    Hi Iain, thanks for this very useful video. For you, what would count as a small ensemble vs large? I'm looking to record a group of 10-15 singers (4 parts). Thank you.

    • @bigiainsmusictechnologycha7704
      @bigiainsmusictechnologycha7704 29 дней назад

      Hi - sorry just saw this! Yup thats a small ensemble in my book. For me, small ensembles are quartets up to maybe 20 or so, then you're into mid sized and finally full orchestras and even orchestras with choirs as very large ensembles.

    No diss on your vid or PT here but Logic's system of doing this is so much better! No need to click anything to do a new take, nothing disappears, and the last take is stacked at the top which is usually the best take. The comps also auto crossfade between each other. It's so much faster than this. I've been using the Logic system on professional voice work for years now. PS it's still not perfect in Logic but I think it's better than PT's system.

      NGL, I'm a logic guy of decades experience. Its always been my goto for creative work, while PT is my goto for audio recording work. Fair to say I probably love Logic more than tools! (don't tell anyone!!)

    • @bigiainsmusictechnologycha7704
      @bigiainsmusictechnologycha7704 10 месяцев назад

      Check the open playlists view. When you create a playlist, it moves the previous take down the playlists and crates an empty space on the track for your new take. This is shown and explained at about 1:55. You need to change from WAVEFORM view to PLAYLIST view to see your list of playlists.

    • @Reginaldborington

      @@bigiainsmusictechnologycha7704 I think the problem is you verbally said "backspace" but the character you show on screen is a backslash, pressing backspace does apparently delete the audio. Whilst for me, pressing ctrl+backslash does absolutely nothing and now I'm probably 3 or 4 inconsistencies and frustation points away from cancelling my subscription to this and going back to Adobe Audition. If feels very much too elitist and not for beginners. edit - I'm absolutely baffled and losing the will to live with this, I just looked in the shortcuts and New Playlist is START+#, in what world can it be that different in my software. Whatever reason it has for ending up that different, this is how software loses people.

    Beat Detective rules! I must have looked at a zillion videos trying to find out how to quantize my drum tracks from Cakewalk to Pro Tools. They just would not line up right with the rest of the instrument tracks when importing the OMF file from Cakewalk. I couldn't find anything. I tried warping the beats in a track but nothing would quite line up right. Then I found your video and bingo there is joy again in my DAW world. I am migrating from years of Cakewalk to Pro Tools. Thanks so much you helped me out of a major dilemma.

    I don't like the sound of XY on guitar personally. The engineer at NAXOS uses A B 1.5m out and slightly above the guitar itself. He also selected from a range of mics depending on the sound of the player and their classical guitar.

    Thanks very much! That's a fantastic video with some very important concepts explained so well! I've got a question that I'm hoping you or someone here might answer :) I'm recording a small orchestra (minus strings section) and I'm hoping to use a pair of Rode M5 in either the XY or ORTF position. My question is do I record with Pan set to the Center for both Mics (on the mixer/recorder), or do I need to pan each mic left/right? Any help is much appreciated :)

    • @bigiainsmusictechnologycha7704
      @bigiainsmusictechnologycha7704 Год назад

      Well it really doesn't matter to be honest. However, all stereo mic setups are assuming stereo monitoring and reproduction, so not panning them hard left and right kinda misses the point! Back in the day if you were using a mixing desk to send your mic signals to your recording device, then YES it would matter big time as you would remove all stereo imaging by NOT panning. Assuming you're using a 2 channel interface into a laptop running a DAW, you'll be golden.

    You didnt mention anything about interchannel level difference and interchannel time difference - inportant topic which makes these techniques more undestandable. And if you are talking about audio, your sound quality should be nice, but it is really hard to to listen - its quiet and your voice is unnaturally bassy and causes resonance

    Closeup placement is from the old days when microphones and recording equipment had much less signal to noise ratio. Now the microphones and equipment are much better, so when old techniques are used it sounds so unreal with exaggerated details you can not hear in a live performance. It's like looking at paintings with a magnifying glass.

      Sorry, I don't know. I haven't had a look at Intro yet! However, as this is a relatively advanced function, I kinda doubt it unfortunately. I expect the group editing function may be in Intro, but I'd only expect a massively watered down version of beat detective, if it exists at all. Please, if anyone knows, letb us know here. IN the meantime, I'll get hold of intro and work out where I can instal it (I can't have ultimate and Intro on the same machine! I think they're working on that) and see if beat detective or a version of it is possible.

    great video , please , could you tell me which is the best position to record Grand coda Piano ? thank you so much

    • @bigiainsmusictechnologycha7704
      @bigiainsmusictechnologycha7704 2 года назад

      Any of these techniques will work for a grand piano as they are mostly distance miking techniques. You have to remember with any of these techniques that they are designed to as naturally as possible pick up a live performance in an acoustically acceptable space. These are not for "close" miking whereby the engineer tries to eliminate room sound and get as close as possible (popo music recording of an acoustic piano for example). Personally, I would try the XY near coincident technique first and experiment with expanding that to the NOS and the ORTF techniques deciding which you like the sound of best. Having said that, for a single instrument like a piano in a nice acoustic, you may not hear a massive difference between these techniques - differences will be subtle. Simple rule - move the mics further away and you will pick up more of the "room" sound. Closer in and you will get a more positive sound from the piano. Experiment with the distance.

    A proper “matched pair” have their response measured by the manufacturer to be consistently similar. ALSO worth mentioning is use of the MS technique allows for adjusting the amount of stereo width in post and the MS technique is very mono compatible.

    Thank you, but how do you maintain phase?

    • @bigiainsmusictechnologycha7704
      @bigiainsmusictechnologycha7704 2 года назад

      If you notice when you have all your tracks selected to do the group edit, the cuts in the clips happen at the same point - this is down to sample accurate, so there should be no issue with phase. If you chose to use beat detective on the Kick drum AND THEN use it again on the snare, and then the toms and so on, you would potentially get horendous phase issues. The trick is to edit the whole kit simultaneously rather than one track at a time. My video on Groups is also handy for this.

    I wish I watched this last week. Had a first 6 piece session on Monday where there was a need for a tempo change and I ended up using the pencil tool to make the adjustment from 134 to 168 or so! We decided that we wouldn't make the manual change for the second change down back to the 134 so they just ignored the 168 beat click in shifting their performance down to the 134. I am going to play around to see if I can post recording put the tempo change in. I am doing pick ups over the weekend so I can get a fresh recording of the ending with the tempo change in place for the band. There is so much going on with this program.
