To answer the title... it does better SMN than ffxiv.
Almost teared up at the end. It hurts to know of the inevitable shutdown that is to come. First ever P2P MMO w/ fond memories...I was 14, now 34, enjoying FFXIV, but sometimes I wish I could back in time.
I played ffxi for way too many years. I also tryed playing ff14... but I didnt like it. why ff14 is even an online game... who knows. every contact with other players showed the state of the game, I only met hatefull scum that blamed you for beeing a new player. square enix should've never wasted a second on developing a game that only attracts the worst human garbage.
Ahhh... Cid and his epic chompers.
I played this game in 2004 and honestly it was beyond amazing! I spent so much time playing this with friends and family. And a few years back I revisited my old character. And the one thing that hit me was how empty the place was. I was walking around the main cities and remembering how busy and hectic it was. Remembering all the friends I made along the way. I played for a few months checking the trust system and although the player base wasn’t what it once was. It still brought that magical feeling I once had. No other game hit like ffxi did. Just to name a few amazing things, Hunting NM’s for hours. Doing CoP missions and let’s not forget the Airship fight! Our link shell failed so many times on that fight haha. But we got there in the end. I remember being a lower level and seeing a PLD in his AF gear and thinking WOW I want that and that’s just a few to name. There would be countless stories I could remember lol. All I can hope for is a remake and maybe just maybe those players that missed the golden age of post level cap 75. Will understand why so many people loved this game. The community is what made this game for me. And to dream that one day a remake could happen. I for sure would replay it all over again. Thanks for your awesome video on this amazing game.
Thank you!
I had attempted to play FFXI as my first MMO, in 2004, but my discs were messed up during the installation process, or the process was corrupted in some way, and I couldn't install the game. It was already going to be hard for me to play cause my mom wasn't sold on paying a monthly subscription for a game I was playing. I ended up playing WOW towards the end of 2005. But I really wanted to play FFXI back in 2004. I remember buying the official strategy guide and studying up on all the classes and jobs and the beginning zones in the base game and first expansion. I believe that was how the game was initially released to the US, the base game and the first expansion. I enjoyed WOW, but I am a life long FF fan, and would have loved to play FFXI at the beginning of its first few years of release.
/sh lvl75 PLD <looking for party>
Great content. Would love more like this. I'm not even a FF11 player; I just respect that you have found something good and special and are sharing it so it isn't lost to obscurity.
I remember in the hay day my friends hated me so much because I would read through each cs and they would just press enter as fast as possible to get through them, but when you would do instanced stuff it would trap them in purgatory while I sat in the cs because it didn't let everyone out of an instance till everyone saw the cs lol.
Played from 2003-2013 before migrating to XIV, and I always describe my time with XI as "The most fun I never want to have again". That said, if I were to have a fated encounter with Truck-kun and get isekai'd, I'd 100% want to land in Vanadiel more than Eorzea. As much as fast-travel is a great quality of life upgrade in most games, there's just something more endearing about a world when you're actually forced to navigate through it to get somewhere. To this day, I could probably still find my way from Kazham to Norg or from Jeuno to Boyahda Tree. Also XI-DNC > XIV-DNC.
I started playing around 2006 when I was 14. The grind was there but with new enemies, music, scenery, and friends at every turn. Racked up days of playtime in high school and stopped regularly playing, but the sub is going strong for 6 months. Would love a reboot, XIV doesn't hit the same. Was Nerevar on Hades, now Ordinator on Asura ✌️ Guess I'll catch up on some things
I never realised Nyzul isle was Alexander 😂
Never knew that the Alzadaal ruins were supposed to be inside of alexander, when was this mentioned? Great video as always!
@@mmmporkribsThank you! It's mentioned throughout the Treasures of Aht Urhgan story. It's explained when the story of Ragnarok is articulated, and also referenced when Razfahd and Ghatsad were able to unbind the Gordeus and reconstruct the new Iron Colossus if I remember correctly. To be fair, they refer to it as Alzadaal's Iron Colossus. In FFXI, Alexander's true form is never really revealed. While I can't quite remember the lore behind it, Alexander (the deity) is stuck in the higher plane, unable to project Avatars to Vana'diel. He can animate the Iron Colossus as his Avatar though, through the Astral Candescence. So the Alzadaal ruins are technically just the remains of a massive body he animated to fight Odin. This animating technique that Alexander uses is what inspired the Puppet Masters of Aht Urhgan to innovate and create automaton puppets btw.

