My Experience with LMNT (spoiler alert: not pleasant)

I decided to post my experience using LMNT because I've always felt like I have the unpopular opinion of not liking this product and having a bad experience with it. If you have tried this product and had a good or bad experience, please share in the comments. I'd love to hear how this went for you! Thanks for watching!
Creating a (mostly) Healthy Meal Plan for a Backpacking Trip

This is how I walk through creating a mostly healthy meal plan when I'm going on a multi-day backpacking trip. Eating healthy on trail is important to me, and I feel my best when I put effort into having healthier options with minimal unhealthy food. Obviously not every item is considered healthy, but this works for me and helps me not have full blown sugar cravings and binging when getting off...
How to Prevent Hip Belt Bruising

I finally found a solid solution to all the bruising and rubbing and welts created on my hips from the Osprey Aura hip belts. 4th of July day hike in 100* weather - alone on the trail, just how we like it
There's another youtuber whose pack (empty) is 5.5 pounds, but he said it's so comfortable that it feels like it's much lighter. Comfort is key.
Yes! That's exactly how I feel about my Aura! I obviously don't want my pack to be 30+ pounds with everything loaded up, BUT even when it's close to that weight, it feels so light on my back. Thanks for commenting!
You do you girl. I appreciate your transparency. Honestly, I'm so sick and tired of the gear head "influencers" on YT that make you feel like you have to have the latest, greatest, lightest, most popular piece of gear that nobody can afford simply because they got it for free. Thank you for keeping it real.
I really appreciate your comment, thank you! I very much agree, and I can't keep up with the "hiking Joneses" - if I tried to I would never be happy with my gear and I would also be broke. Thanks again ☺
Thanks for the tip!
Love all the ideas. There are so many more options now. You're prepared and will be good to go for your thru hike. Keep shining bright.
Thank you! ☺
I completely agree. It's being really honest and experiencing shakedown hikes to know what you need, don't need or prefer to have comfort wise. The things that have helped me stay on budget in order to get lighter gear was patience. I'll wait for items to be put on sale due to overstock or holidays. There are budget friendly places for used gear that it's not necessary for it to be new. In the end, you're not asking anyone to carry your pack. So, you do what you have to do and keep shining bright.
Absolutely agree and I love this, thank you! Patience has started to be a big one for me. When I first got the ultralight itch, I basically blew a bunch of my savings on gear. Which was really a bad idea because if I had been patient, I would have realized there are other things that are much cheaper that I would have probably preferred. But you live and learn, and that's part of the whole point. Thanks for watching, and I appreciate your comment ☺
It's true, there is a lot of hype on the ultralight. Ya gotta be comfortable doing what you are doing. No one else is carrying your pack for you. I use a half of a sham-wow cloth (used for cleaning cars) which is really absorbent and I fold it and place it against my skin and the small of my back and that collects the sweat that would want to run down to my crack. I can tell you it is no bueno when your nether-regions get rashy while on a backpack. So I use this absorbent rag to collect the "Jeff-Juice". I know that's gross but I think you've been backpacking long enough to know what I'm talking about. Thanks for sharing! I never got to Ultralight status either and I could care less, There has to be comfort out there otherwise why do it?
Yes! Ok thanks for sharing actually because, yes even though it's a not fun topic, that is exactly what has happened before - rash. I was actually wondering if something like that would work! I'm glad I took the year to really give it a good try because now I am even more happy with my non-ultralight gear. Thanks for watching!
You've got it figured out. If you have any troubles when you are out on trail may I suggest you look at ULA packs. They have the best hip belts in the business in my opinion and you won't be sorry. I know you'll see many of them on CDT for sure. I have the Circuit in robic black and the Ohm 2.0 in robic grey. They are bomb proof and amazingly comfortable. I got mine fitted at MountainCrossings at Neel Gap.Tell me your thoughts, you may have already tried ULA but for me they are amazing, I've never had any issues. Love your content and when do you guys leave? March? April?
