and a cleat.

I should think it is like riding a bike. I started boating by buying a speedboat at 20 (still have it 20 years on see my latest vid 😏) then I learned to sail initially via the army. They use sailing a lot for adventurous training. It's good for that as it puts you in genuine danger at times amongst random people where you need to work together etc. Increased my sailing skills only really by going out solo on my own boats though. That's how you truly learn when there's none around to help you! The books do help too. Thanks for watching my vids matey, get back out on your own Barky it is glory!

Thank you very much Mark. I reckon I found a better one on RUclips since but I've had another look but can't find it now, If I do I'll post it on here. Basically he used the boom as a gin pole (with mast hinged forward) and a series of pullys that fed lines to the winches and it somehow compensated for the change in lengths etc. Still, this solution is quite simple none the less. Thank you. Yes it's a great spot lucky to have a mooring there. Maybe the old sail is a bit out of shape. Luff is sinched down fairly tight via the downhaul. Head is tied off about 3 in below the hole for its tie, I could tie that up higher maybe. I have always left it that long as I read a rigging guide that said that. Would make the slot between the foot and the boom even bigger though. Not a racer anyway so I'm not too worried, but I'll consider it next time I rig her, might save the noggin a few knocks too. Was it this one? The sail is signed in permenent marker near the tack by the sail maker 1974 (I think you can see it in the video somewhere) I think I looked up the hull serial number that confirmed the year too. Glad I have been the source of some nostalgia for you. You should check out the 'Mirror Cruising' channel that guy is still sailing the sure he was possibly sailing them back then too! Ha ha I've just googled it to check it too... Alot of my sailing terminology is 200 years old because I'm a great fan of those historic napoleonic era novels. Whilst driving the tractor I listen to audible audio books. I've `read' all the Patrick Obrian (of master and commander fame) books twice over and all the Julian Stockwin Thomas Kydd books and most of the Richard Bolitho Novels too. For eg I got the word Barky and the name Tyger from them. They are v entertaining and inspirational and better than radio 2 by leagues and leagues! Great to hear that you are enjoying my vids - I have footage from a bigger trip in June of an abandoned channel crossing on the big boat (obvs not the mirror!) not got round to editing yet but will do soon so stay tuned if that sort of thing floats your boat so to speak.

@@jimray937 Yes it belonged to Basil Panakis who wrote a book called 'The Jester Challenge and beyond'. If you Google that you'll see her. So it's a very capable boat I bought it with the intention of attempting the Jester Baltimore challenge but have since changed my mind methinks 😏. Maybe once the wee ones are grown up I'll have a go. Still intend to keep her for a while and have some adventures with my crew, but Offshore single handing probably not for now.
