Reflections on the Campaign
It's a strange feeling to be happy in defeat. Despite the fact that we lost the election, I'm thrilled and tremendously proud of our campaign.
I knew that winning was next to impossible, but you'll never change things if you don't try.
I want to thank every single person who supported me, volunteered on our team, and voted for me. I believe we were an example of what politics could be - positive, collaborative, issues-focused, and above all, fun.
This has been a transformative experience and I know that I left nothing back, that I gave every single ounce of myself to running for office. I learned so much and I grew as a person and I'm so thankful for that.
Sometimes it's not where you finish ...

Responding to the Afghanistan Crisis
Просмотров 843 года назад
To date, our campaign has raised more than $40,000 in donations which have exceeded our fundraising goals and is allowing us to run a competitive campaign we can be proud of. We are in an election that no one wanted, in the middle of a pandemic, surrounded by wildfires, and unable to adequately respond to a global humanitarian crisis. We will be suspending active fundraising efforts at this tim...
What's Next In Afghanistan w/ Laila Balkhi

At the time of this recording, Canada had just announced the end of its evacuation mission and two blasts outside the Kabul airport had killed dozens of people. The entire world is watching to see what happens next. Today I speak with Laila Balkhi, an Engagement & Policy Research Analyst at the Global Institue of Water Security who has parents in Kabul. We talk about her remarkable journey flee...
Vote for Science. Vote Phil De Luna in Toronto-St. Paul's

I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Phil De Luna. I'm a scientist and a cleantech innovator. I moved to Canada from the Philippines when I was five years old. I was raised in Windsor, Ontario. My dad was an auto worker. My mom worked in customer service. They couldn't give me much, but they could give me an education. And they always told me that people can take away things from you, but t...
Election Week One!
Просмотров 1043 года назад
I can't believe the first week of the election is over and we're well into week two! The first week was certainly a whirlwind with press conferences, sign-waving at street corners, collecting signatures, and everything in between. I normally try to have a video every few days but given how intense the campaign cycle is, I'll be lucky if I can post a weekly vlog. I’m Phil De Luna and I'm running...
A Just Transition for Canada's Oil & Gas Workers w/ Luisa Da Silva
Просмотров 1503 года назад
We know what we need to do to avoid the worst of the climate crisis. Unfortunately, so many people's livelihoods still depend on fossil fuel industries. Growing up in Windsor during the fall of the automotive sector, I know what it's like to live in a community dependent on one industry, and what happens when that industry fades away. That exact same thing is happening in today's oil & gas indu...
Anxiously Awaiting a Snap Election
Просмотров 823 года назад
Election speculation has reached a fever pitch and all signs are pointing to the writ being dropped within days. Personally, I'm excited and ready to go - I've been working away for months and I can't wait for election day. In this vlog I talk about how I've prepared for the election to drop, why a minority government would want to call the election, and how I'm feeling in this moment in time. ...
Our Campaign Tech Stack

As a scientist and innovator, it's only natural for me to want to apply the latest and greatest in technology to help boost my campaign to the next level. Our volunteer team has some amazingly talented people including PhDs, engineers, digital marketers, and web developers. In this video I break down our tech stack - basically all software as a service (SaaS) and no-code tools that I used to bu...
How Being a Candidate Affects Mental Health
Просмотров 6743 года назад
We're expecting an election to be called any day now. It's already been a whirlwind and we're just getting started. When I started this journey one of my main goals was to give you a full and transparent view of what it's like being a candidate - the good and the bad. Today I talk a little bit about the bad. In this vlog I talk about mental health, the stress from media reports of infighting in...
On the Nature of Impact - Lessons from Ursula Franklin

I recently gave a keynote speech at the University of Toronto's Materials Science & Engineering Department on the Nature of Impact. Inspired by the remarkable life of Prof. Ursula Franklin, the first female University Professor at the University of Toronto, I talk about what it means to be impactful. I argue that impact occurs at the interface of disciplines and I share my own experiences on ho...
Visiting Toronto's Afro-Caribbean Farmer's Market
Просмотров 853 года назад
We're visiting the Afro-Caribbean Farmer's Market in the heart of Little Jamaica, the northwest corner of Toronto-St. Paul's. This area has the largest number of Black-owned businesses in Toronto and have unfortunately been impacted by the pandemic and also light-rail transit construction. Farmer's markets are the hub of many communities, and they should be supported and protected. Not only do ...
How To Canvass and Go Door to Door
Просмотров 4,2 тыс.3 года назад
The most important thing that you can do as a candidate is to meet your constituents. Every moment you aren't in front of a voter is an opportunity cost to get you another vote. Canvassing and going door-to-door to talk to people is the most effective way to have a one-on-one conversation with your neighbours. In this video, I visit Mike Morrice, the candidate for Kitchener-Centre, to learn how...
Solutions Summit: Real Policies for Affordable Housing, Green Jobs and Supporting Essential Workers

