I made the mistake of removing a coil spring on a '69 Lincoln MK III using a floor jack under the lower control arm. At the time I figured I would gently let the jack down and the spring would drop out. Hell no! little did I know those cars had one of the highest spring compression rates ever on a passenger car. once I turned the handle on the floor jack, the force kicked the jack out pushed the lower control arm out of the way the 40lb spring shot out instantaneously like a bullet hit the floor and went flying past me. Absolutely could have killed me. Sharing my experience from my youth get a spring compressor tool don't even think about not using one. Coil springs are serious business have a professional mechanic do it if possible .
