The requirement for in-person learning feels punitive and discriminatory against health-compromised households. There are students who are honors/advanced students (like my own) who would be disadvantaged by virtual schools. With the state's proposed attendance caps, virtual schools would only provide bare-bones classes, as the demand for a broader spectrum of classes would likely not be supported with 1500 student limits. With Governor Lee's reluctance to implement mask mandates and the rise of COVID variants, it's pretty early to allow the SOE to expire and to make this mandate. Governor Lee has neither attended school during a pandemic, nor sent his own children to a public school during COVID, and I doubt Ms. Owen has school-aged children. Neither are likely managing health-compromised households. And there are kids with anxiety, etc., who are not confident in going back. Why should they suffer a substandard education by being separated from their base schools, where they have received accommodations and supports from the administrators who've gotten to know them? Again, punitive and discriminatory because of hidden agendas.
