Saloon vs Public Bar
Behind every door there is a story, and pub doors recall an age when society was more stratified. In Doors of London, each chapter ends with a couple of pubs. As they looked through the colour proofs, the authors Cath Harries and Melanie Backe-Hansen chatted to their editor, Chris Schüler, about the difference between the Saloon and Public Bar and how this was reflected in the architecture. In the Public Bar you’d have the rough guys and lino on the floor, while in the Saloon Bar you’d get carpet and comfortable seats. Each would have a separate entrance on the street.
