Hope life is finding you well brah! Have some of the older commercial guys and charter captains told you what the original otec buoy with the the two parts, one was like a big can that shot water out of it was like, and then another buoy by it??? Back in the day, it would get huge ahi schools around it, and the daytime palu ahi, drop stone fishing was just insane!!!!! Had all kine fish around it, like choke mahi, and ono and plenty marlin too!!!! When they replaced it with a regular fad, it never was as good, but it still was very productive!!! The old one used to out produce all the rest of the fads in the entire state of Hawaii annually I'm pretty sure!!! I used to fish it a lot, and continued to fish the replaced fad for years after. Had some incredible fishing out there, and plugged my boat over night a couple times, with only me out there!!! Used to hit it at the Crack of dawn, doing day trips at times, but mostly I didn't fish kona commercialy that often. It gets good some years for ahi, but then all the part time guys fish and it got really crowded with boats at night. Preferred to go find my own fish in rough water alone. Way back in the old days the spring/summer ahi runs were massive off kona side, but the price would crash, to the point it got hard to even sell them. The stories of ika shibi fishing off Hilo before WW2, and again after the war ended, of the local Japanese fishermen are just incredible in thier small sampans!!!! Heard used to have massive schools of big po' o' nui, or big eye, it was very different way back in those days and the Japanese fishermen who were already incredibly good at catching ahi, combined with the old Hawaiian fishing methods, which are so much of what has turned into how we fish today. Hawaii is so awesome with all the melting pot cultures and our kupuna going way back fishing, it's something that makes us in the islands so special and rich with history!!! So much respect for our family history's going way back in the islands, we're so blessed and culturally rich here!!! I've learned so much and have so much Aloha and respect!!!! My Grandfather used to work on a boat way back in the old days that would go into Honuapo landing, where the paniolos would swim the cattle to the boat in the ocean and then they'd be hoisted up onto the boat to travel back to Oahu!!! The old black and white photos of this are epic!!! Curious if you know of Ray Shirakawa, down Waiohinu and the old Shirakawa hotel/motel(?)??? Cool guy, and he loved fishing on his radon down that side, where I loved to fish! Haven't been in touch with him for ages, but I loved the Ka'u side and how laid back it was. Even had to renew my driver license that expired back in the early 80's and did it and the driving test at the Na'alehu police station!!! It was so small, maybe the smallest in Hawaii back then!? only a few cops!! and the families I made friends with on that side, including Pahala, that go way back for generations are lifelong friends! No ka oi!! Big island mo bettah!! Take care bruddah. D.L.

Awesome bruddah Garrick!!! Curious if you know my friend Chris Stanley for mililani Oahu? He's a really awesome bow hunter, who taught me year's ago and I bought my first Hoyt compound from him. Mostly hunts In the islands, Molokai especially, but he's one of the best I know, and also a competitive archery guy!! Of interest, my friend who lived in eastern Colorado then moved to Arizona about 15 years ago, for hunting as he's a guide and world class archery hunter. He got a north American grand slam for all the sheep species with his long bow!!!!!!!!!!! Guys so humble, but few people have done that, and his list of Boone and Crockett and pope and Young animals is world class!!!!! Eastern Colorado is where he guided me to both mule deer and whitetail of over 200pts. He's taken several over the years of both out there!!! He's gotten booners of I believe every north American big game animal with his long bow. All fair chase, except he didn't hunt brown bear in Alaska. I used to have him and his wife come stay with me on the big island many years and take them fishing and sightseeing. I made my Alaska connection in kona when a guy came to spend the winter and lived next door to me. First time I ever took him and his friend fishing, I took them on a south point trip on my Force 30, and we caught everything trolling! 25 minutes out of Honokohau we hooked a nice 400+ blue marlin and so I turned around and took it back in to drop it off, then went right back out down to ka lae. We clean sweeped 2 days in a row, and they videoed the whole trip and it was just insane! First time either he and his cousin ever went deep sea fishing and it was full on multiple strikes on mahi and ono, like 5 poles and both handlines all at once and 30- 90 lb ahi's!! It was in October, and we never saw another boat down south pt. the whole time!!!! In 2 days trolling we had 2,800 lbs!!! Lucky buggahs!!!! I was really stoked for them though!!! We had 3 more marlin in the 200 lb class too!!! My boat had two 10 ft. long fish boxes with dividers I could pull so marlin went right in the brine!!! I also had a massive Ike ma, and other fish hold too. His Father came to visit from Alaska as he wanted a big blue marlin to put on his wall, and I got him a 585 lb blue that he had done and shipped to kenai and it hangs on now. His grandsons log cabin wall!!!!! Love the guys up there and of course all the hunters I've been so blessed to meet and hunt with over the years. I loved New Zealand for hunting, and surfing and fishing too!!! The kiwis are like us in Hawaii, super Aloha and welcoming great outdoor people!!!! Africa, well, thar was just so epic it was amazing!!! I'm friends with Jim Shockey from Canada, from way back from playing water polo against him in the 70's, and he's been a super hunting friend too!!! What a life!!!! So few people really get to experience the wild outdoors. Just calling huge bugling Elk in to within 10 yards is one of the most incredible things you can ever experience!!!! What a rush!!!! Lots of years of religiously applying for tags and building up points to get to hunt in dream places, some take so many years to draw, but it's been incredible and the friendships made last a lifetime!!!! Glad to see you enjoying it and spreading the Aloha brah!!!! D.L.

