Lightmate 2 Spot Meter for Film Photography - Disappointing Performance
Просмотров 9478 месяцев назад
In this video, I review the Lightmate 2 Spot Meter, a device I was excited to try for my film photography. With its clear LCD screen, multiple settings, and straightforward operation, it seemed like the perfect tool for any film photographer. However, the reality was quite different. The Lightmate 2 gave some of the strangest light meter readings, which did not translate well for film cameras. ...

      Canon Remote Switch 60 T3 (aka RS60-T3). Fun fact: the "60" refers to the 60cm length. Later switches include the RS80-N3 and the TC80-N3 as used in EOS 3 and EOS-1V and many DSLRs.

      Riddle me this : did you actually LOOK in the viewfinder of the camera you are reviewing? Or better still, use the camera and check out its functions? It is quite clear that there are five (5) AF points. If you want to have lots of happy enthusiastic and engaged subscribers, put in the minimal work. This was a MAJOR failing. IMHO. There are many sources of correct information. Heck, the Canon Museum (it’s a web site) can steer you straight with specs. Back in the 90s and still going (and expanding) today is Photography In Malaysia - MIR. You can spend sooooo much time there. He had info I have a hard time finding elsewhere. You’re welcome. 😉

    I went to Lowe’s and found a very solid cutting board there. Instead of steel gas or galvanized pipe, I went with a piece of 1” Structural Pipe and the accompanying base fitting as well as an end plug. It looks much better. I also put some Scotch no-slip pads on the bottom of the board as well as on the bottom of my light box to keep everything from slipping. The pipe is 36” but can be cut down with a hack saw or grinder.

    Great video I’ve been trying to dslr scan my 35mm since I got it into dslr scanning for 120 (no problems for 120). I have cheap scanner scanner for 35mm which has been working great since I don’t need fancy stuff but unfortunately it’s been on the fritz and been trying to scan 35mm dslr wise and I think my problem was that I was scared to go so slow on shutter speeds (I have Sony a5100) and I was sticking at 1/125 and I couldn’t get images so I went lower at 1/60 and got photos but some digital noise still so long story short I’m going to try all shutter speeds now bc of this video 😂 when you said your shutter is at 2 seconds I was hit with the realization I can to that! Idk why I’ve been hesitant/scared to do so thank you!!!!

    Thank you for your video! Firstly, the full name of the product is “Lightmate Lite 2”, not Lightmate 2. Secondly, it's not a spot meter. Its metering angle is 35 degrees, similar to the Voigtlander vc meter ii, making it a wide-angle meter. Spot meters are usually handheld, with metering angles of 1 degree, 5 degrees, or at least 10 degrees. If you shoot enough film, having the shutter and aperture designed in 1/3 steps is actually very convenient. For example, in shutter priority mode, if you use 1/125 shutter speed and metering suggests using F7.1, and your lens markings on the camera are close to F5.6 and F8, F7.1 falls between them. You can then either shoot at F5.6, which will overexpose slightly, or at F8, which will underexpose slightly. This doesn't mean the metering is inaccurate.It provides precise exposure values for your reference. Note that it's a reference. Your creative intent determines your choices. If you're shooting negative film or want the subject brighter, you can choose F5.6. If shooting slide film, you can choose F8. It's entirely up to your creative intent.Don't let your camera's shutter stops limit your ideas. If your lens has continuous aperture adjustment, you should still choose F7.1, which lies between f5.6 and F8. Even if you're using a light meter like the Voigtlander vc meter ii, it also provides intermediate values on the aperture dial, not just full stops, so you still need to consider these factors. Light meters that only display full stops for aperture and shutter settings actually round off to the nearest full stop in their software and display it. Additionally, the red button is for decoration; if you don't need it, you can remove it and install it on the shutter release button of your film camera. This helps with the issue of loose connections with the old-fashioned threaded shutter release interface. Removing the red button won't affect the normal use of the light meter. If the screen is not visible outdoors, you can increase the screen brightness in the settings. The issue of language settings not being saved can be resolved by downloading the latest firmware update from lightmate.pro/support/fwdownload.html. The latest V3.1.0 firmware has added the option of 1/3 STEP or FULL STEP for aperture and shutter speed, and the firmware can be updated simply by using a USB-C data cable.