To my recollection, FF9, FF10, and FF11 were all be developed at the same time. For me, FF9 and FF11 feel the most closely related to in the esthetics. Airships between towns is the main thing, even though you get your own later. Everyone also had a particular job class (this goes for 10 a bit as well). Also Dark City Treno and Grand Duchy of Jeuno: when you say both of them it has that same roll of the tongue feel in rhythm, both have AHs (although done differently), both have that more high class feel to it, and both are circular. Also Moogles, kupo. There is no denying you can see how they were made in tandem. Also FFX is not lost on FFXI as you can summon and fight with your Aeon/Avatar.
Thank you for drawing these connections! People usually speak of the series as having a chasm after FFX. While there is certainly a change in direction, without FFXI, the through line is significantly harder to see.
@@vicenarian340 I can for sure see that chasm and how people would say that. Also FFX was down right GORGEOUS for it's time
@@vicenarian340 As FF9 was a love letter to the series, 11 also is in a bigger sense with all its reverences. Job Classes, Bosses, Job Mastery Stars, Summons, the list could go on and on.
There's a huge difference between a good homage and a simple reference. It's easy to make a reference: find something popular and appealing, and point to it. An homage is creating your own thing but with emotional influence from something, and is usually paid tribute to after it's been created. A reference is only interesting if you understand it, but an homage can be interesting for the exact reasons it was worth paying tribute to in the first place. That's something that Final Fantasy XI has always done well, and is one of the reasons why I prefer it over its successor.
This beautifully describes why I prefer the way FFXI handles it's FF legacy over FFXIV. There are instances where FFXIV comes close, but FFXI almost consistently handles these instances very well.
i know this video is 7 months old, but i just wanted to say that i think its well made even if i disagree with the placements. personally in era CoP is mid at best and on retail it is eaisly the weakest box expansion because it has no combat challenge and thats the only thing that made it decent during the early 2000's. As someone who actively plays on both an era server and retail though I have to say greg is objectively incorrect about his statements on private servers. You can not play through the old expansions as they originally were in the 2000's nor play the game how it was back than. which just to be clear i adore both versions of the game, retail has thee best story content in any FF game and amazing battle content. But its not a holistic experince like era was, I can not play with the original leveling speed, the orginal movemet speed, class tuning, or weaponskills as they were on retail. classic XI started at level 1 every level you got mattered because you unlocked new content along the way, there was new content that mattered to the progression of your character constantly. getting a peacock charm, emp hairpin, leaping lizzy boots were all massive upgrades that you carried with pride all the way to 75. Retail the first 98 levels do not matter you can fly through them in an hour with the help of a blue mage, and even if you weren't cheesing escha zitah for easy exp leveling is still 1000% faster than era. during the early 2000's the most exp you could was 200 pre-level 50, after 50 i belive it was 300 without rings where on retail a single kill without rings can easily nab you several thousands of exp. Old battle content was all made easier to adjust for solo play on retail, such as removing the level caps on the CoP zones and than nerfing the bosses. every single weapon skill has been buffed massively. Most WS's stat modifers have been doubled or tripled from where they were in the early 2000's, as well alot of multihit weaponskills now transfer FTP across all hits where back than FTP only effected the first hit, so WS's are considerably stronger on retail than they are in classic. because of these things even if i got 5 friends to play through the old expansions at the intended level from the content it will not and cannot be the same experince you would have had in the early 2000's or on an era accurate private server. this is not a single player game that is realeased and left unchanged for decades, XI has recived constant tweaks and changes to how its played and balanced over the past 2 decades, so I cannot and never will get to play the original CoP or ToAU on retail because the game has changed to much to experince them as they were.