Good one bruddah! You're getting lot's of people riled up when the daruma started floating. Not many fishermen ever get to see that kind of wide open bite, and they just blow their minds!!! Been knee deep in them many times over the years, and like you said, you don't know how long it's going to last!!! Actually, it never lasts wide open for that long. Before thry sound or just stop feeding. That's pretty much guaranteed, and Thats why we just yank and deck load a lot of times, cause it's only going to last for an hour or so usually! After the rush, then we get them into a brine. Brings back such good memories, the best ones were when it was all 150- 200 lb big eye biting like that. First time our dangle poles bent the aluminum pipe!!! We had to make them stronger and evolved the gear over time to handle. Mahalo for bringing back the memories of decades ago when I started getting into this kind of insans ahi fishing!!!!! Glad you're hunting the mainland brah. I hunted all over including Alaska, New Zealand and Africa, as well as Europe. It's the best!!!! Aloha D.L

@GarrickYamamoto awesome brah!!!! I was taking my Force 30 way, way out back in the 80's and early 90's, so I was blessed to see it get wild plenty times!!! It's amazing. One trip, we got to our spot, and just got slammed right away, an it was pretty much steady for about 12+ hours!!! My friend and I put 12,000 lbs on his 42 ft boat once in 18 hours. It's not every time of course, but usually you get into them really hard on an off!! Still, ika shibi, those special nights in the rough water areas off big island, when I'd get a big school of gorilla ahi and they'd float, those were special!!!! Plug the boat, and I'd usually call a good friend on the radio and tell um come over and thow the rope so they could tie off my stern. I did that for Mike Abe long time agowhen he had a smaller boat. Ne er forget those nights! Aloha

