As to time to climb a mountain, it depends on if you focus on the goal (the top) which will be fast, or on the journey which will be slow. I have seen some lovely hikes in Japan, some in my own backyard around Mt. Baker, Washington. The gentleman seemed more intent on the goal than the journey, but then again he does stop to talk with fellow climbers.
Yeah if you want to do something like hiking, you need focus and determination as for Japan that would be amazing to see and the people are very polite too. It is nice to know there are good people out there which makes a change from my past as mentioned previously in a video.
Hello Shadow! Super video. What an amazing man! Love your tree and decorations for Christmas. Super detailed and lovely. Hope you are well.
Hello, Yeah I saw the video and I was like wow this would be an interesting idea for my video but yes what an amazing man to do that and thank you I usually decorate my whole house in every room, I put them up on Halloween because of the movie Nightmare before Christmas it is not a horror movie but anyway I leave them all up until 12 days after Christmas Day. I am as ok as I can be I guess.
You sound good, your comments are spot on. Love that you decorate the whole house! That is a LOT of work. Good on you. The tree, the mantle, the walls, it is a treat.
@@catherinejohnson8478yeah it takes quite a few hours as least and putting lights everywhere too with decorations but thank you 😊 glad you like it.
A few points of knowledge for you, this Highland Games is in Victoria BC which is the longest Highland Games in North America going for over 160 years The three gentlemen you were asking about are judges, this is a competition in line for the circuit to go to the world championships which this band did in 2024 and placed vary high in their grade But definitely should check out a few videos of the world pipe band championships, a few bands I can recommend is Simon Fraser university who are from around the same area as these guys (Vancouver) Inveraray and district as well as field marshal Montgomery, also should see if there are any Highland Games in your area and go one year to check it out
Oh ok, thank you for the information on that, I know the Highland Games originated in the Scottish Highlands hence the name but I did not know the World Championships were held in Canada aswell but I had a feeling they were judging the Championship, I will maybe look into them in the future, thank you for the comment much appreciated.
@@shadowfoxxiesorry for the confusion, this is just one of the North American competitions that bands do before the world championships in Glasgow
@sniper11789 no worries so like training or qualifying for the proper event in Scotland
Hi Shadow. Kind of a creepy name. Or perhaps not. After all, there is the Stone of Scone isn't there, although I'm shaky on the exact spelling of the latter. Sounds like food. I can see this place speaks to you.
The stone of scone is also known as the coronation stone but it is never in the same place, it has more direct history to England
Wasn't the Stone in one place, perhaps Scotland, but was stolen by some guys and taken elsewhere? Maybe 20-30 years ago?
Oh gad. I reread that sentence and it is all wrong. I mean the name of the rocks is a bit creepy, NOT your name. It came out wrong.
@catherinejohnson8478 it is fine, I know what you meant, thank you for clearing it up though 🙂
@@catherinejohnson8478 it was technically yes around the 1950s but I know something about the 13th Century it was originally in Scotland and something about the stone of destiny bit I may have to do a video a bit it at somepoint.