On Wednesday, July 21 I hosted a policy panel discussion on green jobs, affordable housing, and essential work. Nathalie Des Rosiers, Principal of Massey College gave opening remarks and we spoke on the topics of: 1. Green jobs that leave no one behind with Helen Watts (Director, Student Energy) 2. Housing that all can afford with Dianne Saxe (Deputy Leader, GPO) 3. Supporting our essential wor...
Youth and The Future of Energy w/ Helen Watts
Просмотров 1243 года назад
Youth will disproportionately shoulder the burden of climate change as time goes on. Many wonder what kind of world and future awaits us. This is exactly why youth took the streets in the summer of 2019 to urge governments to act, and why youth continue to look for solutions to the climate crisis. In this vlog, I have a conversation with Helen Watts, Director of Global Partnership at Student En...
How a Party Leader Recruits People to Run
Просмотров 1343 года назад
This vlog was originally shot in early May. Since then, there has been internal Green Party infighting including calling a vote for non-confidence in the current Green Party Leader, Annamie Paul. Despite that, I felt this was an important episode for me to share and it is authentic to my reasons for running. I personally feel that Annamie deserves to lead the party through an election and that ...

I would not open the door to a masked stranger. That's odd
Thanks Phil for sharing all of your videos. You have offered an authentic and personal view into what it’s like to run which will help many others who may consider it someday. Well done! I read a book years ago that talked about similar experiences, called Tragedy in the Commons, which MPs shared their experiences once elected or retired after. It was a fascinating read. Thanks again!
We dont need more diversity. The ethnic makeup of Canada is already diverse. We need housing affordability. I dont need more taxes on my paycheck while billion dollar corporations are getting away with fraud, price fixing, avoiding taxes, and greed.
❤ well I love 💕 you nephew Dakota
I am from India good job
Good job.
Great introductory breakdown, well done!
This was great, thanks Phil!
Great speech!
Thank you Phil. We need more Filipino-Canadian role models for our youth who are growing up severely underrepresented despite Filipinos being one of the largest immigrant groups in Canada.
With abrupt climate change upon us .. efforts seem too little too late. Dapilipenis bred us a modern day illustrado… a Rizal Canuck … out to save the world … wading into muddy waters
Thanks for running Phil and for taking us along the whole process. You had a great campaign and will continue to inspire many
I’m so disappointed in how Canadians voted. Thanks for working hard and staying positive. Will stay subscribed, got any intentions of uploading green tech videos?
Yup! I'm not sure how this RUclips channel will evolve, but I really enjoyed making content for it - so stay tuned!
Hey Phil, I'll be voting for you. Good Luck. Canada needs more scientists and innovators in positions of leadership to steer policy on the growing climate crisis.
Thanks so much Ethan! I really appreciate the support.
What about mentoring older people? As you stated success and productivity can happen at anytime!
Wonderful point Annie! Mentorship works both ways!
Great video Phil very authentic. Keep up the good works.
Watching the interview and it's really wonderful! However, whatever transcription tool you used is giving quite a few errors!!!
Thanks for catching, I used the built in transcription tool in Adobe Premiere Pro. Unfortunately I didn't have enough time to go through manually and caption because of the campaign. And I really wanted to get this conversation out there in a timely way because I feel it's so important!
Keep up the hard work dude.
Thanks so much!!
Fantastic information in this video. You will be helping candidates for years to come!
Then don't be a candidate. In all honesty, you really don't have the balls for political life, but since you're a GPC candidate your chances of becoming an MP are near zero. The party is imploding right now, not over environmental issues, but because a rich white anti-Semite Lawyer lost to a Jewish woman of colour in the leadership race.
Thanks so much for the honest comment. I respect your opinion and appreciate the engagement. Stay safe and be well :)
@@phildeluna_toronto Politics is a blood sport. Just look at the way your own leader is being treated by the gaggle of overpaid and under-worked "National Council" members of the GPC.
This is an absolutely brilliant and resourceful post. I'll be sharing this with my networks (particularly with candidates connected to Black CAN - formerly known as, Black Voters Matter Canada!).
Awesome thanks for sharing Petros! I hope it's useful!
That's really cool! Really helpful video!
Great video, Phil, very inspiring. Love your down to earth candour, honesty, vulnerability, obvious high intelligence. Very much respect your commitment, bringing your scientific background to the electoral politics play(ha)ground. Shields up !, dearOne, it sadly is a harsh often brutal playground. Enhance your mental health support team, such friends and allies are crucial in facing the sadly inevitable attacks within campaigning. You impress me enormously, thank you for championing Green Values publicly. Sure you will shine at candidates' debates; after which I recommend you are embraced by a caring support team, as the psychological impact of carrying the Green banner is indeed challenging. (Speaking from personal experience back in 2004.)
