Everyone Has A Jeff Buckley Story - Ep 9.2 Matt Johnson on Jeff Buckley
Matt is back for another talk: this time we go deep into his relationship with Jeff and why he chose to leave the band in 1996. Matt also talks about what he appreciated about Jeff Buckley as a composer and as a mentor. I also ask him some questions that our other guests had about Jeff: Was he shy? Was he worn down by the heavy emotional content of the songs? Matt always gives detailed answers, often using metaphors to get his points across. Any musician or Buckley fan will get a lot out of this candid and sometimes emotional conversation. Thanks Matt. It was honor! You are a legend!

Rachel’s Dream…When I started “Everyone Has Jeff Buckley Story” I just had a feeling Rachel Eckroth would have something amazing to contribute. And right I was. Not only has she played with Rufus Wainwright, whose version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” is almost as famous as Jeff Buckley’s, but she also has had a very deep connection with the song over the years. She shares her thoughts in our...

Surprises me too. The commenting was disabled for most of these videos. I don't think that's a good thing.

McCartney knew Tim Buckley , right? So that's probably why McCartney knew of Jeff and was fascinated by their genetic similarities. Personally, I never heard of Tim Buckley until AFTER Jeff passed away. I only ever knew Jeff Buckley as his own, individual musician without the context of his famous father. I just liked his voice, lyrics, and music for what they were, not because his father was a famous musician. Two decades later, I clicked on a RUclips video and discovered the whole story of Jeff's father being famous, but never in his childhood/life, and it made me respect the bittersweet aspect of Jeff's career and how that must have both helped, but also hurt him and his career (the constant comparisons to a man who was a stranger to him). To my knowledge, I have never heard a Tim Buckley song and, quite honestly, I'd kind of like to keep it that way. Today, all these decades later, I *wish* I had a Jeff Buckley story. I don't have many regrets in life, as I have lived a lot of my dreams/goals, but I really lament the dozens of times I could've walked out of my apartment in Manhattan, jumped on a bus going down 2nd avenue to St. Marks, and popped into Sin-e or the Knitting Factory to listen to him play. I spent so much time down there, eating brunch and dinner at Dojo, Veselka, Yafa, and Stingy Lulu's and listening to all kinds of live music at Sine, Knitting Factory, Irving Plaza, Maxwell's in Hoboken (where I lived '92-'94), et. al. Jeff Buckley just was *not* on my subjective list of people we worried about being dead in the following decade (Cobain, Stayley, Weiland, Hoon, either of the Deal sisters, et. al). There was a LONG LIST of musicians we thought would die of overdose or suicide, and Jeff Buckley simply was not on that list. Most of us were certain he'd have a long career, and just get better with time...

Just curious if you tried reaching out to Mick or Michael? I would love to hear their memories; I'm sure as everyone would. They're probably a bit hard to get a hold of though. Thank you for these interviews!

Thanks so much for this comment. There are many people I would like to interview. And obviously “Mickey and Mikey”, as Matt calls them, are at the very top. I believe that the band members have a perspective that is unique because it seems that Jeff treated them like musical equals, more or less. I would recommend you watch the 2004 documentary. They are both in there and Michael’s observations especially are excellent. I’m not sure if I will be doing anymore Buckley interviews in the near future. I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed this series. PS Ep 9.1 has bonus stuff if you listen on my Transistor site
