A place where I can discuss book-related things and my reading!
Quarterly Reading Goals Check-in
Hello!
discord: discord.gg/pnMDJMka
In today's video I go through my reading goals set at the beginning of the year and discuss how I'm doing now that it's been 3/4 through the year!
I've been trying to read more from my shelves and I can't say I've been doing well on that. I also try to figure out how many sci fi I read this quarter (harder than you may expect).
How are you doing with your reading goals?

Best wishes with what you choose to read. I hope you get some great stories.
I love books with ghosts! My favorite is Heaven Official's Blessing which one of the main characters is a ghost (its a romance tho, not spooky)
Oooh, I could give that a try 😀 thanks for the recommendation
omg it's so nice to see a brazilian book in your receives!!! I hope you love Paulo Coelho! I have an indication if you allow me! Barren Lives (Vidas Secas in Portuguese) from Graciliano Ramos, it's based on true stories from Brazil in the 30's! about a pop artist that i'm listening is ashnikko, billie elish and bea miller for sure, I don't if kinda makes sense to summer, but that's what I've be listening to! I loved the vlog, watched it while I was doing dishes and lunch!
Oooh, thanks for the recommendation. Ive never listened to Bea Miller so I'll havr to give that a try. & thank you so much, glad to keep you company 😁
Let's talk about BOoOOoks 👻 I love your costume! Heheh, thank you for the spooky recommendations 😊
Thank you 😊
Love this vlog! New subscriber from Denmark!
@@tammiemller4663 velkommen!
I loved Eva Ibbotson's books as a kid, specifically Which Witch? and The Secret of Platform 13. The Rope Trick by Lloyd Alexander also has some fab witchy representation! If you like Philip Pullman, I highly recommend Clockwork. One of my all-time faves and it's a great winter read. No explicit witches, but it does have magic!! The Three Dark Crowns series by Kendare Blake was a a fun witchy series (it's not like AMAZING, but I still had FUN). However, the ultimate crowing jewel of witchy books for me is Slewfoot by Brom. Highly highly highly recommend!! Love this video idea! (ᴗ ͜ ᴗ✿)
The Secret of Platform 13!!! Omg that was something from my childhood that has been at the fringes of my memory for years. I must get a copy and read it again. Love the recommendations. I just recently read The Foundling by Lloyd Alexander and I enjoyed it so I really should check out some of his other work.
123 visualisations! I’ll take this as a sign
oh how fun!
You truly seem like such a genuine and kind soul. Im glad to have stumbled upon your channel and congratulations on your achievement!!
How nice! Thanks a bunch 😊
I unhauled my copy of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance years ago without reading it because I’ve never been able to get a good handle on what that book is actually about. But I’m still interested in it. It sounds like I need to read Ducks because the bits you shared hit close to home. The Ursula K. LeGuin book also sounds interesting. I enjoyed this week of videos!
I told a few people that I'd started reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and one reaction was "that book has absolutely nothing to do with motorcycle maintenance" which has made me even more curious to see what the rest of it is. & thanks 😊
Yay, thanks for trying my recommendations! I’m glad you liked what you read of them. I made my book club read Ducks and they didn’t like it so I’m glad you enjoyed the first bit at least.
@meghanstanbridge3467 Yes! Thank you for taking the time to recommend books. It's really one of my favorite things to see on any given day
James Baldwin's Giovanni's Room made me empathetic toward people who love and are gsy. I wasn't even in high school when I picked it up. It's a lovely book.
Thanks for the comment! I've never read Giovanni's Room but I'll definitely add it to my list!
Library looks great. Best wishes with what you choose to read.
Thank you!
Five out of ten is pretty good
Three Cups of Tea has shown up in most of the little free libraries and thrift stores near me. Good choice for a good riddance on that one. I’m going to miss your daily videos! It’s been a work break treat for me to watch this week. 😊
Oh thank you 😊 Yes, I have been having fun with them as well but it's not sustainable long term. I might try some more frequent posting though.
