The Optispan Podcast with Matt Kaeberlein
США
Добавлен 4 апр 2013
Optispan is a vision for what health should be.
The typical person gives up 10-20 years of quality life in exchange for disability, frailty, and early death. We call this "the lost decade". Time that should be spent with loved ones doing the activities you enjoy are instead spent suffering from multiple diseases and taking a cabinet full of medications that probably do as much harm as good.
We believe that the current practice of medicine is disease care, not health care. We believe that everyone can get closer to their own optimal healthspan.
Join us on a journey of discovery as we explore the science of longevity and optimal healthspan ("Optispan"). The journey is the reward.
We hope you find this content valuable, join by subscribing to the channel, and come back often. More importantly, we hope that you apply what you learn here to recover your lost decade, and perhaps much more.

Enjoyed the discussion Found it to be very interesting. Thank you for giving me the opportunity.
WOW that went a whole different way than I thought it was going. though this was a militia ad
You forgot the biggest one: Join a community chorus! It has very well-documented physical and mental health benefits. [I run 3 of them here in MA, and I know this first-hand.]
Great advice, thanks.
My first intro to Optispan, great stuff guys
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you for the kind words.
Not crazy about your title. We’re not keeping people sick longer. We are keeping people that become sick, alive longer. Nobody on the front lines of healthcare wants people to stay sick. The fix is sociological and governmental. Don’t blame healthcare workers, when it’s the insurance companies that decide only reactive care will be paid for.
I have more than ten years of chronic pain and depression, I don't do anything in my life, and in fact what I dream about every day is to die, I can't take so much suffering anymore, I suffer 24 hours with pain and pain every day What's going on is getting worse, this damn depression is destroying me little by little, sometimes I get so depressed that I spend up to a month without taking a shower, I have to cut my hair because it turns into scratches, I don't believe in medication or treatments for it. My depression, chronic pain is the only thing that my pain management says and that I have to get used to living with pain, I wanted how someone lives with pain because until today in more than 10 years I haven't learned anything about how to live with pain, Because oxycodone and morphine sometimes don't take away my pain, and the pain I felt in my soul has no cure, only death can cure me.
Currently reading Outlive and getting really into longevity / feeling good now and throughout my life. Also I love Dr. Mike and will watch every single reaction to his videos that you post.
Dude the guy on the right looks so much like my cousin wth is going on
Haha! I’m Norwegian and British. Maybe your cousin has a similar background. - Nick
But it does not show you how much energy you use. So useless if you don't process all the data . And in the end it is just too much for average Joe.
I would like to see differential analysis between young and old individuals with a focus to optimize one biomarker a reasonable amount and then having made some improvement, move onto another biomarker and repeat as a way to quickly survey the impact of individual contributions towards the degradation that happens with aging.
Believe arterial and cancer focus Should change into the scourge : OBESITY, 7 outa 10, obese 4 10 Fat Food, big Food, alcohol And toxic everything, plastics
You're Best video, forward thinking
Even my home cooked multi agent system can quickly detect weak spots in blood markers & routines. I imagine in a few years it's going to be the standard for anyone who wants to live longer. P.S. in the last Attia + Miller episode they were talking about protein markers of aging in mice (not methylation). Any new info on that?
I'm interested in an opinion regarding omega-3 fish oil pills.
Love listening to this podcast before going to sleep. No bullshit, no sensationalism, no pandering. Just pure honest science.
Toss the Ama's and profit oriented STD of care!
You’re showing some ignorance. The AMA is a physician group. These days, doctors have little control over “profit”. Costs are determined by insurance companies and Medical care companies run by administrators.
Very accurate pointed out. I think we are still quite far from 4.0 . And do not see that the medical and technological advances will be so accurate that we will ever get to 5.0 , The human body and all its issues are way beyond our measuring and analysis possibilities . The question is also there if the Pharmaceutical Industry wants us to get there. There is way too much cash to be generated for Big Pharma with sick people that are being experimented on with expensive ..non working ... medicines than on healthy individuals .
Attia is great. You are the best! I've seen data that having a pet, usually a dog -- but there are others -- improves healthspan, lifespan, and happiness. I'd be interested in seeing that effect quantified.
As always informative and in a way challenging--- keep going and thank you!!
First of all thanks for making this reaction video.. really helps to hear directly from the horse’s mouth.. However, it just worries me that this is the just an example of the Rapamycin Gang vs Resveretrol-NMN gang arguing!! Peter Attia and Matt Kaemberlin are gung ho on Rapa so potentially they have a motive to be against other CR memdics !! Also it just confuses me that Peter Attia sings songs about one stuff and then realizes that it’s actually toxic.. happened with metformin!! And vice versa with ozempic where he initially was against it and now he’s in the maybe zone!! It would be the joke of the century if it turns out that Rapa is useless as well!!
I love this distinction and think its critical to communicate this to guide where we invest our time and resources for research and development. Great video!!
Thank you, we are glad you found it worthwhile! - Tara
On the subject of continuing incremental improvement in healthspan, I am a boomer (72) and an active personal trainer and I see a tepid at best (generally) commitment to improving in either the sick or healthy in the aging boomer population. LOTS of talk on how to get healthy but sadly very little consistent application...As attributed to Henry Ford:'If you think you can ...you can.If you think you can't, you can't.'We are really short a shift in societal mindset.I talk to younger friends in gerontology who are dealing with mind numbing levels of non compliance and effort in clients and caregivers waiting for a medical magic wand to make them better.