I do acknowledge there are some minor details different between modern retail and classic XI, but if the run speed being slightly faster is a deal-breaker, I think we're just at an impasse with what we value in a video game, and whether or not those differences in values is worth playing a pirated version of the game that actively derails modern retail. And, I will state, if you want to level up slower, just stick with classic zones and don't put on an EXP ring. If you go to modern areas designed to help you level faster...well, obviously you'll level faster. That said, I don't have too much criticism to offer somebody who plays on both private and retail, because playing retail supports the devs, and I respect somebody who decides to support the creators and their artwork. I appreciate your commentary. : )
@gregtroyan i will admit the movespeed comment was nitpicky. Personally if the devs gave us official classic servers I'd probably play on those over a PS cause i love the vibe of 75 era. I started playing in 2021 i think so i don't really have any nostalgia for the preabyassa content, i just like the super slow pace of the old game. But I'll always tell people to try retail cause wings and seekers are goated, easily the best story content square ever made
@@princessrayneshia1293 That's fair. A lot of folks like the slower pacing of the classic game. While modern retail isn't 1 x 1 an exact match of the classic era, playing the game without Trusts, ROE, EXP rings, and limiting your level cap gets you very close to the old school style of play (and there are dudes playing that way on retail right now), enough so where I don't think the trade-off of losing great content like WOTG and Seekers is worth it. I get that a lot of people like the slower pace of the old version of the game, and for them, the game is about grinding and that slow slow grind. XI isn't about story, it's about the grind. For them, the story is what gets in the way of the grind. For me, the grind is what gets in the way of the story. I'm a story first guy, so to me FFXI is about experiencing the story and zones, and so if my option is, "Here's the game with less content and it will take you way longer to go through the content and also it will take away from the livelihoods and budget of the devs" or "Here's the game with a lot more content and the content here is some of the best content in the FF series", I easily take the latter choice. But I acknowledge I'm not an MMO guy, I'm an FF guy, and those are often two different breeds of people.
I miss XI... that was my first MMO
Man, ff11 bahamut looks cooler than ff14 bahamut
I'm a big fan of both designs, but there is something certainly iconic about the FFXI bahamut.
In the Diabols section you mention that people still go after relic weapons despite they are pushing 20 years old and other top notch weapons to get. My view on this is a lot of people played when relic weapons were THE top weapons. At that time you needed to sink millions of gil and get a ton of people to help you farn and kill mobs in dynamis. Now, you can solo everything with trusts and lvl 99 cap. I think people go after relic weapons because they remember when they were a grind and if you had one back in the day you were the shit. I remember a galka player in my server, Cait Sith, named Worldshaker, he had an Aegis. Good times.
That's definitely true. There are still several relevant gameplay reasons to acquire them too. Becomes the PREMA weapons (Prime, Relic, Empyrean, Mythic, Aeonic) usually validate all their respective expansion content, SE has opted to update these weapons rather than updating the content itself. This keeps older content relevant, even if it's easy. As for the Relics, the three that I've seen in conversation the most is Apocalypse, Aegis, and surprisingly Excalibur. There are niche cases for the other Relics, but there are particular Odyssey, Sortie, and Dynamis D strategies people employ with these 3 Relics, so they are still valuable.
@@vicenarian340 If I remember correctly Apocalypse was nerfed twice. What made Aegis so damn good is you could still slap on an Excalibur on your PLD. I had a friend who was working on a relic horn. He loved to play DRk and people would always ask why not go for Apocalypse over horn. He would only say to them /c me. The they would see his k-club on his DRK lol.
THese are great. I love FFXI so much ToT
@@redcloud16 I'm glad you enjoyed it! There are a ton of FF references in FFXI, but I've never seen any videos on them.
@@vicenarian340 hell yeah it's a gold mine, what other kinds of videos are you gonna make
@@redcloud16 I have several scripts mostly done. The one that's closest to completion is probably a summary of all the Final Bosses. The FF union did one for the mainline series and the FFXIV final bosses, but never FFXI. So I may just go ahead and finish that up. I see that you've made some progress on the Art project you mentioned a while back! I'm glad to see that. After reading your comment regarding the sparseness of the story content on the wikis, I coordinated a project to get all the big stories & big lore sections their own write up on the fandom wiki. Thanks for bringing that to my attention!
@@vicenarian340 OMG!! That's amazing!! Thank you!!
FFXI is the most "FF" Final Fantasy even more so outside of its story, because it is an actual true traditional RPG, and takes that further through being a proper MMORPG to boot. The mechanics, gameplay, stat building and customization, hidden walls, secret paths, hidden treasures, random coffers, the list goes on an on, make FFXI the most worthwhile Final Fantasy.
It's become my favorite FF game for these reasons! unfortunately, it's also the most shunned. But I'm happy to see people who understand the game!