Thanks for the suggestion! I have never tried out any ULA packs, but I think my dad has suggested this brand as well. I really don't know much about them, but I do know I definitely need a frame. I think I've been under the impression that they are a frameless pack brand. But I will say, part of the reason I'm going back to my Aura is because of the air flow on the back. I love the Durston Kakwa 55 but I can't stand the back sweat when it's warm (and forgot about when it's actually hot!). And thanks for following along, I appreciate it! We are heading out to the CDT in early April and planning to start mid-April. The exact date will depend on when we get our CDTC shuttle scheduled. Can't wait!!
@ the frame is minimal on the ULA Circuit and even more minimal on the Ohm 2.0 but they are very stable. Next time you’re at MountainCrossings check them out!
@@jeffs6229 I'll do that! Thanks for the recommendation!
My family and I tried it; we are not a fan. We did not like LMNT at all. I bought multiple flavors.
It sounds like many people didn’t like the taste and flavors. Did yall have any bad feelings afterward or was it more the flavor? Thanks for the input!
@@hikingwithraenot just flavor, two abdominal pain, two feeling off, one felt very sick, one almost called his doctor. We will NOT be trying again. We tried different days so it wasn't like we were eating the same thing. We were not on a keto diet while trying.
@kendramales6446 thank you, I really appreciate your input. I was wondering if I was the only one who got sick because most people were commenting about the taste. I’m sorry yall had a bad experience, but I appreciate you commenting and sharing.
You guys did great! Thanks for the intel on the BT! I will get it done in 2025 and I can't wait! Thanks for sharing! I love your videos, you are guys are awesome hiking partners! Gotta keep positive through the pain and you guys make it look easy!
I appreciate your comment! And yes some of this trail kicked major booty LOL glad you enjoyed the videos! I hope you enjoy your hike, I’ll be curious how you feel about it, it was a great but hard trail.
@@hikingwithrae Have you guys backpacked the AT - like a thru hike? I would be interested in seeing those. I am a section hiker and am up to Northern Virginia. CDT is an entirely different beast. Thanks for sharing!
@jeffs6229 my mom thru hiked the AT in 2021, but we only have a section hike on the channel. Couple weeks ago or so we did Amicalola to Unicoi Gap. And in a couple weeks from now I’ll be doing Unicoi Gap to Winding Stair Gap, so I’m excited for that!
@ awesome! Some great backpacking up there! Now is the time to be out there!
@jeffs6229 yes the weather is cooling off and it’s perfect!
idk - works well for me as a heavy sweater and I also like the taste except the unflavored one.
I’ve been using LMNT for over a year And so has my fiancé and some friends of ours, and I’ve never heard a single complaint. I just opened RUclips to your video and this is the first time I’ve ever heard anyone having an issue with it. So I’ll be interested to do a little bit of research into that, but I can’t see how you or anyone would have any negative side effects when it’s just a packet of electrolytes. It’s not going to make you feel amazing or feel bad all it does is give you back any lost electrolytes that you might not be holding onto as well if you’re in ketosis. But all of the people I know that use it are in ketosis and it helps us all greatly so maybe since you are not in ketosis, your body is holding onto electrolytes from your normal foods and just doesn’t need the extra? Or maybe something else in your body was making you feel bad on that hike? I don’t know. But having a reaction to electrolytes to me would make as much sense as having a reaction to air or water.I guess someone could in a rare case but I don’t see how a packet of salt would do that
Honestly I wish I had liked it, but every time I had it I ended up feeling sick to some degree. But it could be exactly what you mentioned. I definitely wasn’t in ketosis so maybe it was just too much for me - specifically the salt I guess? That’s what I’ve always thought it was, maybe too much salt. But I don’t have a problem with salt, so not sure. A lot of people do seem to like the product, so I don’t think it’s garbage or anything, I just had a very different experience with it. I’ve mostly had people comment sharing that they thought it was bland or didn’t like the taste. Taste didn’t bother me, just feeling nauseous wasn’t fun.
the CDT?! Whoa! That is gonna be amazing!
We can’t wait!!