Matt K is one of the few people in healthspace I trust 100%. Never hypes anything. Says it as it is.
Thanks, this means a lot! - Tara
Love this format!!
The exceptions to the free radical theory of aging were explained by differences in membrane composition. Interventions that lengthen lifespan and slow aging like CR alter membrane composition. It is likely that CR mimetics, and molecules that increase during CR might do the same and slow aging. Even in organisms that live centuries the membrane changes hold
"I like this guy."
I dont think we have maxed out the easy stuff at all. Yes theres sanitation and antibiotics. But who the heck is eating beans every day and avoiding meat ? Who is eating two pounds of fruit and veg every day ? We have a longevity intelligensia who are obsessed with animal products and exercise and hardly entertain the basics
Thanks
Interesting stuff and we don't know if we will be alive by 2040 😂
the AI overlords taking over and curing everything is what he was referencing. he talks about it in conversation with chris williamson
I see his did a full episode on this on his personal channel. I’m going to watch it and see if he touches on longevity. If so, we will react to it. - Nick
@@optispan they get lost in the weeds on it a bit in the interview to the point where mike starts laughing because he is out of his depth on that particular topic.
The bottom line, invest into: - social network - personal health - anti aging biology
Dr. Jon Berner, try to stop saying "Right!" or Right?" after you finish a sentence. Lots of speakers these days tend to say that automatically, but it's confusing every time I hear it. Are you asking me if it's right or are you exclaiming that it's right? It just gets in the way when I'm trying to understand what you're saying. On the other hand, it's possible that my former English teachers were just too strict which has made me too analytical when listening speakers.
Please do an episode on the reasons the USA hasn’t kept up with the top 10 countries.
That's a general problem with compounds of which the patents have expired and which could be interesting for off label applications. Clinical trials costs millions, and if the patent is expired, no money to be made. This is where public funding would actually be useful.
What is Rapamycin?
I’d be interested in how they can prevent the immune suppression that comes with a dosage of rapamycin.
I’m not looking for radical life extension, when I go I wanna be mid 80’s on hike in the high mtns or the desert not in some chemo center or hospice.
Speculating on any percentage of the population reaching 150-years, shows how easy it is to be mis-led by extrapolating from current data trends. The absolute limit for human life expectancy is defined by the Hayflick limit of cell devision. That is 124/125 years max, without some “radical” interventions such as re-setting chromosome telomere length, to name only one.
I think 50 years ago the new Moonshot was curing cancer inside a decade. It didn't happen and we've put multiple moonshots into this. My feeling is that delaying ageing to any noticeable extent is a similarly futile endeavour. Even extending healthspan is limited I think it can't do much more than give us another 20y max, ok this is great, but you still get accelerated decrepitude in your 90's, no joke at all.
Seems to be that the hard limit is 120years, especially if you believe Jeanne Calment's claim was fraudulent. What's interesting is that this is limit given in the book of Genesis. How could they have known this, all those thousands of years ago, pre antibiotics etc?
Why is it not emphasized more in your discussion or the paper the huge disparity in life expectancy across the income distribution. When the claim is made that it would be 'very hard' to raise US life expectancy by just one year, you can just point to the fact that there is a 10 year life expectancy difference between the top and bottom earners.
In terms of geroscience, wouldn't it be better to look at the rates of change in lifespans for people who live to be at least 65 years old (or at least to 60 years old)? In that way, researchers can remove the negative effects on average lifespan that come from individuals who die prematurely--generally from non-age-related conditions? By doing that, wouldn't researchers be able to better measure any future intervention's impact on the aging process itself?
Excellent exchange of honest educated perspectives.
Shutting down the dog aging project in the middle of the project, is a NATIONAL DISGRACE. How many people could have benefited if we had the results / information?
I tried ketamine years ago and it was amazing. Once we clean house at the FDA and the other alphabets I'm hearing low dose psychedelics and many kinds of new approaches that were shut down by the FDA will be history. Is Doctor is right on!
I'm old, It is not fun. Are you going to make companion animals live longer? Fix cancer and bad knees? Poverty? I think I've seen this movie before, and it did not end well!
The idea would be to slow aging rather than just make the old live longer. I agree if the quality of life sucks then why bother.
This study examined life expectancy at the population level. Many of us are interested in the potential for Radical Life Extension for individuals willing to make significant lifestyle changes, such as altering diet, exercise, and sleep habits, taking supplements, and adopting other practices to extend lifespan and healthspan. For example, C. elegans' average lifespan has remained unchanged for centuries, even though experiments have shown specific changes that can extend it by up to 50%. This raises the question: For those of us willing to make significant lifestyle changes, what are the chances of extending our lifespan and health span by decades?
Artificial intelligence needs to crack this code in humans. Worms and mice provide proof of concept, but humans are way more complex. I do think Matt is way too conservative, but he has to be for his reputation if he wants to stay in academia - and in fact he apparently got frustrated and recently founded a company, Optispan. Academia is just not innovation-focused.
Chinese Daoists Qi Gong tells for 5000 years 150 years would be no problem. Read the Bible. After getting younger every day on carnivore and qi gong with God on my side I know it is the truth
For him being an anti aging expert he looks like an unhealthy old skeleton.
When you have knowledge without wisdom and are pretty is the RUclips sweet spot.