Hello Shadow! I left the last thread as getting too long, and popped up here. How creative folks were in the past: they had a need, they found a solution. Hope you had a good weekend. . . mine was busy. And it has been raining with wind. I told you we live out in the woods - this is literal. Google Maple Falls, Washington, and you will see it is lovely but far from everything. The movie Call of the Wild was made here in the 1930s. It looks like a Christmas card a lot of the time. Not too far is Mt. Baker, a very un commercial ski mountain that actually gets more snow than the big, commercial places. The mountain is also an active but sleeping volcano! I love volcanos, and had the opportunity to see, numerous times, two in Costa Rica: Poas; and gosh, forgot the name of the other. Both reeked of rotten eggs. Poas had its last eruption in about 1960 or so, the day our John Kennedy visited. Before my time. I landed in 1972, acquired a coffee farm, and worked as well as did undergraduate studies at La Universidad de Costs Rica, long before the tourists invaded and to me, ruined the place. Long story, but my time there, ten years, was magical. My home was basically in a jungle. I was in the Escuela De Lingistica but I should have been over in entomology what with a passion for insects and spiders. The offer, however, was linguistics. Now I live in a German-type woods, but I was born/reared, in the desert! Yes, Shadow, a real desert. Google El Centro, California. Hot as hell, little to recommend it back in the day. And yes, crack an egg on the sidewalk in the summer, and you can easily fry it. When I was coming up the population was about 9k. Now it is 160k. Hot, hot, hot. 116F easily in the summer. Anyway, that is all the truth and I'm sticking to it. Speaking of Eastwood, one of my favorites is Where Eagles Dare, about which his co-star Richard Burton said was crap. I adore it. Also Million Dollar Baby. He is unmistakable in his Westerns, and Dirty Harry series! He says little bit gets his point across "Man's gotta know his limits." Yep. And he's still motoring along! Amazing guy. Ok, Shadow, now after 10 pm on a Sunday night. Take good care and let me know how you are, and what videos you have planned.
Rome brought a few things to any place they invaded: roads that can still be used today ; water for baths, sewer systems, homes, encampments, and the like; a fairly good administration. Also death, total conformity, greed.
True
Wow!
My goodness. Like the Great Fire in London, as told by many including the peerless Samuel Pepys and painted 200 years later by Turner. These poor people. No central government aid, bad weather, hunger, loss of whatever they owned down to the last ratty shift or stockings. No shelter, grave wounds, zip medical care, babies and the elderly the most vulnerable. Lord have mercy. Thank you for your keen observations and comments.
Yeah it was a dark time in history but there is alot of history in countries like England
I study a few things, and one of them is military history mainly 1850-1945, with an emphasis on WWI. In 2001 I happened upon the site of the Battle of Towton, the bloodiest battle on English soil. A friend I was visiting drove by there quite casually. To him it was just another field, but to me it was neon lights, crashing music, visions of gore. No one really appreciates what is in his/her own back yard. We have the Great Chicago Fire. But few really care about it today. I am reminded of this: "If you don't know history, you don't know anything. You are a leaf that doesn't know it's part of a tree."
@@catherinejohnson8478yeah I know a fair amount of history myself but some people don't know much about any history of any kind
We in the New World, Canada to Tierra del Fuego, amuse me. We think something is "old" if it dates to 1750. REALLY old is 1500 as Spain sent Cristobal Colon in 1492 on a voyage of discovery. Yet Scotland, along with the UK goes back that far in history plus some. History is real, and everywhere you look for all of you ! How lucky!
@@catherinejohnson8478 very true the history within dates back even like say 1066 that was the Battle of Hastings back it would go further back than that too yet, we would say something that old is Centuries old or ancient but old can be anything but fairly old would be a bit more recent it depends I guess.
Old is a relative term, I suppose. We look to Jamestown as our "first settlement" in the 1600s, but forget about St. Augustine Florida, settled a century prior. The former was an English deal while the latter was Spanish. We ignore Spain and embrace England. Our collective "old" is indeed relative. But I love things, places, people with a history!
@catherinejohnson8478 Old English in general has alot of proper wording and terms but also ties into old Latin or even French words like Courgette etc.
Isn't this the truth! English, in the Germanic family, has a load of French, Latin, and a lot of words tossed in from other languages, from coffee to berserk.
@@catherinejohnson8478yeah like Cafe but it is spelt as Café not Cafe or even Aubergine etc.
Pancakes? Wonder what they are like
Depends tranditionally Shove Tuesday is a day dedicated to Pancakes, it is also known as Pancake day however these pancakes are alot bigger and traditional ones are made with lemon juice and made in a frying pan, also you toss it as high as you can (flip it with the pan) American pancakes are smaller but also known as Scotch Pancakes there is also more about pancakes.
I wish. . . . but to late for me to visit.
