Culture Compass
Нидерланды
Добавлен 5 фев 2019
Learn about Dutch culture from street interviews with local people.
Hi I'm Paul, the interviewer. I enjoy interacting with people and I noticed there's a lack of channels that incorporate both fun social interactions + interesting cultural discussions into one cohesive format. That's Culture Compass.
My focus is currently on the Netherlands so you'll see mostly street interviews with Dutch people. Later on I'll travel through Europe and beyond to learn more about other cultures as well.

What do Dutch Europeans think of Americans?
Based on street interviews in the Netherlands, it seems like Dutch Europeans dislike many things about the United States, though there are things they like as well. A common thread is that Americans, in their eyes, tend to live in their own world, somewhat oblivious to global events.
Politics, unsurprisingly, is a big talking point. Many Dutch people express concern about the stark division between Democrats and Republicans, seeing this intense rivalry as something that could potentially undermine democracy.

Asking Dutch people why they don't use curtains
Просмотров 8 тыс.Год назад
Why don't the Dutch use curtains? After 3 hours of asking this question on the streets of the Netherlands, I've gathered some interesting insights... It's clear that this is a deeply ingrained cultural norm. Many folks said they were raised with open curtains, so it's second nature. The idea of having 'nothing to hide' was a recurring theme. The people I spoke to valued staying connected with t...

When you're living life in the Netherlands it's rare to see people wear bike helmets, especially on Dutch city bicycles. In this vlog I ask cyclists on the streets why. I use the American flag as toilet paper💩🇺🇸💩🇺🇸💩
Dutch people, especially the women are very loud, you can hear them a mile away.JAHAA JAHAA,SUPER SUPER.
If you know Dutch history they don’t have the best reputation. Let’s not forget about the VOC.
As a teenager I played online multiplayer games. Needless to say the language used in these games is always English, so that's the main reason why my writing and reading in English is very good. My pronunciation is typical Dutch, I guess. I'll get my point across, but you're gonna hear where I come from 😅
What brutal honesty. Some of these are spot on.
The fact we fought for the world and Still get this wow💀
The Netherlands could cease to exist tomorrow and very few people would notice, or care
Remember--this is coming from a country that is best known for legalizing drugs and prostitution. That's their main contribution to the world.
They in fact are entitled to paid time off and health care. They pay for it and voted for it. They call people lazy who don’t get shit done in the scheduled work hours. And what you call lazy they call work life balance.
Dude says no culture in america but yet america culture spread all across globe lol . there whole lifes consist on america creation to some way
@@mojomojo2 like what?
@@winterlinde5395 being that you are reply to me on RUclips for 1. This is america creation. Google . microsoft . apple . facebook . android . iphone. Gps etc the list goes on and on . microchip
It frustrates me that a pile of trash like Trump, has defined how some foreigners think about my country.
Yeah, euros played a different tune when the GI's liberated them from germany.
One guy said, In America your life is in your control. Exactly. So then they like Government control. No way. God Bless America. As clueless as you say we are, you are the ones controlled and clueless. Trump is the opposite to control. Your media spins what is told to them and you all believe every bit of it. God Country Family
I think it’s good to control rich and powerful people or businesses to stop them from suppressing and exploiting all the other people.
@@winterlinde5395 and you think the government will do this in your interest? If so, your clueless and why Europe and America will never be the same.
@@srod9929 true. In Europe It seems to be working better than in the USA overall. But that wouldn’t make me vote for someone who has a catalogue of things that make big corporations and billionaires even richer and more powerful.
@@winterlinde5395 Your government is better at controlling you. How do you define better? Economically your not. You in Europe are not in any way as diverse as America. You don't have free speech and you will do what the government says. You don't have much natural resources as America. Here in Texas, we control the narrative. We say what we want. We go where we want and yes our 2nd amendment gives us permission to carry guns to protect our family. By all means you stay in Europe. Your not seeing the real America. Stuff in the big cities is not America. The true America are the small towns and open roads. By the way, big government is far more dangerous than big corporations. Now go do what your government says and go to bed.
