Honda GL1800 SC47... Problem with the 6 mm Allen bolt at the bottom of the right fork; the female piece in the tube turns with the bolt. First, could not remove the bolt without special tools. Second, could not tighten the bolt. I had to adapt the parts inside the tube to solve the problem. This is what I did.
Honda Goldwing Windshield Vent Repair

The lever/latch stopped working. In this video, you can see how the vent is assembled. A ball bearing of the right size "may" be better than the carter-pin idea however 1. find one the right size and 2. Since the lever has freeplay you run the risk of losing the ball bearing. The stem of the carter pin runs down inside the spring, it can not come out.

At the start of the video there's a cap on the black leaver, pop it out to access the screw, it's come loose, I had the same thing happened to mine, but I didn't loose the small ball bearing

I bought a 1985 Goldwing limited edition (fuel injected) a month ago from a guy who had driven it from Seattle to Tucson. I have had several GWs my favorite was the 1984 GW standard, not a winabago and 150 lbs lighter. As I started out into some very lite traffic I shifted up to 3rd and got a terrifying wobble. It was very windy and I had hit a 4 in. Raised ashalt driveway in order to get out of my mh park. The stem bearings seems ok with no detent at all. My main question is could a bad u-joint cause a wobble like I experienced???

Sorry about the late response I was gone for 7 weeks... I would say yes... but I do not think that such a bump would affect/damage a U-Joint. You can inspect the U-Joint by pushing back the rubber boot covering it and checking for free-play. If you feel the wobble/vibrating mainly in the steering/handlebars I do not think it could be the U-Joint... If you feel it coming from under you/motor area then I would consider the U-Joint as a possibility. Wobble or a vibration? A wobble leads me to think bent rim ... U-Join is more like a vibration. Please note that I am not a trained mechanic.

Mark: Great video. Recently had to find another final drive, since shock bracket on the final drive was broken. Found another drive and trying to put it on the rear wheel, but it doesn't seem to want to seat properly. The plastic dust seal isn't going down far enough. Checked all the parts for fitment and seems OK. Just won't cover the delicate edge you mentioned as breaking easy. Any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong?

Don, I am sorry that I am so late... I was gone for 7 weeks. I assume you have already solved your problem. That was three years ago and now I have a GL1800... so I am trying to remember. ;-) I do remember that it was a tight squeeze and that I was moving the tire and pushing on the U-Joint to move the final drive to the rear and pushing on the back of the final drive to move toward the front to get it to sit properly.

If you twist out rear shocks bottom bolts, swing arm will drop and you be able pull out rear wheel shaft.