It's never to late, also thank you for the comment much appreciated ❤
For me it is, but bless you for your kind encouragement to travel. I am an old woman who cares for her husband who has Parkinson's dementia. I have lived a wonderful life with few regrets but if I had to name two, it would be that I should have been kinder and more caring, and that I could have learned more. Oh, the third would be I could have been more generous with the gifts I have. Thank you, though
@@catherinejohnson8478your welcome and sorry
Just noticed some geezer crawling along the ground, like he was eating grass. Hope no sheep were there.
Yeah, I think they are trying to represent Spiders or Creepy things crawling I guess
You are great! Happy H. Day to you, too! Very interesting show. Hello from Catherine in Washington. Best day to buy candy is the day after Halloween or Christmas since all is on sale. Puts the Swede on cardboard with a hand saw as you crack up laughing. Just great!
True even Easter too but we don't have Thanksgiving here so it just goes Halloween into Christmas our Christmas Markets and streets are lit up usually start the second week of November or earlier until around Early January (6th) or so and but lol at the Swede 😆
Yes, our Thanksgiving has blown a minor event in U.S. history into some sort of communal feed and friendship between the English who were starving, and the Native Americans. Shortly after this show of kindness by the Native tribes, the Americans slaughtered them, gave them European diseases, and stole whatever they wanted. But on Thanksgiving we all settle into a huge meal, then football on tv. Canada also has a sort of Thanksgiving a week or so prior to ours.. For me, I am thankful every day I draw breath. The rest is an ad campaign to sell us stuff - to goad us into buying things, AND feel guilty if we neglected a family member. I sound cynical : a person who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing. I really am not, but I guess just irritated at how history - fake history - can be used against a peoples. Your Markets sound wonderful, and so intriguing. A lot of fun, too.
I understand the concept of Thanksgiving and I know Canada has one too but it is good to be thankful for those but I think that should be everyday not just to celebrate on that one day, if you know what I mean.
Hello from Catherine in Washington, US. Few things touch me as deeply, into my bones, than pipes. Thank you for bringing them to us a world away.
I agree bagpipes are in my eyes the best instrument and I like violin's too. thank you for the comment much appreciated ❤
Oh my goodness. Folks can be such horrid, mean creatures. I, too, had a tough time in school. But now my life is good. You CAN trust people - some of us. The entitled, rude ones don't count so they can drop out, be invisible. Keep your heart up. I can tell you are a good, decent, honest, caring man. So many of us would be pleased and honored to be your friend. From Catherine in Washington State.
Yeah following from the last comment on another video, I have been trying to improve my eye contact on camera also I do find it hard to trust but I know there is some good out there but yes the rude one's are not worth but as I said RUclips has helped me also I try my best to help others and be caring etc. But my past has been hard and not alot has been good in life except my mum mostly but I know I will always try and thank you for your kind words and the comment much appreciated ❤
Please don't take what I said as criticism as I only was responding to you saying your RUclips videos have improved over time. You will master this, I am sure. Your mum must be lovely. Mine was. My issues in school were my extreme shyness, not being short, with blue eyes and what we call BIG hair. I was tall, had very long straight hair by choice, and never wanted to be the cheerleader type. In a word, I was a nerd. My dad was also a vile alcoholic who was financially very successful and who used money to keep me "in line." All dreary, but not who I am today. I guess one could say I found a mold of the type of person I wanted to be, and I eased into that new skin over the years.
@@catherinejohnson8478I understand and thank you for the kind words but thank you for sharing your similar life story and sorry to hear you had similar past also like myself I just find it hard from past but very little good in my life doesn't help but I will get there hopefully
I can't help but see you are in a lovely room with many things here and there you have collected/like. I am seriously crushing on your beautiful heater/fireplace surround and mantle. A warm, lovely room is something special.

Just found your channel. First - as a woman, your mustache/ beard is to swoon over; Second - turn up the video you are showing; Three - look at us ! Just a glimpse is okay, but do look into the camera. You have a lot to say, so say it to us, please. Greetings from Washington State, U.S. And best wishes for success!
Ok thank you for the comment much appreciated also not sure if your referring to me as I am a man both biological and in general, sorry if I misunderstood but again thank you for the comment.