    I would have to disagree with this video. There are a lot of vintage cameras that use 1/3rd stops and a lot of large format cameras that use more stops and speeds than an SLR 35mm. This light meter has many features that cover 35mm, medium format, and large format. If you get a reading that doesn't line up with your camera or lens then you choose the number closest to the reading it's not rocket science. Also, this is not a spot meter it's a reflective meter. This seems more like a user error than a bad product.

      @@Filmwitheric I'm not a RUclipsr so no videos from me sorry, but I do shoot quite a lot and have for many years. My suggestion to you is to gain some more knowledge about all sort of film photography beyond 35mm before you make a video crapping on a product that works as it is intended to work. Your video is a review of your experience using the device as opposed to what results you got using the product. Did you even try to get shots using it? Where are those? Did the exposures come out ok? What exposure did the device give you and what did you shoot, what did that image look like? That would be a much more fair evaluation of the device. The device would be flawed if your images came out at an incorrect exposure based on it's readings. Saying you were confused and unclear on how to use it means you personally had an issue with it and still need to learn how to properly use the device. If you do not see a personal use for all the bells and whistles the device offer than that's ok get a more simple tool that works for you. But for someone that does shoot 35mm, medium format, and large format and also uses many prime lenses this device checks a lot of boxes for those types of shooters and offers a lot more than other devices with similar form factors. This is not an attack on you I just think it's not a fair assessment for a device that actually does do what it sets out to do.

    • @jazminegarcia4025
      @jazminegarcia4025 7 месяцев назад

      It seems like you missed a few points from the video. While there are indeed vintage and large format cameras with different stop increments, the focus here was on common usage scenarios for the majority of photographers. You've made us aware that it's not rocket science, but as someone with dyslexia and learning difficulties, these things can be more challenging than they seem. Not everyone finds math and technical details straightforward. As for user error vs. bad product, let's just say that even the best tools can have room for improvement.

      @Alex-c3o1o 8 месяцев назад

      Yeah also it's not a spot meter, the body isn't steel but aluminium, many cameras can set 1/200 or in between shutter speeds. You can also do that with your aperture. Don't get me wrong it does not seem like a good device, but f12 is closest to f11, like you said a third stop away. He does really not seem to know what he is talking about.

    • @DeanteBeckem22
      @DeanteBeckem22 8 месяцев назад

      Yeah. Light isn't always dead on and scenes can't always be broken down into clear f4 at 1/60 sec to get "perfect" exposure. The meter just tells you what you need to get to a calibrated middle grey, it's always still up to you to decide the final parameters for your individual scene. Other meters that round for you are actually taking small parts of the creative process away in return for convenience.

    Hey Eric! Really loving this setup and seriously thinking about building one using the same materials. That said, I've also noticed the shakyness when you were focusing and wanted to ask if you think this could be atributed to the SmallRig Super Camera Clamp Mount. It's fairly cheap so I was wondering if it's reliable in keeping the camera stable. Other than that, I saw that the cutting board is only 0.63" thick. Do you find it enough as well? Again, great idea and it was the most affordable DIY setup I've found, so congrats on that.

I have the 1960s Olympus Pen ee half frame camera, even though it was marketed as a 'budget' camera for the travelling photographer, it's made of aluminium and other metals, has a well engineered solid feel and the lens is a zuiko glass lens which olympus put a lot of the budget into. A couple of points: 1. don't snug any of the screws until you have them all in place. I noticed you struggling a bit. 2. If the cutting board wood has all the strips running in one direction, it'd be good to screw and glue some strips on the bottom side crossways to the alignment on the board. You want to prevent warping.

    Patterson tanks use more chemistry then steel but the biggest problem is that if they are the slightest bit wet or dirty, they will bind up going on the reel. You must take the reels apart to dry them or let them dry. Water can stay in the nooks and crannies for days causing you greif in the dark. Metal reels are so much better once you spend a couple minutes to learn how to load them.