The Art Loeb is a tough one for sure. I'm glad I went sobo when my buddy and I did it a few years back. Time to do it again! I love the new shelters they looked great compared to the old, creepy and bat infested ones that use to be there. The big up you guys didn't quite make it up on Day 1 was Mt. Pilot and some say the hardest up of any trail in the Southern Appalachians. Take care and thanks for sharing! You and your mom make a great team!
@@jeffs6229 thank you, I appreciate your comment! 😁 Pilot Mtn was TOUGH so if I can make it up that then I’m feeling pretty good lol. Actually we did an AT section hike after the Art Loeb and honestly it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting bc of the Art Loeb and the Bartram Trail being so difficult.
@@hikingwithrae the Bartram Trail is high on my list this coming winter. I have only done the GA section but will do all of it in early 2025. I need to find your BT videos and watch them next!
@jeffs6229 we loved it! We did it southbound and stopped in Franklin for a town visit and resupply. I would do that trail again but next time northbound.
I find LMNT simply 🤢😅 Switched to liquid IV and have been very happy since.
There definitely seems to be a consensus here about liquid IV being the better choice! I’ll have to try this out!
@hikingwithrae I like the passion fruit the most. That's really good
You have bagels, you have peanut butter, try adding salami instead of something sweet, believe it or not but PB & salami is delicious
Now that is a combo I have never heard of!
I tried LMNT because of the hype but only on long hikes. I could not use anything more than 1/4 a pack. Even using that low amount, it was not working for me. I've tried other brands and had no problems. So, you are not the only one. We gotta go with what works for us on trail. Hope you have many happy trails ahead.
Thanks for the comment and input! If you only go by what people online say, you’d think you were the only one who felt this way lol (or at least I was thinking that). Thank you 😊
Always sounded like BS to me. I just assumed everybody was collecting a fat check
That’s what my mom always said lol. When I used this on trail and felt sick she said all those people are lying 😂
LMNT was too bland to me. I prefer Liquid IV since it can be bought in stores and also online if need be. LMNT is perfect for my wife, she hates the taste of most of the Liquid IV. Plus Liquid IV is what my EMS agency and our local volunteer fire departments use on a regular basis.
Based on that, I would much rather use Liquid IV, as well then. So far I’ve been using Nuun quite a bit, and I don’t have any bad or weird reactions to it.
@hikingwithrae I haven't tried Nuun yet. I did try Scratch and it was even blander than LMNT. I'm always on the lookout to try new things.
@robynroamsoutdoors I like nuun because it has a variety of flavors and it gets kind of fizzy at first. You can get a variety pack on Amazon for not too much.
@hikingwithrae I think my local running shop may carry it. I'll give it a shot. I'll probably like it and then they stop carrying it like they did with the Stinger waffles and Clif Blok gummies.
@ LOL I also like those Clif Bloks! But goodness gracious they are expensive!
I like milk & cereal for breakfast, usually 1 cup cereal + 1/4 cup NIdo (powdered milk) + water, shake, instant milk & cereal. Love to use those 2.5oz bacon packets with ramen, 3 packets grits, or 3/4 cup Instant Mash potatoes. For snacks like 1 pound mixed nuts + 8 oz raisins mixed it
That’s a great, dense, and simple meal plan! Bacon packets with ramen sounds great!
@hikingwithrae you have to break up Ramen into small pieces B4 you cook it so bacon pieces will mix, this allow eating Ramen with a spoon. You could add 1/2 pack of Pioneer Country Gravy mix instead.of seasoning packet then becomes a substitute Biscuits & Gravy
I have to try this! Especially with the gravy, I’m really curious how that would turn out
I don’t mind LMNT, but I don’t use any mixes or flavored drinks when overnighting in bear territory. I usually hike alone and am paranoid about attracting bears. I use the sodium/electrolyte tablets sold by REI. Much cheaper than any of the supplement mixes. And forget about getting the smell out of plastic bottles after using mixed.
I used to be more concerned about this (and still am to a certain degree), but I have everything in opsak bags which hold in smell really well. But I’ll have to check out those tablets because I like that idea a lot. The electrolytes can get pricey.