How's it brah. Just wanted to say how much I enjoy watching your fishing and hunting videos. I was born and raised on Oahu, growing up at our beach house right at Ehukai Beach/Pipeline in 1960. I've been enjoying surfing, Pipeline in particular and other incredible waves on the outer islands, since I was a kid. I grew up diving and spearfishing and Deep sea fishing, and my life has revolved around the ocean in Hawaii. Starting in 1974, I started putting my 13 ft Boston whaler on young brothers to the big island and spending my summer's in kona fishing and, going down to milolii and camping and fishing with my boat from kapua etc, having a blast!!! A fisherman named Raymond Kuahiwa (?) Raddon fv Ho'olako, befriended me, beginning a long friendship, and years later Wili Kaupiko. The list of awesome Hawaiian fishermen and captains who became great friends is long, of course many from kona/Honokohau! So my dream was to live in kona full time commercial fishing and to get my own boat capable of fishing anywhere off the big island, and doing 4-5 days and nights long trips . I had the 9th Force 30 out of the mold custom built to my specs in Hilo in the early 80's, and then I set out on the adventure of my life making my dream come true!!! I rarely fished kona commercial, rather doing south point trips, and later, far beyond, fishing all around the island. I was different from most commercial guys, because I did a lot of trolling, running 4 or 5 poles and 2 handlines and I had outriggers. Back then when commercial guys did trolling, it was usually just two bent but rods off thier raddons, as most concentrated on ahi, and did palu ahi/ Maki dog, and of course ika shibi fishing. I was fishing with a small group of full time commercial guys, like Zig Ching, Billy Wakefield, and many others, and I loved fishing off Hilo and Puna, where one morning after dropping off my fish at Hilo suisan auction, a guy named Nixon Pacheko invited me to have breakfast with him, beginning a long friendship with someone who was a real "tiger" amongst the Hilo and Pohoiki guys. I'm a born and raised local haole, but I grew up with lots of Hawaiian families so I'm just like most of us who grew up in Hawaii. But Hilo, and Pohoiki back then especially, was the wild west!!! Guys would literally shoot guns at each others boats off Pohoiki at night, because of people parking too close, or behind your boat a ways, stealing your palu trail. Later, guys would launch from Pohoiki around 3am, and sneak out running no lights and throw thier chute behind guys fishing all night paluing and catch the early morning rush off thier palu. They called them ninjas!!! These guys were not liked!!!! Anyway you probably have heard how wild it was years ago. At first I chose not to fish in the pack off Pohoiki, especially with me being haole and in a brand new flybridge Force 30!! Lot's of jealousy and bad vibes unfortunately back then. So I'd go off places near kalapana and have amazing fishing, later, after telling Nixon exactly where I was fishing, he told me about "the farm" off kehena, and Maki man pt. etc, and couldn't believe I chose such good spots being new fishing that whole side. I told him, nobody trolls commercialy!!!?? And how I loved trolling, and I would troll all the time over the years off that side with absolutely no boats anywhere in the day. I figured since the ika shibi fishing was so good on that side, that trolling would be just banging!!!! Well, it was epic!!! Amazing, how no one else would do it, but most guys fished ika shibi at night and went in and got thier ahi to suisan by 7:30am before auction. Well, I could write a book on so many incredible fishing trips and everything we see and do spending years at sea, as you know. I have spent 40+ years commercial fishing in Hawaii, from the Big island all the way up to midway island in the leeward isles. I used to bottom fish in the leeward isles back before they made it a marine sanctuary, as I was a permit holder. It's no secret now, so I can say after Mike Hines and the Leslie family fv Hanalike were fishing cross seamount way outside kona for years, I decided to start doing it!! I think back then I may have been one of the first guys to take small 30' boats outside to fish. I knew better than to go out alone, so the first trip, I asked Billy Wakefield to bring his 30 ft raddon Jaime E. and we went together. Back then we had Loran, but the old Sat Nav had come out and I had it, though nothing like today's GPS, it worked. Shortly after, I told Wakefield I wanted to fish the weather buoys!!! I'll never forget going to buoy 2, 179 NM sw of kona that first trip w/ sat nav, which sometimes has an hour or more between sat fixes, so I timed it to arrive at night hopping to see the strobe light on the buoy from a distance!! Well, we did, and the first drift by it was just wide open wit darums and 100+ big eyes and later big yellows!!!! Plugged our boats!!! The rest is history !!!! Guys like My friend Bruce Fukuda, from Hilo, and Joe Mark's of kona (a legend and great friend) Al Duart fv Midnight, a 27 force, then a custom aluminum boat etc.etc., I'm truly blessed to have been a part of such a great time to test myself while young and strong !!! All the famous Hawaiian fishing families in Kona, like the Llannes(?) Family. Kenny was a really close friend and thier famous "locknut" lure!!!! Marlin Parker and knowing George, his father was just a privilege!!! My cousin was captain Peter Hoogs (rip) fv Pamela, who was a legend as well, as kona is a world famous fishing location!!! And of course hunting!!!! The Llannes family, and thier kids were all hunters, and I know you're an avid hunter as well. I have been blessed to hunt throughout Hawaii, as well as the us mainland states and Alaska, New Zealand and Africa!! Yeah man, just wanted to say thanks bruddah, for bringing me back to decades of awesome memories spent doing what I love so very much!! Your videos are great brah, I'm 64 years old now, and living back on Oahu, But just wanted to let you know how your youtube ch. etc. have brought me a lot of enjoyment of what we share in common!!!! The green stick is a tuna secret weapon🤣🎣 i stand corrected but originated in Japan! Used for tuna! As the comments below a lot of much more knowledgeable people have responded 🤣🤙🏽 thanks for the history of the green stick and all of that makes a lot of sense

Green stick method originated from okinawan fishermen. The first "birds" used japanese locking jointery and were made from sections of post and beam construction.