Hi Phil, Just wanted to drop you a note as this vlog came my way. In a nutshell, great vulnerability = great strength! The one thing we cannot do is see ourselves through others eyes... and I find you to be an inspiring STRONG candidate that makes me proud to be party of this party and a fellow candidate! Through my eyes you are inspiring. Seriously, you are running a great campaign and inspiring me... to be this open and honest with everyone is admirable. To be openly vulnerable and address these issues shows GREAT LEADERSHIP and you sold me on who you are inside your heart immediately. Just a note from a fellow candidate on the other side of the country to give you the big thumbs up on how you are showing up. We are a party with a lot of heart and it takes a lot of heart to step up to be a candidate (I know) and the one thing we can do is cheer each other on and forge ahead! Your video, through my eyes was honest, up front and inspiring because you holding to your truth and integrity and you are not afraid to show it. To own and embody the full ability to be vulnerable appears to others as "great strength". And by the way, you are running an amazing campaign... and you gave me a lot of ideas.
Thank you so much Mike for this message. This positivity really gives me strength! Good luck on your campaign and I hope we get a chance to work more closely together!
Phil, so appreciate you putting that video together and sharing info on the tools you are using. Amazing too how much info you packed into that video. Bon route!
Thanks so much for watching! I'm glad it was useful!
This is what Canada needs, more politicians talking about things.
just created a playlist, tech stack | grassroots fertilizer, featuring your recent post. yay for sure!
Thanks for this stack of info about the basic stack for grassroots campaigning with the big parties (big boys?). Did I hear that you're campaign is set up at 72 Wellesley East? But really this is a highly useful video!
Thanks so much! I'm glad you found it useful. 72 Wellesley is where Annamie Paul's campaign office is
Hey Phil 👋. You're doing a great job. Can only thing you can focus on is what you can control. Twitter especially can be really brutal. Plenty of political nerds, especially in the NDP, who get off on the idea of putting candidates in the Green Party down. It seems the NDP candidate in your riding decided to punch down on you as a green candidate when her focus should be going after the incumbent... The fact she deleted tells me she knows it was cowardly uploading the picture of your door hangers. Ever find yourself in a pickle on twitter send me a DM.
Thanks so much Craig for the encouragement, it really means a lot to me! This entire journey has been a real learning experience. I also have to remember that social media isn't the real world, and what matters most is talking to my neighbours door to door. People have lots of courage behind a keyboard.
Why would you be proud of so called Canada? One of the chants there was "No pride in genocide". We're you really there to support? Cuz Canada is still committing genocide.
Annamie's so cool!
Frank Perez was arrested on July 5th, 2021 on the charge of Hate Crimes, for painting red hand prints outside a catholic church in an attempt to bring awareness and to honor the more than 4,000 bodies of Indigenous Children that have recently been discovered. Frank is not only a supporter of justice for these children, he is also a Native. Frank is a registered member of the Crow Tribe located in Montana. Frank's own family, his Grandfather, his Mother and her siblings were also forced to attend similar schools here in the U.S., one of them being the Carlisle Indian School. Those family members were subjected to physical, emotional, and other forms of abuse. the schools goal was to assimilate and destroy their Indigenous culture and language. -Frank did not injure any person or destroy any property during his protest. -The paint Frank used was a water based acrylic paint that did not cause any permanent damage. -The church was closed and was not conducting any services the day that he chose to protest. -Frank is being held on $50,000 bail. -He requires only $5,000 to post bail with a bondsman so that he may return to his family and begin work on his legal defense. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. My daughter was a solo hoop dancer. It was an emotional day for my family as a residential school survivor.
Thank you so much Sarah for watching this video. There's so much work still to be done. If you'd ever like to contact me you can do so at phil.deluna@greenparty.ca
Celebrating Canada day is damaging to indigenous communities.
Canada is committing genocide.
Enjoyed this video Phil. It’s a challenge but we need to hold two thoughts in our heads simultaneously: I am a proud Canadian who loves this country, and also we need to recognize and reconcile past injustices that happened here. An important time to reflect.
Thanks for watching Dan! I couldn't agree more.
Hey Phil, I really appreciate that you are vlogging your journey into politics. As you are intending, I think your videos will be a really helpful resource for future individuals wanting to pursue politics.
Thanks so much Jason! I'm glad you're finding them useful. Not only does it help others, but I find it helps me as a creative and mental outlet!
"Having indigenous friends is the most important thing" such a neat perspective, Dakota! A few of my best friends are from other countries and I have learned SO much just by hanging out with them and naturally learning about their lives and families.
Did you get a dog yet?!
Working on it! For now I'm dog sitting my friend's pupper!
I am already such a fan and supporter!!!! Looking forward to seeing your journey!!!
Way to go, Phil! You have my support!