@@hikingwithrae They are actually capsules, "SaltStick Electrolyte Caps". I do use the "Smelly Proof" ziplock bags as much as possible, but big plastic bottles tainted with Gatorade smell takes up a lot of space.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Do other hydration products have the same results?
Not that I have found. I've used Nuun with no issues (several different flavors too). I've also used off brand single electrolyte powders from the grocery store with no issue. Which is why I was so confused why this one always had this effect.
@@hikingwithrae Interesting, for sure!
LMNT turned me into a newt! But….you know…..I got better.
I cannot stand it. I prefer liquid IV or just Gatorade
I haven't tried Liquid IV, but I'll have to try that. I've been using Nuun, and I've really enjoyed it. Great flavor and no weird after effects. Thanks for the comment!
@ I got a huge pack of Liquid IV at Costco.
For me, I can’t handle the flavor. I prefer Redmond Relyte. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Thanks for the comment. I'll have to look into Redmond Relyte because I do use their salt and it's great!
Looks like you will be well fed. I wish I liked TVP. I'm mostly vegan but I do not like the texture of TVP, tempeh or tofu. I keep trying to like it. Maybe I will test your recipe. I think the addition of the cashews might be key - with the added crunch I might can get past the TVP texture. I struggle with getting enough protein on trail. You can only eat so many nuts!
I think I've been ok with the TVP because I've only ever eaten it mixed in with meals like these (rice, TVP, bell pepper). All being about the same size in individual pieces, and then after I add the hot sauces and lime powder, I don't even notice. And even though I'm not vegan, I agree - only so many nuts and nut butters for more protein! I tend to eat more vegan style on trail because it's generally cheaper and cleaner. The freeze dried meals are just way too expensive!
I struggle with what to eat on every trip. On my hike of the Tahoe Rim Trail (175 miles, 9 days) in September I packed 5 days of food and resupplied in Tahoe City at the grocery store (very poor selection). I went without a stove and packed about 2700 calories per day with slight variations of : Summer Sausage or Spam singles, Jack Link's beef & Cheese or Beef Jerky, Nut-Thins, Skippy PB packets, Complete cookie and trail mix. The 5 day resupply was probably around 3000 calories (although I couldn't choke it down): Salami, some off brand nut-crackers, 2 different flavors of Clif Builders minis and trail mix. 🤮
I like the idea of not having to cook or cold soak any of my food, but I can't think of enough variety for me to handle that for longer than a day hike or overnight lol. I can't get with the spam, I know a lot of people use that as an option, but I really hate spam. I do like those Complete Cookies, but I also used to call them chemical cookies because sometimes they have an odd chemical taste LOL. Do you take your stove now or stick with non cook food items?
@@hikingwithrae I try to be flexible and I'm always down with trying new things (when it comes to food). When bringing food that is ready to eat I could load my hip belt pockets full of a whole days ration and eat on the trail. It can save a bit of time (although I feel that I really should take more breaks), but also allows you to finish dinner well before getting to camp(for bear safety). On my hike of the Centennial trail (125 miles, 6 days) I ate granola with dried fruit and powdered milk for breakfast. Something grab and go for lunch like tortillas with PB and honey or summer sausage and cheese. Dinners were a mix of commercial freeze-dried meals you make with boiling water and freeze dried meals you can cold soak. I recommend the Southwest Corn and Black Bean Salad from Packit Gourmet. I found the flavor to be complex and a cool treat for the 90°+ temperatures.
I hope the gel doesn’t leak or bust after awhile. Are they heavy? I used knee football pads for an issue. Lightweight foam but that looks good. Keep us updated.😊❤
I was wondering about the possibility of melting if it was super hot, but the gel is solid so I don't think it would leak or bust. However, I will definitely provide an update after I use them on my next trip for 5 days!