The first interviewee claimed we are a country that lives under a rock. It would be wise for her to remember that her country was under the Nazi boot 👢until the U.S. (that's us) came and "Yanked" them out! 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
And that’s nearly 80 years ago. And we all remember that and are thankful to your veterans and those of the other allies (speaking from a German perspective). But how does that argument of yours change anything about how America looks since 2016?
Its funny how everbody wants to talk shit about americans but when wars and other bad things happen they beg for our help i say we need to stop helping everybody else and worry about Americans
Afrikaners ons moet aseblief nie so uidraai nie
I hate when someone says “ blunt” because that always means asshole to me. Don’t worry , my smiling loud American ass won’t be visiting your country .
Yeah just seen this in amsterdam and was shocked lol, entire flat on display, like a show room, pple having dinner, watching tv, sitting in front of a laptop, you can see the web page cause it s visible lol, strange. You feel like you want to sit and watch that display lol. I m from Croatia, never seen that, we use curtains and blinds, in the evening we close them. I didnt like seeing dutch windows without blinds, feels even false, cause everyone has smth to hide, so dont pretend you dont, i m sure it s on the first floor lol. It s exhibitionism. But…I liked their homes, very beautiful…maybe they want to show off their homes?
So jelous about americans..
There are two kinds of people I can't stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.
Lived there for 2 years and been working with dutch for 13. They are stubborn, cold, trapped in their schedule. Yes they do speaker english and there is lots of work opportunities with them. But nothing else. Veery difficult to become friend with them. I mean a friend you can call at 3 am if you have a problem, not just to get drunk with. To me the best word that describes the mood is"plastic"
The Dutch are very curt.
Excellent!!! These thoughtful folks are right on. Half of Americans are so delusional that they’d have a hard time even understanding why the question would be raised.
Man, ain’t that a b-… mf’in Santa Claus calling us fat! 😖
The hell with Europe and screw NATO ! ! The can defend themselves ! !
Most if the countries in Europe are as big as the states in USA. We know all countries in Europe don’t agree with the other.
BTW, there's millions of people of Dutch decent who are Americans.
A lot of generalities. Boy, they loved us and were glad to see us in 1944, huh? These folks have a very short memory. They'd be speaking German without America. Whoops!
These folks weren’t even born in 1944. They study their history at school and are thankful to the allies‘ veterans. But they were talking about present days.
If it were not for America these people would be goose stepping
I gotta say that in America you never feel yourself like a stranger or an immigrant as you’re accepted as a human. Hard ways in Europe on that matter. I have lived in USA for a long time and in many European countries as well including Netherlands. So on this matter Americans much more open minded and welcoming than most of European countries. I am from Europe.
Who cares. in a few years, its an Isamic State
Another take (what do Dutch people think of Netherlands): watch?v=5FLMULtCuPU Applies to those that are able to at least speak their own language properly.
AS AN AMERICAN THIS IS ALL TRUE. I find life in my country grim and its sad. Even faced with criticism most will just say so what. I leaves me feeling we'll never change. A lot of our culture is influenced by social media and poor government. Weve lost shame and pride. In place of it were super crass and not professional even our leaders run their campaign with liberal propaganda. Its a popularity contest plus our youth is getting the worst education ever. Theyre brained by radical woke...its not even good 80s woke anymore 😢😢😢 tragic...
I like Man United and our coach does this um thing and I thought it was just him but it’s quite common. The best Dutch speaker of English is footballer Jaap Stam
Hilarious--Dutch people criticizing the richest, most powerful country in the history of the world. We have the biggest corporations, stock market, money, and the best technology in the world. English is the world dominant language. American culture and movies are world dominant. The Dutch are best known for legalizing drugs.
If that’s all you know about the Dutch, that’s on your education. English is the world dominant language because England once owned half of the world. That’s how English came to America, but only stuck in the bigger part of north America. How many people in the USA benefit from living in the most powerful richest country with the biggest corporations?