I would also get rid of the Augusten Burroughs book but maybe that’s just me. I agree with another commenter who said The Secret Life of Bees is so easy to find that if you do want to read it later it won’t be difficult to get a copy. I forgot about the Three Cups of Tea story being fabricated! I’m glad I haven’t read it.
I'm so bad at unhauling. I'm like, "well maybe I could just sit down and read this and then I'd know if it was bad"
the secret life of bees is such a bargain bin classic you could find it at a thrift store so easily if you ever change your mind but also i see it all the time and know its beloved but just cant bring myself to read a single word in it
also u crack me up so bad so easily
You're right, I could pick it up again any time! I've tried to read it like 3 times and never got more than a couple pages deep
Congratulations on reaching 500 subscribers. Best wishes with your reading choices and to your channel!
Thank you 😊
Personally I think It's kinda nice to see how our taste has changed when it comes to picking up books whether based off genre/cover and author. Saw this pop up as I was about to close RUclips for the night buttt had to watch this rq
I had a phase in high school where I thought I was going to be some sort of world traveller and I got a bunch of travel memoirs. I basically only read that 75% of 3 Cups of Tea and didn't touch the genre again.
I've never read any of the ones you're unhauling but now I want to read that Beautiful Darkness graphic novel! 😅
I have some mixed feelings about it, but if it sounds good to you go for it!
One of my favourite books about a witch is called Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townsend Warner. It's Victorian and a little wild.
Oh my goodness, this sounds AMAZING! 🧹🧙♀️
hello there! I just wanted to say that you reached BRAZIL!!! you have a wonderful light, please continue 💚
Oh wow, obrigada!!
omg i always see squirrel seeks chipmunk at thrift stores/goodwill and always thought it seemed like it's supposed to be cute!! i never knew it was like THAT
@@connorcaughlin4275 I wanted to like it. I wanted it to be at least less gruesome if not a charming combo of silly/cute/funny.
A lot of children books are beautifully written, they carry such a strong message in the form of words so simple and easy to comprehend. So it was nice to see some mentioned in your life changing books because I hardly see people mention them in their favorite all time. Also this is my first time coming across your channel, I loveee seeing people talk about books so might have to stick around and check out your other videos
@@timetwo2230 Yes! Thank you 😊
The books that changed my life, The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte and Pereira Maintains by Antonio Tabucchi. Really the love of books and reading changed my life.
Love love love The Metamorphosis! I read some other stories by Franz Kafka and In the Penal Colony will never leave my brain. I have had Wuthering Heights on my shortlist TBR and I suppose I really should get to it - Perhaps next week or October I had never heard of Pereira Maintains so thank you so much for letting me know about it - it sounds so good!
If you don't mind my asking, what is The Metamorphosis about? I've always wanted to read, but always been a bit apprehensive, could you please give me your review and why you think I should read it (if you want to ofc!) ❤
Congratulations! 🎉🎉
🥳Thank you! 🥳
Congratulations 🥳
Thanks!!
Congrats on the subscriber milestone! 🎉 I have plans to read The Wind in the Willows this month but I haven’t gotten to it yet. I’ve never read it or seen a movie version.
Thank you! 🥳🥳 I hope you enjoy it!
Hello to Big Al! I also have a male cat who trills a lot.
Yes! What a sweetie. What is his name?
@@JennyFernBooks Mister Boffin after a character in Charles Dickens’ Our Mutual Friend.
@@katsbooks2631 such a great name!
I also read Partials! I DNFed it
I think you made the right choice
I remember reading Birthmarked as a teen and not really liking it... the midwifery was very memorable though
I’m from Canada. I hope you enjoy your time here! The Hunger Games is still a pretty solid read. I agree with your comments about the genre as a whole. I like a good dystopian novel but the YA ones are often insane.
Canada was lovely! I was there for SUCH A SHORT TIME. But Vancouver was a really beautiful city and Squamish was such a wonderfully beautiful place! What non-YA dystopians do you recommend?
@@JennyFernBooks Vancouver is a cool city! I really loved Station Eleven and I thought The Book of the Unnamed Midwife (here we go again with midwives, lol) was quite good. There are two books by an Indigenous Canadian author Waubgeshig Rice that are more post-apocalyptic but they’re great: Moon of the Crusted Snow and Moon of the Turning Leaves.