I thought we were going to be gear soul mates (danner 2650 lover too)….i have the exact bag you ordered (new version). I really like it. The hip belts have opened up some over a few uses. I am not doing thru hikes like you, but the aura has worked really well for the short hikes I do. For me, the sturdy hip belts help me carry the weight better. I do say I wish they had more options on the sizing. By the chart, I was small on torso length but I’m a size large range pants and the hip belt was digging into me. The m/l works but I had to really work on the other adjustments on the back to get it to work.
Well we both still like the Aura, so that’s pretty close to gear soul mates lol. I really wanted to like the new one, but I think it really came down to the sizing for me. It fit weird but I knew the M/L would be too big for me. But the torso on the XS/S wasn’t tall enough and I think that’s why it felt weird to me. Did your hip belt feel like it was angled in towards your belly when you first used it? That part felt odd to me too. I wish they had a S/M option too!
@@hikingwithrae I did go try these on in person at a Mast General store and had their outdoor person help me out - so I got to try both sizes in person. The XS/S hip belt was digging into the side of my waist right underneath my rib cage, even pushing into that area - so maybe the same experience as you feeling like it was angled in perhaps. I knew there was no way that would work. The M/L waist will work for me as I probably have more to work with in that area. The area that's probably still a little big for me is up in the upper area/shoulder area. I have to be careful about how I pack the brain and make sure it isn't too tall and hitting my head weird. The xs/s felt better for me in the shoulder/head part. I'm talking myself out of liking this pack right now lol :) Honestly, I think the perfect fit for me would have been a M/L hip belt with XS/S frame/torso length. And it's sounding like you are in the same situation but opposite - longer bag with smaller hip belt? Another factor is how stiff the hip belts are with this bag and how hard that makes it to get on initially. It would have thrown me, but the person who helped me at Mast had the men's version of the bag and said that they loosed up after a few uses, which I also have found true -so his advice did help reassure me there. The bigger size truly does work fine for what I do right now - i just have to take time to adjust it every trip and make sure it feels good before i take off.
@@natashalee6959 I think this description is exactly what it is with the sizing! And this is why I wish they either still had their previous sizing options OR they had a third size in the middle of these two. My torso should technically be ok for the XS/S but it was right on the line of not being comfy. Oh well. I definitely do think that pack is more comfy though in the hip belt and shoulder straps, but if it felt weird on me without all my gear, I don't see it being better with even more gear. BUT I got some gel cushions for the old Aura (to use under the help belt against my hip bones), and now I think it's going to be perfect! I did a short walk this morning with it, and it was great. Love the input and thoughts on this pack, thanks!
Actually I take back the torso comment I made - the XS/S torso is supposed to go to 17" and I am sure I am 17.5". I wouldnt think that would be a big deal, but perhaps it was!
Great little vacation town. I like the Murphy, NC area for a lot of the same reasons. I watched your AT videos, which are my vicarious hike in the mountains. 😁 Take care.
Thanks for watching 😁 and there are so many NC mountain towns that are wonderful to visit!
Keep us posted on how this works. I'm concerned it will be bothersome to have to fiddle with the gel pads every time you take a potty break. If you could attach them to the hip belt that might be more convenient. Perhaps you intend to do that after verifying they work for you.
Very understandable and yes I will keep in mind to provide updates! I will say, when me and my mom were using the foam ones I never attached them. But when my boyfriend got some, he figured out a way to attach them with some string so he didn’t have to worry about that. I don’t know if the gel ones could be attached but I have a hike coming up in a couple of weeks and I will see how it goes!
Just an aside. The pinball museum was closed when we went by. My nickname, back in the day, was "Pinball Jim". I saw from your video they had "Kiss", if they had "Gorgon" it would have been the zzznt. That and Foosball was my game. Oh ya,, they were doing the Jimmy Stewart decor, and their favorite movie "Harvey" at The Henderson. Just a great town, looking forward to returning!
Dang too bad yall missed out on the pinball museum. It was one of the highlights because it was so different a neat little place.
