Harmonica playing positions mystery solved.

What do harmonica players mean when they talk about playing in 1st position, 2nd position or 3rd position etc. Hopefully, watching this video will help clear up the mystery.

When we do encore's with the Band, we usually end with our version of 'The Liquidator.' Key C - F Harmonica 2nd position. I only play a draw chord and blow chord throughout the whole number, just varying the rhythm at key moments. It's more difficult than it seems.

Mr. C, I love it. Impressive. You and Saxophone, of course.
The question I've never heard answered is, "Why would a person who has 12 harmonicas (one in each key) would want to play anything other than 1st position?"
@@DanielMyers-l3j It really does depend on the type of music you want to play. In the case of Blues music, a lot of pre 2nd World War players did play in the key of the harmonica (1st position). However all the great Blues players from then on till now predominantly use 2nd position (key of G on a C harmonica). It enables you to be far more soulful and expressive which are key features in good blues playing. Hope that helps. Best wishes, Ricky
You explained that very well.
@@claydobbins9342 Thanks Clay. 👍
Excellent instructions! TY from USA
Very 'cool'. I've been fooling around with harmonica for close to 4 months now. Trying to get a few blues licks down. Coming from decades of blues guitar noodling. Interestingly, I knew my circle of 5ths, (loosely, lol), like I know what it's about, & can circle chords on the guitar around it, and I understand the 1 4 5 etc, but I still had to think a bit about which key harp I needed for cross harp. I'm much better at it now, but it was a tad confusing 4 months ago..... but I managed to have discovered on my own how sweet 3rd position can be just the other day, and what key does that in. It's amazing that with the correct diatonic set up, you _can_ play in _any_ song key with just ONE harmonica, tho I can see that would take somewhat of a world class harmonica maestro to do so. But if you've never played anything before, or have zero music theory know how...I can see how this could be very head scratching for quite a long time. Basically, a C harmonica is just all the white keys on a piano. (without any bends that is), If that helps anyone at all, lol. It's the term 'position' that threw me off here for a while.... a Position is simply what key you play in, i.e. what the home starting note would be. Like playing all the scales in open position on guitar type thingy. I guess the really good news here is, that whatever you learn on one harp, is playable on all the other diatonics.
@@Bloozguy Hi there. Thanks for your comment. All the things you say are absolutely right. The notion of positions can be confusing. I admire the players like Howard Levy who can play fluently in any key on a C diatonic but it’s not for me. 1st, 2nd and 3rd position are what I use. I have dabbled with 4th. Best wishes, Ricky

@@rubmans1 Yes.,That’s a good solution. 👍
That'll teach you to eat oatmeal before practice! 😁 I use a tiny bent paperclip to reach in and just "tap" the reeds while the covers are still on - usually works for me. One does have to be careful, though. I slipped once, and had to take everything apart to extract the paperclip, only to find it had damaged the reed. It took me another hour to replace the reed (yes, I do have all of those fiddly tools to replace reed rivets) from an old reed plate.
Since I was a child, I have disassembled/dismantled untold numbers of harmonica. Sometimes for the fun of it. Other times, in an attempt to repair it. To this day, even with my mechanical skills, I cannot remember successfully repairing one harp😅😅😅 I hate taking them apart attempting to repair a reed. They always end up in a trash heap😅😅😅
Found you on your vid on how to play the harp piece from On the Road Again and was hoping you had lessons! Never played but I’m gonna try!

Ok now I mixed up. I thought that 3D position would be G if i play with C…??
@@ikust007 No, on a C harmonica playing in G is 2nd position. It works round the cycle of 5ths. C, 5th = G - 2nd pos on a C harp. G, 5th = D - 3rd pos on a C harp. D, 5th = A - 4th pos on a C harp. Etc. It does take some getting your head round. Best wishes, Ricky

Good luck with the CD Ricky. It sounds really good and reminds me of the 1960s. The fanfare is a bit expensive? I bet those old ska players had a cheaper alternative? was my boy lollipop played on one of those?
@@richardhonour1522 Hi Richard. Thank you. Roy Richards is the great Jamaican harmonica player from back in those days and your right, he would have used whatever tremolo harmonica he was able to buy. The harmonica solo in My Boy Lollipop is a regular richter diatonic blues harp in G, playing in 2nd position. Best wishes, Ricky
Mr. Cool, I admire your work and playing. I enjoy everything about harmonicas. As youngsters, we were introduced to diatonic and tremolo. They were cheap, and you got 'em from the 'Dime Store'. We tooted around on them and occasionally learned to play a song, or a phrase or two (I can't recall how many "we" destroyed and dismantled). I try to play any and every harmonica my money can buy. I kinda steer clear of customs and new innovations until I can perfect what I am attempting to achieve, but I do own a Brendan Power "Lucky13." Love it. I'm considering some of his other simpler innovations, like "PowerBender" and "PowerDraw." I love so many forms and styles of music (no reggae, rap, or hip-hop, although there are some impressive guys in those areas. The style of music just isn't for me. I'm too old, I guess) Thanks for posting. Good luck to ya'.
@@claydobbins9342 Good to hear from you Clay and thank you. It is the early reggae I like most mainly because Ska developed out of American rhythm and blues (Roscoe Gordon deserves a lot of credit there) and Rock Steady is heavily Soul influenced, particularly groups like The Impressions. Best wishes, Ricky