Oh, my dear. I was as a born female of a "certain" age complimenting a gentleman on an outstanding beard/mustache. I have arrived at that point in life when I don't have to be coy or shy - I can say my bit without embarrassment or fear and I have learned what our Dr. Martin Luther King said is true "It is always the right time to do the right thing." For me, it is to never refuse those first generous impulses to give a sincere compliment. So you are stuck with this lady who likes facial hair, and thinks yours is grand. Sort of goes with the keen interest I have in what you show and say.
No worries and thank you for that much appreciated 😊

'Up Helly Aa' is the Viking celebration held on Shetland.
@@Thurgosh_OG Ah I have heard of 'Up Helly Aa' wasn't sure though if it was a Shetland Islands thing but thank you
Samhain 'SAH-win' in Scottish Gaelic. We used Swedes to carve out, in my younger days in the Highlands, as they were bigger than regular Turnips. We used to dress up as creatures or spirits of the night, because the vale between the realms of the Living and the Dead was thinner on Halloween and by dressing like them, those creatures and spirits would think you were one of them and leave you alone. The Irish used to celebrate it like we did in Scotland, as the origins predate the Romans coming to the British Isles and even predate the Celts, though modern lore tries to say it's a Celtic thing.
@@Thurgosh_OG Thank you for the pronunciation and I didn't know you craved too. I always though it was regular Turnips (Neeps). That is how Halloween should be not how alot of people dress up as now and I thought it there was a connection with Romans in a way but I have always thought of Halloween to be Scottish or Celtic but thank you for the interesting comment on the history/lore.
The short clip at 6:00 is Inverness, showing the River Ness, that runs through the town (now city) centre and other than also being in the Highlands and the inverness being The Capital of the Highlands, has nothing to do with Portree.
Thank you for the explanation and information about Inverness and thank you for the comment much appreciated 😊

Inverinate Forest is on the west coast, by the road to Skye, while Inverness is approximately a 70 mile drive north east from there. I enjoyed this, it also brings home how many of our places have awkward pronunciations. Inverinate sounds like Inver init. Al the best from Scotland!
Oh wow, it is close to the Isle of Skye that is cool and yeah I have noticed there are alot of places that are awkward or just hard to pronounce in general but thank you for helping me understand how to say them. Thank you for your comment and I am glad you enjoyed it. All the best to you aswell
A dirty business. They've played out this charade, got what they wanted. Her nose in the jewelry box, after the tampon incident God alone knows where his nose is. Media does try hard, but few will mourn when she goes to live with satan

Selkies The selkie is a mythological being found amongst the folklore of Scotland. Selkies are shapeshifters, transforming between seal and human form by shedding and replacing their skin. In their human form, selkie folk are always referred to as being incredibly attractive. Selkies are said to be part human and part seal, taking the form of the seal for safety in the depths before shedding their skin to walk on two legs on land. Selkies feature in Scottish and Irish folk tales, particularly on the islands and coastal regions.
Oh that is so cool and very interesting, thank you for the explanation and the comment

True
Glasgow - the city no one likes, except Glaswegians, who insist that the people make Glasgow. This is true, no one goes there if they don't live there, and the people are horrible bigots.
Interesting, I always hear that everyone is nice and very polite all over Scotland. Thank you for the comment much appreciated.
Weird that Glasgow has the 2nd highest tourism numbers in Scotland, only beaten by Edinburgh for obvious reasons, with it being the capital & Edinburgh Castle. And there is plenty of vloggers on RUclips from all over the globe showing vids coming to Glasgow. So you're heavy rabbling. The irony of you calling others bigots after posting a bigoted rant, is quite hilarious. Enjoy your wee bitter life Stevie.
You're full of shyte mate, you must have got yer baws kicked in Glasgow for being a d**k and now you're bitter about it.
@@shadowfoxxie He's lying for what ever pathetic reason.
@@garymcatear822 Either way, I generally hear everyone are amazing people etc.
