The melodic line of Private Dancer chorus sounds quite like Love over Gold itself. I'm glad to be used listeng to the latter, rather than the former on that album...

The drum pattern on the verses are also like the intro of Telegraph Road. Not sure it would have worked to have had both on the album.

I'd love to hear your input on the process of recording the legendary Telegraph Road. Yes, Mark wrote it alone and you are not credited for any contribution but the song is piano driven and I'm pretty sure Mark didn't sat down at the piano. Your contribution to the Dire Straits rock & roll orchestra is invaluable. Thank You for that.

Hola Alan.

I actually think Beck’s solo on “Private Dancer” is one of the most lyrical and beautiful I’ve ever heard. I know Mark slagged it off, but I love it. I put it up there with any of Jeff’s best.

Always believed Alan's playing was just as important as Mark knopflers voice and guitar in Dire Straits. It just wouldn't have been as good with anyone else. Alan's playing would tear me up just as much as marks guitar playing would.

MK played this monument of a song 4 out of the 5 times I have seen him live since 2001; and I regard it as one of the best songs ever written. Alan's arrangement, too, is out of this world and makes the song into something absolutely outstanding. I remember one evening as a student at the University of Bamberg, Germany: 5 friends and I sitting together, joking, laughing, drinking, chatting, whilst German public broadcast station Bayern 3 was playing in the background. And they played the Romeo & Juliet live version from the On Every Night album - in full length! Silence in the room, 6 guys sipping their beer, just listening in awe. It was a wonderful moment of appreciation and delight.

The "Big River" is one of well constructed and arranged songs. First time on radio I listened to it, and mentioned this song, because of nice arranged harmonics, and somehow that guitar sound cached me..., - just later found that Mark Knopfler played the guitar in this song (sory, I never new that Alan also has played there). I have been the fan of Dire Straits, so i started to listen to this song again and again, more carefully. At that time I did not got too much in lyrics (due to my english knowledge that time), but by the time I enjoyed the lyrics in full. Great song, and great story of how times and generations are passing buy.

I met Alan through my work today which has nothing to do with music. We were chatting today briefley then he very casually mentioned he is a keybord player and that he used to play with Dire Straits. I have just done some research on Alan and I am totally amazed at his achievments. Alan is a very humble man and totally played down his status is within the music industry. Alan, if you are reading this and wondering who has written this comment. I am the guy with the curly ponytail who composes orchestral music just for fun. It was an utter pleasure meeting and chatting with you today (9/6/22) Alan. It is not every day I get to meet a legend. All the best. Andy

I thought he was geordie? Not another 'geordie artist' ashamed of his natural accent, Alan, you are in great company, ie, Bryan ferry, sting, Robson green, Jimmy nail(sometimes geordie, sometimes not) tim healy is still using his natural accent, good on him! You can still be articulate and have geordie dialect, yes, some can't I know😂, but c'mon lads, don't forget where your'e from🤔😊
