9:20 This story of how Bird got his nickname is contradicted by Parker himself, in an interview for the famous Downbeat article by Michael Levin and John Wilson (the "Bop is no love-child of jazz" article). The article paraphrases Parker as saying (and I think this would be hard for him to have made up, even if he wanted to distance himself from the roadkill story) that his name went through a series of mutations. "As Charlie reconstructs it, it went from Charlie to Yarlie to Yarl to Yard to Yardbird to Bird." I don't know if he was lying, but apparently that's what he said. The whole eating roadkill story may be true, I don't know where it originated, but nobody ever seems to mention this other thing that Parker himself absolutely did say.