@McBlamin 0 seconds ago I know it's all about personal preference. I'm using the Ospry Exos 58. I found I don't need the "brain". I know it's not the lightest backpack, but dang! it is surely comfortable!!! I haven't talked myself into cutting off all the extra flaps, I guess I should. My pack, including a contractor's plastic bag for an inner liner and no brain weighs 2.87 lbs. My full load has been about 18.6 Lbs base weight (includes a bear cannister). I AM going to do some winter hiking so my base weight will increase. But I sure am open to any suggestions for reducing weight!
I swear, you're gonna think I'm messing with you, but we (my wife and I) just stayed there a little while back (pre Helene). We stayed at "The Henderson" for a couple nights. Walked downtown and checked out a few spots. Ending up going to a dive on Main St (The Dugout maybe?) things were a little fuzzy, but we watched Karaoke and played Keno, and drank way too much (no driving!) Ending up winning BIG, had to go to another place the next day to cash out. Ate at Flanagan's right before they closed down for the night. This was all on a weekday night, I hear it gets pretty crowded on the weekends. It's a beautiful little town.
That sounds similar to our trip! We really enjoyed being able to walk everywhere instead of driving. Didn’t have to worry about alcohol being a factor. It was a great little town trip. The Henderson was great!
Accents. My wife thinks "Kentucky" like her cousins. My guess is Tennessee or north Georgia. Are either of us right?
😂 you are very close! Yes on the North Georgia, but we only lived there until I was 8. Then we moved to South Carolina. So a mix of both of those I suppose. But I get the north Georgia question many times.
Hey, thats cool. I hope you will make daily videos. I will be watching from Germany. Many greetings, and all the best for your preparations, Matthias
Thank you! Yes I plan to make daily videos!
Sizing, No doubt about that, I have an Atomos AG 50 Medium which fits well. Except that I have to tighten the waist belt all the way so I feel you there. Should probably cut that so that it doesn't stick out. I would do some strap modifications if I didn't have another pack to use. I wonder if the way they've removed the trampoline extensions with the hip strap allowed them to have a greater freedom in sizing but I know the previous gen Exos didn't have the tramp wings and still had single sizings so who knows? Hip belt, I haven't tried on the newer one but wonder if it easier to get into it. The old ones got a memory of where it wants to be so I have to wiggle myself into it using my small waist cause it likes to fold in before I get my hip through the gap. This is one of my biggest complaints with it which I can accept as a compromise for a better hip load distribution. The hip belt and how it feels on the hips, different people different tastes. Glad to hear it has bigger hip belt pockets. I must have an even older version of you pack since mine has the full mesh back. Side pockets, indifferent about it. Bottom access sleeping bag zipper! Love mine for that. Rain cover pocket, I don't get why a pack needs to come with this? You already have a brain, bladder pocket, hipbelt pockets, side pockets etc. Just seems unnecessary to have. I've personally never used the rain cover on one of my other packs that I have. If I were to store a rain cover I'd find a spot pretty easily. Side-zipper. Agreed, bottom zipper only is best. Not sure what is up with the zipper to access the frame right above the bladder pocket is for? Make it velcro for all I care, never going to touch that. Floating lid, isn't the new cover the flapjack cover? And you also have the red strap thing which you've removed. That is how I attach my pad. Shoulder straps, all good points. Not sure what is up with the velcro attachment system. Why did that need to be added? Ice Axe! Is what that bungee and bottom loop is for. Even shown as such on Osprey's site. Not sure why they gave us one on each side? And then a trekking pole shoulder attachment on top of that. The two loop/bungee setup on the back should suffice, one for axe one for poles. Weight, Osprey has an AG LT version which to my understanding strips a bit of weight while still retaining the pack features unlike the exos pro. Using it on CDT. On the PCT most used gear list survey the Atmos/Aura is listed as the fifth most used pack on the PCT with the Exos at third.