Important to note that it's Diabolos, not Diablos.
@@magus13131 Thanks for pointing that out! I actually had a paragraph on the etymology of Diablos vs. Diabolos, lol. I cut it last minute though, it doesn't have too much relevance to the reference.
Your vids inspired me to start playing FFXI, albeit on CatseyeXI but Im really enjoying it so far.
That's great to hear! I know one of the guys who worked on Catseye, and I really appreciate the rationale behind that server. Glad to hear you're enjoying it!
What’s catseye
@@ronnieriosstayshredded7410 It's a private server. It's one I'd recommend too, if you are more interested in some of the gameplay experience over the story. It's probably the best (modernized) way to experience the base game, and first 3 expansions. It doesn't have any of the following expansions though. If you don't mind missing out some of the best story parts of FFXI in favor of the best modernized 75 era experience, that server would probably be your best bet.
I love how self-referential FF series is. It never gets bored to found more and more connections :)
@@morteaux3662 Same here. FFXI is an interesting case. It has a TON of them, but few people know about them.
CoP was known as being hard AF.
Even though I've played much more of XIV, FFXI > FFXIV
@@Jordan3DS I think I have a slight preference for FFXI as well, but it's close. I deeply appreciate both games for very different reasons.
Thank you! as a player that started way back in 2003, and still play to this day. I really appreciate when more fans get to see what a true gem of a game this is.
@@Pokethings-j2o Thank you for watching!
Now if only those cheap bastards would localize dq10 online
15:38 ultimate raids aren't real in ff14 they're in game fan fiction by a bard "juicing up" the fight
They're also just an excuse to have poorly designed muscle memory fights to keep dedicated players subbed for months and months until they can beat them 😂
Kate sith you mean ket chee?
According to VII Rebirth it's Kate Sith (I know you're right but I'll never not find it funny that the localizers made such a glaring mistake like that)
@@at0micl0bster I knew someone would take issue with that pronunciation lol.
These videos never disappoint. 🔥
Thank you for the kind words!
I'm hoping to see an 11-2 one day. It'd be great at exploring currently-unexplored areas.
I hope so too. Admittedly, I'm still foolishly hoping SE gives enough budget for more mini expansions like they did in 2020 for The Voracious Resurgence. One can hope though...
That would be pretty great! XI's world and music have more personality and charm than I've ever seen in any MMO, the only game that comes close is WOW.
I would rather see new expansions. Modernizing XI would ruin it.
I don't think you want modern SE touching this lol. They only know how to fumble FF nowadays
@@alanlee67 Well, how about in a later future, such as where Square has gotten out of its fumbling phase?
FF11 is a Final Fantasy MMO, FF14 is a MMO with a Final Fantasy name.
Pretty braindead take to be honest. I put thousands of hours into both, they're just different. 14 has some of the best stories and moments in the franchise, but I guess it's easier to just be hater and miss your glory days?
@SPB___ who's hating? FF11 felt more like an actual final fantasy game, 14 feels like a casual MMO. Do you have nothing better to do than try and be a smart a** in a comment feed?
@@SPB___I agree, FF14 still very much has the qualities of a Final Fantasy game. They're both amazing games and I don't get why people can't enjoy both without bashing one or the other.
you justifying the lack of information for the quests and comparing having to search a guide online to being somewhat the same as quest markers is just cope. and i hate it when people do this,. when people are incapable of pointing out the flaws of the game.
There is a reason my thumbnails say 'retrospective' and my titles say 'review'. This series is meant to be halfway between a critique and an overview. I do have serious issues with certain aspects of this game, but the majority of these issues have been part of the public discourse since 2003, and they've been thoroughly covered by many others. So rather than rehashing the same issues, I wanted to point out why some consider this to be one of the best games series despite it's numerous flaws.
you couldn't enjoy the story of ffxi back when it was released. the stupidly long grinds between lvls would make it so that you would not remember what was going on in the previous mission. on top of gathering a group that was on the same mission or past it to clear it.
I've been very vocal about my inability to enjoy classic FFXI and private servers. But FFXI is a very different game now and has been for over a decade.
Anyone got a FFXI discord I can join?
BLU was easily the best job in the game for me back in the day. I started out as a RDM to 75 then worked on BLU. I wish they’d incorporate more of XI into XIV’s content. Here’s to hoping the new raid series has a great story!