Oh also! I read Snapdragon and loved it. Great recommendation.
@@meghanstanbridge3467 oh wow, I actually have Moon of the Crusted Snow checked out from the library currently! I'll be reading it soon
Greetings fellow STEM comrade 🫡 ty for the tag!! ( •ᴗ•)
🤩 you can't say literally no one is asking you to do this!
woah, didnt expect a Girls Last Tour mention. its very niche but a personal favorite, its only 6 volumes and so creative/bleak/cute, which is an odd mix of qualities. you might like The Promised Neverland based on your videos, its very bingeable and takes some interesting turns.
@@nycReaching thankd for the recommendation (and for some more context on Girls Last Tour. I'll try to pick that one back up now)
Thanks for doing the tag!
Yes! It was such a fun one
okay i love this concept and your vibes are so good!! i’m gonna have to take a look at my tbr shelf and come up with my answers!! dying at you saying it looked like a can of beans exploded on the one book 😭
☺️ that's so kind! & I'm excited for what you come up with!!
Younger me really enjoyed Middlesex and David Sedaris. I can see what you mean about Sedaris being mean-spirited and not funny. I stopped keeping up with his new releases years ago. I read and enjoyed The Wave a few years ago. It has been surprisingly memorable for me. I never thought a book about freakishly giant ocean waves and extreme surfing would stick with me but it has. I thought Susan Casey had an obvious crush on Laird Hamilton that came through in the book and I was surprised editors let that stay in. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on that book, but yeah give the cover a wipe down first. I used to own that same edition of Doctor Zhivago but never read it. Rebecca was a DNF for me. It was so slow and boring. I think it was the right call to DNF because I’ve heard it’s a book all about building the gothic atmosphere. I don’t want lush writing building an atmosphere. I need plot and for something to actually happen!
Oh my gosh, now I need to read The Wave! The drama! & for Rebecca, yes, I fear the same might happen with me. But who knows, maybe there will be some element that is cool to me.
I’m have put a hold on Snapdragon at the library. It sounds great! My two favourite graphic novels are Persepolis and Ducks.
@@meghanstanbridge3467 Those both look great - I will put them on my list! 😊
I love Public Domain books, and I'm an adapter. Using these books as source material to create new stories and exciting new characters is extremely valuable.
One Piece Time!!!!!
10:43 Ahahaha Anya the Goat!!!!!

Mam can i download public domain novels from Gutenberg and publish them in my blog?
I recommend The Housekeeper and the Professor. beautiful book about some relationships formed around a love of math. made me cry the first time i read it!
@@azizajones5660 oh wonderful, thank you 😊
I’m sorry about your cat. 😢 I can’t think of anything super bad that I randomly grabbed at the library but the best was a collection of blog posts by Ursula K. Le Guin called No Time to Spare.
@@meghanstanbridge3467 thank you ❤️ & that does sound good!
I’m new to your channel and I really like your videos. I like the pacing! And I like the variety of videos you put out.
Oh thank you so much! I really appreciate you commenting 🥰
Hey yay my recommendations! 3:13 so excited to see what you think
Project Hail Mary was great!
With the mood I’m currently in, I probably wouldn’t read any of these. But I think A False Sense of Well Being is a great title!
@@katsbooks2631 Just recently I got a bunch more books donated to the little free library including two more that I'm interested in!
I hope everything turns out for the better with your cat. 🤞❤❤❤ I lost one of my cats on June 20th and our family unit doesn’t feel right without him. There’s a big hole in our lives where he should be. And to make it worse he was the one that was more of a lap kitty and would always cuddle me while I was reading. 💔 I also own a copy of Childhood’s End that I haven’t read. If you want to buddy read it at some point, let me know.
@@katsbooks2631 Thanks for the well wishes ❤️ Sorry for your loss. This video was filmed a little bit ago and since then we lost the little man. Tbh I have never done a buddy read... it kind of scares me LOL
@@JennyFernBooks I’m sorry to hear that! I hope you and your family are doing well and taking care of yourselves.