Great feedback, I appreciate you taking the time to share this! The hipbelt feels the same difficulty for me to get into. I think my older one is easier only because its a little worn in at this point, but the new one I had an even harder time getting into the hip belt. Even though it is more cushiony, it is still very stiff from the AG system being attached. And you're right about the rain cover zipper pocket. I like the extra pocket down below, but I also would not use that for the rain cover. Oh and the floating lid part - my older one does have a floating lid that is removable and already removed. Because I dont use it, I didnt include it in the video. I do think the bottom side of the new pack lid is intended to be the flapjack cover, but if you wanted to hike without the lid completely, you would have no extra fabric for a small cover. My mom tried the AG LT version and didnt like it, so I didnt bother trying it out. She said that one was weird, and now I imagine the weirdness I felt with this new Aura is probably similar to how she felt that LT version was weird. But a pack being "weird" is obviously very subjective. Thanks for your comment and feedback!
If you hate normal inflatable pillows (I get neck kink) try Flextail Zero pillow which a shape similar to ergonomic pillow I have at home.
This is the second recommendation for this pillow - I need to try it out! Thank you!
Nice trip. You've inspired me to do this, hopefully within a couple months before it gets freezing a$$ cold! I did get out to Pisgah after your Art Loeb trip and got a few nights in before having to leave early to beat the arrival of Helene (I left on a Wednesday evening, before it hit in the wee hours of Friday morning). I did Ivester Gap, Shining Rock, Graveyard, Mountain to Sea, and Art Loeb, plus a few miles on a couple other trails.
That sounds great! Was it clear when you went? (although I think I remember that week being rainy)
She is a cutie!!!
She really is! She’s such a happy baby!
I just ate pecan pie and now I want a cream filled oatmeal cookie. I hope to hike that area before long. Did y’all hike this before the hurricane?😊❤
It was so good! And you should, it was amazing! We hiked after the hurricane. Not immediately after, but I was asking the shuttle driver we book with about the area and the hostel we stayed at and both said the area we wanted to do had not been affected and was fine to hike. Which really was the case, we didn’t see anything on trail that was fresh or not passable.
At the shelter where you felt it was "a little spooky", I'm glad you camped elsewhere. It's always best to trust your intuition/instincts. May have been nothing, but at the least, if you stayed you probably would've been on edge all night.
Exactly how I felt about it. I felt WAY more comfortable up the hill next to the trail.
I think the mountain your mom was asking about was Yonah Mountain. It lyes been Cleveland and Hellen. With no other mountains around it, it looks very prominent. Actually 3166’.
Thanks, that would make sense then!
Absolutely fantastic episode my friend! This section looks and feels just great! Love it
Thank you! 😊 I really appreciate your comment!
Impressive, ya'll did another 9 miles after lunch! 7:45 "This is where you and Daddy split", must be a story there? This is soo beautiful, I'm really happy there's a little bit of AT trail, not affected by Helene! Means I'll be able to give this a run late spring/early winter! I had already written this off, if it weren't for your vid, I'd would've never known. How many bird/bat spots did you get on your sleeping bags?
Oh yes I was told by our shuttle driver that all the way up through Smoky Mtns would be manageable. I’ve read comments about a good bit of blowdowns in area of NC though. But the section we did from Amicalola to Unicoi was definitely clear. I don’t think we saw anything from Helene. OH and YES - when I made that comment it was because my mom thru hiked the AT in 2021 so when she started my dad was with her for a bit.
And thankfully we exited the shelter before anything got on us. However, we did see some small black dots in the corners and after we laid down in the tent we looked up what bat poop looked like, and yep that was it. ☹️
When you said you were going to sleep in the shelter I was thinking, no no no no no! But I wasn’t thinking of bats. I was thinking of mice. Good on ya for getting out! Me? Personally I don’t think I would stay in any shelter. But that’s just me.
LOL! I definitely prefer my tent, but I was hoping to have one night experiencing a shelter. However, those bats were absolutely insane!
I'll follow along. I'm hoping to be class of 2026 on the AT.
😁
Nice hike you two! Rea… you could slow down your camera movement just a bit on your panning. Compression socks might do you good.
Thank you for the feedback! I'll slow it down going forward. I use the Darn Tough socks, which I think they say are performance compression... not sure if that's the same thing. But my feet were thankfully not swollen after this hike!
👍🏻👍🏻To both of you.
@@tommyh.8391 thanks!!
At least no one can call you an air head!