100% facts, i do like the fact that they now have Trust to fight with you cause even fighting a "easy prey" was a pain in the ass solo, or simple changes like giving us a key item to open Banishing gates solo, field guide pages to complete for exp, leveling was a feat in it's self back in the day, spamming (looking for party) for hours, taking 20min to get everyone to the location, fighting with other parties for pulls to keep chain exp rolling, but when you had a great partying that was rolling thru mobs no one wanted to leave and you made friends, I'm currently back playing for my third time and I'm loving it, think the community has only gotten better over the years cause a lot of us are older now and we played it on release, any newer players are ff fans so it's a good crowd in general, not like wow where the people only get worse, min max'ing, weird gate keeping, fill out a job app to join my guild what a hell hole lol, this is like fine whine it only gets better with time, And Maat is still living rent free in my head, you old sob how many times i had you down to a 1 shot on my rdm then you smash me for a full bar of hp ( ^_>^) / ~~~~~ I---------I " (*<_* )" /angry
What private servers have that retail doesn't have is the blanket hardship. That is what Abyssea took away from us. Those of us that played 20 years ago had everything we worked for, taken from us. The time we spent in game was made obsolete overnight, but that's not the real loss. The real loss was the communal hardship we endured together. Once you open the door to what you call "quality of life changes," nobody will choose to play old school, and so the climate changed forever.
Except there are tons of people choosing to play old school, tho, even on retail.
@@gregtroyan Only one of us has played both. I can say that with confidence because it's clear you don't know what you're talking about. Not just to me, but to all the players from NA launch that still play on the private servers. We're talking about 2 different games unfortunately.
@@riverwulf6721 Nah, it's literally the same game with added features. The culture just changed. You're wanting a different culture in the game. Mechanically, all of the OG options are still in retail.
@@gregtroyan Correct, the culture changed. Which means the game changed. If it no longer takes you an hour to walk from one point to another, you no longer have the social interactions that you may have had before. If you can solo most encounters, you no longer have the social interaction you once had. Even though you can still undertake these endeavors mechanically, if everyone is not forced to do it, the social interactions can no longer take place and will no longer take place. It is fundamentally a completely different game, even though it looks the same to a current player.
@@riverwulf6721 That's not part of the game. That's part of the culture.
really like the deconstruction of the sins
they should took off the monthly sub fee and let us enjoy the game cuz i wont pay for 24 years old ass game
They had actually mentioned ending the sub for the game and making it free when they stop making content for it. As slow as it is, the content is still coming though. If you want to play the game for free, just use the 30 day free period to hit max level. Then do an expansion during every free log-in campaign. They have one every couple months. It's a slow way of getting through it, but it wouldn't require a sub.
@@vicenarian340 I really hope so , u made my day by that , because paying for it and ffxiv 14 and bills and my family is too much
It always comes back to FFXI 😌😌😌
Thank you very much for this tour of what I once experienced so long ago and what I never got to see!
@@ByrnEtch I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's always nice to hear a vet's perspective on these videos.
@@vicenarian340 What was experienced back then is wholly different to what I've now witnessed in it's predcessor FFXIV, ah those parties to level up throughout Valkurm Dunes and so on, for me there was something about that form of community and unwritten ettiquette to ensuring the members got their sufficient levels and time respected. Late night farming with Dynamis, to the exploration of the magnificent world itself. Al'Taieu will forever stay with me (That music, my goodness.) - It felt like a rite of passage to unlocking the end game zones, Sky, Sea. As you've shown: I could revist this game quite easily, but I find cherishing the memory I had is enough.
This expansion was unfortunately where I stopped. Personally I enjoyed many moments in this expansion, but I had to move on as the story didn't conclude in time for me, as you opened up with in the beginning of this video. I thank you for this primer into what followed and where we left.
Party do u need it! Love this game I can’t wait to get again I was thinking should I just go back to 14 again but I really want to play 11 again especially since I still have my old account vergill and lanthier caitsith Odin server miss the music and the maws with the crazy alliance level up party’s fun wish I was young again
Opening up with such a wild take about mmos is wild
is this online or offline games?
It's an online MMO. But, you can play through this expansion as is it were an offline game without grouping up with other players.