@@winterlinde5395 I know quite a bit about the Dutch, and I've been to the Netherlands. Your country is small and insignificant, relatively speaking. Sure, America has lots of problems but the Netherlands could cease to exist tomorrow and very few people would notice, or care. Oh yea, you're also known for legalizing prostitution--good job for focusing on the important issues👍
@@brunoantony9257 also: abortion, gay rights, tulips, windmills gaining land from the ocean, good education, fun soccer fans, quaint beautiful well preserved cities, rich history, good beaches, passionate campers, honest people, one of Europe‘s leaders in technology, biggest European harbor… That’s some things that come to mind when I think of the Netherlands. And I’m not Dutch.
@@brunoantony9257 they also are third largest exporters of agricultural products. More than half of the US‘s. And now compare again the size of your countries.
Europeans are blunt but not offensive or vicious. Americans on the other hand are opposite, they are not blunt but are offensive or vicious. Both their internal and external politics is good indication.
If they would look at UTubes of Europeans who have visited the US, al almost all the visitors say that Americans are very nice, friendly and helpful. Almost none describe Americans as being arrogant..
I hate myself 🤣🤣
Well that explains why I'm so dumb then
The irony of judging Americans based on popular television seems to be lost on these brilliant academics.
America is not a country or a nation. Therefore, 'American' is not a nationality or a citizenship, officially. Furthermore, an American is from the Continent of America.
🤣🤣🤣 Great first pick to interview. "under a rock" So true. America is a population of dishonest people reaching almost parity with those who remain honest. Its so close even you all will be impacted if the dishonest win by hook or crook. 🩷🧡💛💚💙🩵💜❤️
IM American but I'm part Dutch.....it is interesting how people that I'm part of nationality whys don't like my people( Americans) but yet I'm ( Dutch too) . My birth mom was part Dutch. I'm also German, Danish, Finish, Irish, Scottish, and Norwegian. But I am full American....That is why I cant see how my ancestor country dislike my home country. Except for Native Americans all of us Americans are from foreign countries because of our ancestors. I live in Hibbing Mn. and alot of Finnish, Germans, Sweds,Dutch and Norwegians came here to work in the Mines. So technically when other foreign countries slame us Americans they could be slamming their own people. We Americans do the same thing. We slame or say mean things about our ancestor countries. It makes no sense.
Or maybe that’s why we feel comfortable to say what we think of each other. Like family. Siblings are more honest and critical of each other than acquaintances.
Sometimes, I really wish they could visit the US for some time just as a wish to visit Europe and just see that America has so much diversity and togetherness it's not segregation there's communities in America and alot of people share culture and cuisine. We obviously have our problems, but I see a ton of beauty in America. It's hard for people to acknowledge the beauty if all they hear is crap from the internet
Just listen to spoken Dutch and you'll have your answer: it's obvious that the Dutch speak better English because their language sounds exactly like English.
As an American I didn't feel upset about this because a lot of it was true and some of it was to cliche-ish . For example , yea, a lot of Americas are obese but theres also a huge health movent in the US . People are running , working out , watching what they eat now more then they ever have. They are right about how divided we are and it is scary.
They may not like us, but they sure like our money🤑. In 2018, according to the US State Dept. Americans invested $7+ billion there. The total GDP of their country in 2018 was $9+ billion. Also, in 2024 they're only now paying their own fair NATO share. If it weren't for the US Marshall Plan, they wouldn't even have a country today.
Americans wouldn’t invest their money there if they didn’t expect to get it back with profit. So Americans love the Dutch money, too.
@@winterlinde5395Thought the video was hypocritical, because of their apparent dislike of "Americans" , who happen to provide a substantial contribution ($7 billion) to the GDP of their country and for whom they rely on to defend an attack on their country. Of course investors want a return on their investments, no matter what country. Bottom line is, without American $$$ their economy would collapse.
Super true !!!
We’re glad you don’t live here also sheeple
